Move on to On the Waterfront

Lots of invisible posts right now, check carefully before you reply to a thread

The old thread was getting crowded. With a group this size, I'll probably have to start new ones pretty often.
As Beka indicated, the time has come for the cart to move out. Sitting on the buckboard, she gives a command to the oxen and they begin to shuffle forward.
Anyone with TF: Carts and wagons can tell that she is totally inexperienced with directing a team. Those of you without this TF can only tell that the Oxen seem to be a bit clumsy
The wagon eventually leaves the circle by the western avenue, directly towards where the Saber River enters the harbor, not the northern avenue which passes by Merchant Hall. Brassman is continuing to tag along.
It is still dark; dawn is probably several hours off. The way is softly lit by lumina lamps.

Cas jumps up onto the back of the cart and looks around. After a bit she turns to Beka, "Okay there is a problem. You have all of the weight near one side putting all the work on one ox. Of course it won't matter much because those ox don't look like they could walk a straight line they way their rigged up."

Cas looks around at the various people in the group, eyes skipping over the male barbarian and falling instead on Celeste, "Celeste, Do you want to help me move some of their gear around so they have proper weight distribution?"

"Riccoco, do you have any experience with oxen as leads?" Cas doesn't look his direction but just speaks. "If so could you please redo those oxen so they walk a straight line from time to time. It will help a great deal."

Riccoco stands there for a few moments, his slanted eyes blinking. He shrugs a little tossing his trident and leather bag onto the cart. Muttering under his breath, "Vixens, foxes, and barbarians. What a night!" he trundles up before the oxen and begins to futiley move straps around and being generally ineffectual.

Unless, that is, Ricco can figure out what the problem is and fix it -without- the TF and just his base INT.

"Did you say you were a guide? We are going to the Promethian docks to find someone to take us to Adala but I can offer the job to you if you're up to it. What are your qualifications?"
To the vixen
"My guards are inexperienced and we couldn't get it loaded properly. I would accept you help if you're willing. We need to get down the road a little way first though. I don't think we will be attacked by barbarians but more guards are welcome."

None of the people you have asked to stay is a qualified guide. You may be able to find the road to Adala, but you will need someone qualified in tracking and cart handling. There are dangerous beasts to contend with and the road is anything but paved.
These people are not acting like the ones that Daddy hires. They give in to your demands pretty easily. It occurs to you that a different approach may be necessary.

Cas, you seem to have struck a nerve with the young woman. She definitely seems to be upper class from her bearing. Certainly her clothes, though adventurous, seem to be of fine make. Now she turns to Beka and approachs slowly, "Do not mistake my haste as taking over this job lady. You see this city is quite volitile right now and with that fellow over there dealing with it the way he was," Cas quickly addressed Nuyok, "No offense I hope. I shall teach you methods later if you wish."

Cas turns back to Beka provided she is paying attention, "That brass guy wasn't going to leave until satisfied. I would LIKE to at least get everyone's names before it became clear to that walking hindge that we didn't know each other."

Rolling her eyes, trying to be apologetic, "You have need for an extra guard. I am a guard. You have need for a hand to assure that you make it to where you are going. I can provide you that hand. You also offer a journey from this city which gives me the chance to stretch for a change. While I would never turn down a cut, you offer what I need and I offer what you need. I think that is only fair."

Cas extends her paw open. It looks very, um, beastial shaped with very sharp looking claws.

Riccoco, something that has been nagging the back of your mind since the Night People tunnels suddenly becomes clear. That dobe' (and there was only one in the tunnel, the other was apparently human) could smell you down a passage through which you hadn't been. He smelled you from about 200 feet away of twisting tunnel. His sense of smell must have been incredibly acute. It iccurs to you that now that he has your scent. He could pick you up anywhere in the city and possibly beyond. He definitely had murderous intent and there are apparently more than one of him.
More motivation will become apparent very soon. We're not sunk yet. : )

Brassman made an observation about your boots and is probably suspicious about your lack of response. Besides watching you, he is also scanning the street very carefully.
Since Beka stated they were going to Adala, you would guess your ultimate destination is the Promethean Docks to get passage either on a ship or to take the ferry to the trailhead trading post.

Now that we're underway, I'll see about starting up some casual conversation with the Brassman to try to ease his concerns/suspicions (e.g., if there's something wet I could've stepped in along the way, mention it indirectly, as in "While undertaking my duties earlier, I was hurrying past Nobleman X's stables, which were being washed out so the street was overflowing with no way to get around, really has made for a long night of minor inconveniences", i.e., something that takes a trivial deduction to figure out) and perhaps craft a reason why he needs to be somewhere else (e.g., doesn't he have a post to maintain watch over, joints to lube, perhaps something about underworld activities for him to go check out, etc.?). Nuyok will take a bit of time in preparation for this to help out his chances (whatever's appropriate with the anticipated travel times involved).

