Europa Corporation

History: Europa is run by a corporation. The Corp was established in 2201, making it one of the youngest charters in the Colonies. It is the fourth attempt to make a go of the planet. The fact that the Europan surface is a shell of ice over a liquid ocean made it difficult for the first colonial forays. The high tectonic activity that occures whenever anoth Galilean sworld makes conjunction wreaked havoc on early structures. After the third attempt (2170) ended in the loss of over 2000 lives, the moon was abandoned. The Europan Corporation is the first to make a success out of the world. With their invention of the insu-shock foundation, the crust is capable of being built upon. Europan architecture is composed of thousands of separate "habitat-pods" each about twenty meters across (pictured below). These are linked by a huge web of flexible tubes, leading to main thoroughfares. Any habitat pod can be instantly isolated from any other in the event of an emergency. As an added bonus, the pods are easily transportable, allowing a person to get up and move if he doesn't like his neighbors. As can be imagined, this makes it very difficult to make an accurate "streetmap."
The corporation itself is rather benign, not being as inhuman as some others. Since the colony was founded relatively recently, they do not have a high earthgov refugee population. Although they do not have nearly as many prejudices against the descendents of the survivors of earth, they have a reputaion as being elitist and racist because of this.
The head of the government is the CEO, and each branch is called a department and so on. Society is stratified between management and employees, or roughly stockholders and non-stockholders. These "Stockers" and "Nonstocks" are the haves and have-nots of the colony. They are typified by many of the differences between white- and blue-collar workers throughout history.
The business of the corporation is food production, chiefly fish. As the solar systems largest depository of liquid water, they have the capability to create huge hatcheries. To date, they have had little success, and the corp is getting worried. According to Colonial Charter, they have 25 years in which to accomplish their goal, and they have yet to turn a profit. They have just embarked on a major culmination of their efforts, a vast hatchery, filling the limits of an extinct volcanic caldera. They are stocking it with a variety of genetically-enhanced fish and plants (bought from the gene-banks of the Luna Zoo), guided by robotic tenders. It is a make-or-break proposition for the colony, and there are many whose lives, reputations and livelihoods depend on the project's success. There are also those who would like to see it fail, since they would then be able to bid on the Europa Charter.
