Please proceed to Predator Attack

The cart and wagon have been loaded. Everyone has had a chance to purchase last minute necessities. The party begins down the main gravel road that leads through the farmlands and out toward the picket. The picket itself is a line of great tree trunks, sharpened at the top, about fifteen feet high. There is a gatehouse, which is manned by a group of about ten soldiers. After a brief inquiry as to who you are and where you are going, you are passed without a second look. Please let me know if anyone tries to pass a false name. Keep in mind, you are asked openly, so anyone in the party will be able to hear a false name.

After the gatehouse, you pass across a small bridge that spans a deep ditch adjacent to the picket. The road here is still in good condition and can rightly be called a road. It is still the middle of the morning as the trail bends and the post is lost to sight. At the moment, the road is following the inlet. The foliage is still so thick that you can rarely see the water. Although the sun is out and there were no clouds in the sky, the light is a bit dim due to the deep canopy. The shade provides no relief from the heat, though. The sun may be unable to beat upon you, but the humidity is so great that most of the foliage is actually wet. Vagrant keeps his rags about him, but you can hear labored breathing from his hood. Anyone wearing an oilcloak will be at -5 to any Con roll that is required.

After several hours you cross another bridge. This one is made out of huge tree trunks, felled and secured across a rather swift stream and ravine. The trunks have been roughly plained and then packed with clay. Moss grows upon them and jungle vines hang from the edges. There is no rail, so the cart and wagon cross carefully. On the far side of the bridge, the road has ceased any pretence at repair and maintenance and merely has the appearance of a very wide game trail. Those among you with AK: Caravan routes can inform the others that you have left civilization behind. Every three months, an entire brigade travels the distance from here to Fort Lizard, cutting slashing and burning. If they did it any less frequently, the jungle would swallow it up.

Once or twice, you hear the snuffling of some great creature in the depths of the trees, but you encounter nothing but mundane flora and fauna.

Seeing as how your entire bunch skipped the previous night of sleep, Faliol (who is often ahead) calls a halt at the top of a wide flat hill just beyond the noon hour. It is mostly uncovered granite and there is actually a slight breeze. This would be a good place to take an hour of rest and to eat.

You may set up a quick camp, if you desire, find a place to snooze or just sit under a tree and talk. Anyone who has been this route before (Faliol, Beka and Cas) will know that setting at least two guards is vital.

Tormented Chicken and Hunting Plans

Cas has been tormenting the chickens in her cage now for the entire length of the journey thus far.

If at any point someone has asked her to stop, she would have stated she would when they take over driving.

Now that the wagon is stopped she opens the latch to the door and reaches in, grabbing a chicken from the cage. Once the door is resecured, she hopes over the side holding the chicken firmly. For the next four of five minutes she is stripping the feathers from the chicken.

It is important to note that this chicken is still very much alive. She gets very aggrivated and hostile at anyone who tries to stop this action from taking place.

Once the chicken is stripped she bites it firmly on the neck, killing it. She then goes on with eating the entire chicken to the bones.

After the eating ritual is complete Cas seeks out Faliol, "We will need at least one more for the hunting party when we make final camp. Perhaps Kent knows enough about hunting to fit as our third? An all fox hunting party would be very fitting and nostalgic."

Cas also is inspecting local plants to see if there is anything that makes good seasoning or can fetch a price in Adala.

Did you mean to say "Jareek" instead of "Kent"? Kent is not a fox.

Also, making camp would be likely done near the end of daylight (maybe a little earlier today since you have all gotten little sleep.) If you are planning a hunting party, do you wish to do so with the last daylight or the first daylight? You estimate an average of three hours to find decent game. Could be more, could be less.

As for your chicken bothering, Jareek and Kent look on with obvious discomfort. Neither will say anything about it, since you are hired on as driver for Beka's Wagon, and not as Kent's employee.

Celeste looks over to where Cas is involved with the chicken.....the noises it makes while being plucked are somewhat unsettling, but having seen and heard much worse......and remembering from her childhood, a similar incident involving a dog and a chicken she does not interfere, especially with the look on Cas' face. However, the cessation of it's tormented squawking is a welcome return to the quiet of the forest.

I find Jareek and take him off to one side of the caravan. Turning my back to the caravan to hide my backpack, I pull out the child's rattling toy and the pieces of red yarn.