Brassman's appearance is identical to the link in the previous thread with the exception that he bears a long sword, which is currently sheathed at his waist. He stands just under six feet in height. His stature and manner give off an almost Falstaffian air. He was at the front gate when you first entered aTallon. Beyond that fact, you don't know much about him. His movements are too different from a human's for you to judge his speed or reflexes. He is armed, though his picture is not.
As for what he would find interesting or suspicious were you to tell him, there's only one way to find out.

Cas is a bit annoyed at the brassman treating the group like a child so she decides to do something about it and despite her fox nature she does something absolutely painful... she is honest.

Cas moves away from the oxen as they are now better secured and approaches the brass man, "Excuse me sir but my name is Cassandra and while I can fully understand you wanting to follow us after an excuse like that, I think it is ill met."

She doesn't give him a chance to respond, "You see I have no desire in the world but to leave this city and hopefully not return until I have been to another, dumped a huge load and returned with a new trade. Recognizing that my kind and their nature to decieve I am serious when I say that I will be gone with this caravan before the sun has risen."

She breathes and smiles but continues on interrupting him even if he tries to speak, "I would just hate to waste your time. And not long ago, in fact just before I walked over here I saw the most unusual thing. There was a man who was talking to either himself or a shadow over yonder. I know not the full subject of the matter, it sounded like it had to do with the murder the guards were asking about earlier."

Continuing even still... "Now I can fully understand if you would want to escort us out of the city after a pathetic excuse like that, but I think you would have more success solving this crime seeking out the killer."

Cas bows and hopes that she isn't grabbed by the collar, "Either way it will matter not to me for I will be out of this city shortly. The killer, however, is another matter all together."

.oO( I must scrub my mouth firmly with raw hide after speaking truth like that. )

Your story provokes a greater reaction than you would have guessed. Without bothering to whisper, the manikin replies, "Murder? Killin'? Speak up old girl. I've heard of no murdering being done tonight. If you know something, best be out with it, wot?
"Brassman the Bold stands ready to defend the city against hooligans and blackguards, but I'll need more than the casual word of a stranger, vixen or no, to go on. What's all this about a murder, then? And what the deuce does it have to do with some old bloke talkin' to himself? What did the blighter say? Speak up."

His hand is on the hilt of his sword, and his pose is striking (and perhaps a trifle silly).

Keeping a straight face would require an ego roll. It doesn't matter, though. You made it in either case.

Brassman has listened to Cas' story. He glances across the rooftops upwards to Talon Circle, where the heights of the Merchant Hall may be just barely seen against the night sky. He glances at the group around the wagon.
"Well good woman, that may be so. Thanks for the tip. At any rate, you don't seem to be going much of anywhere tonight at this rate. Best of luck to you all, stiff lips and all that rot! I think I'll toddle of to see what's the buzz up at the Circle.
"But first, I think I'll see what those fellows who've been spying upon us might be after. Wait if you will or go on to the ferry. If need be, I'll catch up to you there. Toodle pip an' that rubbish, wot?"
Brassman walks back the way you have just come towards a pair of previously unnoticed beast dogs. They were hanging well back in the shadows. They have wide curved swords drawn. As Brassman approaches (this is several blocks away), they react as if stung and turn tail. This seems to satisfy the metal man who immediately gives chase. You cannot clearly hear what he is shouting, but it's probably a command to halt. He is producing a police whistle somehow.
At the same time as this occurs, a small wagon drawn by a beaten down horse comes from the direction of Tallon Circle. A young man is at the reins and beside the wagon walks a portly fox. "Faliol my kit!" he cries by way of greeting.

I will post some more direct responses later. The baby is crying : )

I run at full speed to the portly fox and skid to a stop just before him. "Jareek! Am I ever glad to see you!" I lower my voice to a whisper and say, "You had me very worried, you old rascal."

"Riccoco, Celeste, and Cas, come meet my sire!"

"This is my sire, Jareek. Jareek, may I present my new friends, Riccoco, Celeste, and Cassandra?"

Riccoco watches Brassman with wide-eyed surprise as he flushes out two dog beasts. Faliol shout actuallyl makes the old 'coon jump and he hustles distractedly over to the newcomer.

.oO(Ol' Riccoco be floatin' for the long haul if those be the Dobe's pack. Adala lookin' like the greener grass, now.)

Offers a hesitant bow to Jareek before mumbling a quick apology, "Riccoco be forgettin' his things in that wagon over there. He be needin' to square things away with Merchant Hamilton's caravan if he be headin' to Adala with the rest of ya."

In a few long legged strides, Celeste has caught up with Faliol. Some tension has left her upon hearing Faliol call her 'friend'
.oO(I have 'friends')

Still keeping an eye on the caravan cart as it moves off, after introductions, she reminds Faliol..."Faliol, we'd best be going to the docks, perhaps your father can travel with us to the docks?"

With my tail whipping around like it has a mind of its own, I listen to Celeste, "Oh, yeah. You are correct. Pops, are the two of you and this wagon going to Adala via the docks? If so, can we come along? Celeste and Cas can be guards. Riccoco could help me with the scouting. He went to get his pack off that wagon full of humans. I will tell you about that later..."