"Pops, since you are the lead guide, you need to explain this system to the others. The guide in front will walk a serpentine path making sure that no ambush or large carnivore is in the path of the caravan. Every 50 feet, the guide will leave one piece of red yarn as a marker that all is well up to that point. Twist it a couple of times on a clearly visible branch. This rattle will be held by the secondary guide that is within sight of the caravan. The secondary guide also collects the red yarn for reuse. If the caravan stops, this rattle will be used to alert the forward guide. To keep him from getting too far ahead of the halted caravan."

Pulling the special arrows out of his quiver, "If the forward guide spots an ambush or dangerous animal, he will fire this arrow with the black mark towards the caravan. It means 'Immediate Danger.' Don't hit anyone with it! Just place the shot in the path ahead of the secondary scout. The yellow marked arrow means 'Stop and Wait' and the white marked arrow means 'Proceed slowly'.

"To review - black means 'Immediate Danger', yellow means 'Stop and Wait', white means 'Proceed Slowly'. Any questions?"

Motioning towards the shady area behind the wagon, Faliol sits down, leaving plenty of shade for Jareek and Riccoco.

"Beka and you seem to have reached an understanding? I am glad to have you along. This is a strange caravan. Have you noticed that the pinkies are friendlier than normal?"

Moving off into the shadow and settling down with the two foxes, Riccoco pulls a few items from his backpack, rations, supplanted by some nuts and berries, and his drinkskin. During the repast, seemingly uncomfortable, Riccoco finally broaches the subject of the lunch request.

"My friends... Riccoco be a little worried about our companions. A stranger crew this 'coon hasn't seen. Cas, the vixen, is a good enough sort with a flapping tongue and a knack for the twist. This coon not be saying he's been in a scam or two, so, the vixen not be a worry to Riccoco. The Scarred Woman, Celeste, not be a bad trickle either. She be barbarian and straight enough. Merchant Beka is hardnosed and in too big a hurry, Riccoco be thinkin' she runnin' from somethin'. The runnin' not be worryin' this 'coon. It be the chaser goin' to make it hard to sleep at night."

Here Riccoco takes a drink of his ale and offers it to his two companions, forestalling their comments with a paw, "The ragwearer be fearful in what he's hidin' not what he's showin'. The same be said for the big pinkie, he be a help in a pinch. Handle is quiet. Ol' Ricco is to old to be trustin' quiet. Now... Nuyok, the Mindmage. Riccoco be thinkin' this is the fellow the guards be lookin' for on the dock a night or two ago."

Shrugging, Ricco takes another drink of the ale. "Nothin' much there, but, gettin' it out in the open be the right thing to do. You two be watchin' yourselves and be ready. Always." Clearing his throat, the 'coon continues. "Now... Riccoco got a story of his own. Trouble in the tunnels of the Night Folk. A Dobie workin' for someone bigger be tryin' to give Riccoco his last breath!"

The next pause is long enough for interjections and questions.

Good rolls!
All of these pertain to Cas, by the way. Cas has been by far the center of attention since the carvan left the Trading Post, thanks to her chicken-torturing.

PS: Caravan Guide tells you that Cas has had exerience living or working a caravan.

AK: Caravan routes of Merikia Tells you that she has rarely if ever taken this route. Her desire to find and correct maps is a dead giveaway. There are no maps of this route. Also, she has shown ignorance of several key landscape features to avoid (drop-offs and cataracts that a guide would know about, she doesn't seem to realize are coming.) Nevertheless, she is quite crafty and has concealed this fact from everyone else.

Lastly and most importantly, The chicken thing should be bothering you. Not because of any cruelty involved [it's a Savage Earth]), but because your Survival andAK skills combine to tell you, that going through monster-infested territory is a lousy place to make a chicken scream. For hours.)
OOC: I would have assumed Beka would have put a stop to this, but Susan has been out of town this weekend too. Perhaps she was distracted by a bigger problem.
As for the chicken, after Cas has finished her repast, the silence that now hangs over the party allows you to hear...

Most people have settled down for a bit of a siesta. In this hush, without the creaking of wagon wheels or the cries of the chicken, you hear the low cough of a predator. You are unsure exactly what you are hearing, bu it is coming from behind the party, perhaps trailing them.
You believe it may be a Jackalo, a canine animal with spiky fur and prodigious leaping abiliy.
It may also be merely wolves.
Of course it could always be a chimera of unknown nature.

Or it could be a pack of any of these. The sound is not repeated.