Confused, I shrug and look at Jareek, "Hmmm, I guess Cassandra and Celeste got hired by the humans. Nice people, I wish them well. Still don't know about Riccoco's plans. With all the crazy stuff going on this night, it is kind of hard to keep track of everything."

With a slap on Jareek's back, "So, Pops, where are you headed with this wagon?"

The greying fox looks kindly at Faliol. "Faliol, me dear boy. Stones, and I've been looking for you all over town. I just accepted a job for us with this estimable young human merchant."
At this point the young man driving the cart speaks up. "Oh, I'm not a merchant yet. I'm merely a trader, Trader Kent. I deal in herbs and roots, as well as the odd art piece. I heard a tip about a month ago that Dreamleaf is going for a fortune in Adala. It's been cheap here for several months since some farmer up the Saber decided to try actually cultivating it. The Master Farmer himself took a hand and now the market here is glutted. I've put everything I had into this shipment, cart, and horse. Oh, as well as hiring the best guide east of Mingatok." Here he indicates Jareek.
Jareek replies with a quick aside to Faliol, "The lad talks like a lightning bolt, don't he?" Then aloud, "I reckon we were going to try and join up with a larger caravan. For protection in numbers, don't ye know? Did I hear aright that some of ye was on yer way to Adala? If'n you wouldn't be opposed to some expert guidance and tracking, I'd be right happy to walk the road with ye."

Jareek is a wonderful old man, kind and well-menaing. But he's no guide. Not like you or your mentor. He'd get killed out there on his own. This is his roundabout way of asking you for help without admitting any shortcomings.
If you've ever seen Crocodile Dundee II, you can see the approach I've taken to this situation.

.oO(Dreamleaf is going for a high profit in Adala?! Riccoco need to be lettin' things die down around here anyway.)

Riccoco grabs up his trident and pack from Beka's wagon. he speaks loud enough for both carts to hear, "Ifin' Riccoco be hearin' right, we all be headin' to the same place. Adala is as good a place as any for this ol' 'coon. Riccoco be offerin' his services for fair wages." He breaks into a knowing, toothy grin, "As Faliol said, I can act as Scout."

.oO(I might as well turn a profit on the trip as scout. I'll just have to follow the young fox around. Then, I can get a hunk of change for my own dreamleaf. The perfect plan Riccoco you old fox!)

.oO(Must be delicate, get a job while not shaming Jareek..)

I remove my cap and execute a formal bow. My back is beginning to hurt from all this bowing. "Pleased to meet you, Trader Kent. I am Jareek's foster son, Faliol." Replacing the cap, "Yonder wagon does indeed go to Adala. Unfortunately, as you can see, the lady trader has hired very many people. I am afraid she is also in a foul mood, at the moment. I do not think she will take kindly to your offer to join her caravan. You would probably be viewed as just one more headache among many others."

Indicating Jareek, "You have hired an excellent fox as guide but have you considered the ramifications of having only ONE guide? Guiding a caravan is tiresome, draining work. If one guide is always in the bush, seeking your enemies, when does he rest? And what happens if your guide becomes exhausted while searching for enemies? Next thing you know, Rat hooligans are crawling up the sides of your cart with their pointy teeth and reeking breath!"

I shudder to add emphasis.

"Now if you were to hire - me - as another guide, you would make better time and keep Jareek rested and fresh when you need his talents to be at their peak. Also, if you approach the lady trader with two guides in your service, she should see the worth of allowing you to join with her caravan. I know all your money is tied up in your merchandise and cart. I will work for a fair market share of the profits. If you don't make any profits, you don't pay me anything."

"What do you say?"

Not much extra to see from spirit sight here, but a good look shows that the bags on the back of the horsecart are filled with the same plant material that can be found in Ricocco's pack, among other things. You must not be familiar with it, since you cannot identify it exactly. There are small pieces of crystal in small padded wooden boxes as well.
As for the dogs, they didn't set off your Detect Hostile Intent, so either they are not after you or you just failed to notice.

Nuyok takes note of the unknown plant material, and will try to discern what it might be from the context of the cart, the cart driver, etc., but not actively do anything to investigate it further, i.e., no need to appear suspicious. Could it be some sort of contraband?

Does Nuyok notice the reaction of Riccoco in response to the beastmen run off?

You assume that Nuyok, being an adept, can see inside the tightly wrapped packages on Kent's cart. All you can see is that they are wrapped to protect against the rain, same as most of the silks on your wagon. Kent has identified it as dreamleaf (defined in the next thread), so if you have not already heard Ricocco say what he is carrying, you know now.

Climbing out of his nook in the wagon where most had not noticed me till I spoke, I get in to the driving seat and start the jerk at the oxen getting them to move slowly with the other's help, till I spot a side street.

Anyone watching can see I have no knowledge of animals and but barely get them to trun. They come to a stop in the road at the opening of the side street.

" Well if anyone can help get this thing going again, we can get to the Promethean docks much quicker this way."

I point down the side street.