I tune out Jareek. My ears rotate towards the back of the caravan. Something dangerous just coughed...

Standing, I take my bow in my left hand and nock an arrow with my right.

Loud enough to be heard by all but not shouting, "We have at least one predator behind us, maybe more. Don't jump about or move around in obvious haste but it would be a good idea if our guards took their positions."

Walking slowly towards the back of the caravan, I add, "Stay with the caravan. Don't get suckered into charging off into the jungle alone. Together we are strong, alone we are something's lunch..."

Rest for the weary....

Celeste waits for Beka's response to the question of who will guard first. If others are to stand watch, Celeste looks around until she finds a likely tree with a leaning trunk. Laying the blanket against it, she leans against the tree and catches what little sleep she can, having had none since the previous morning. Celeste will not eat until camp is made for the night.

OOC Rath, not ignoring you (on purpose)

This was directed at Faliol and Cas, correct? Little confused because of how you responded (to Nuyok). Not sure when this statement was uttered. Since Cas has a distrust of barbarians, I left the choice to her. She selected Celeste as first pick, probably since we have a little more history together. If Celeste says no thanks, I will again suggest you.

OOC: Actually I think I was talking to Beka (who was deciding on watches), I did put that in a weird place, and meant to put a narative in the begining, but I guess with all my reworking I deleted it and never put it back in there : )

Response to Handle at the Trading Post

Celeste turns to Handle to respond to his query....She is not sure of him, but answers his question as best she can without revealing too much. "Pit fighter?......No, I am not familiar with 'pit fighter', though Rath did mention it in passing.....my scars are my......they tell of my skill at my.....trade. Amongst my folk, they are.....a rite of passage. No one is allowed upon the ships, unless they bear the scars, (at this she points to the scarring on her face). Each success adds to the patterns. One's life storey may be told by the patterns....(she now indicates the patterns on her arm and leg)...If you cry out while the 'rite' is in progress, you are not worthy to sail the Red Tide. It is not for the weak of heart to be Red Tide.

"But you, Handle, that is such a strange name, you have no kin? No family? You also are not from around here? Where have you traveled from?"

"Eh, what? Uh, no I was born in Talon, don't know who birthed me though, was left in the streets and prey much raised me-self."

I stop looking a the surface and check out the shape of the body in general
OOC: what does celeste look like?
then look Celeste in the eye, (so far the first person I have looked square in the face), "If your people do this to themsleves then I hope to ne'er meet 'em. All my own scars I would'ave not had if, I had the choice."

OOC: Handle, looking at Celeste, you see an attractive woman approximately 6 feet tall, well proportioned, muscular, with slightly asian features, Her complexion is of medium tone, lighter than Beka, but darker than Rath. Facial features are marked by patterned scarring across the general eye/cheek area. There are other scar patterns where indicated....arm and leg(s) If you look closer, you will see that some of the designs are comprised of older and newer scarring. As if a simple pattern was added to over time. The scars are generally lighter than her general skin tone. They are not crudely done, but rather intricate and fine in the execution....similar to fine tattoo work in detail. Her hair is nearly black, but in the sun, has highlight enough to show that it is in fact very dark brown....she wears it very long and braided away from her face (french braid style) bound at the bottom with multi-colored cording which is interwoven in a pattern similar to that on the hilt of the falchion she carries. Clad in typical "Savage Earth" style, somewhat revealing, though not as revealing as Beka's, nor as fine. Comfortable, serviceable boots, assorted knives, the falchion in it's scabbard and something wrapped around the scabbard, though it may be difficult to tell just what.

Looking Handle back in the eyes, Celeste looks back in the direction of Tallon. Returning her attention to Handle "No child would ever be left to fend for themselves in the streets of my 'camp." (and that is all she will say on that matter) "It is not likely to meet my people. They belong to the realm of the sea and rarely travel further than the inner parts of the Shattered Isles."

As soon as a stop is called, I take my things (still trolled up and tied in my oiled cloak ) and using them as a backrest lay against them on the ground under the wagon and go to sleep.

I try to lay in such a way to be hard to notice easily, behind the wheels in the shadows.

Vagrant sits himself under a nearby tree to rest. Sitting down he grunts out in discomfort. He removes some oddities from his rags and then seems to now rest comfortably. Vagrant seems to fall asleep snacking on some trail rations. An unnatural wheezing can be heard from his hood.

Vagrant is horribly scarred. Large sections of his body are twisted into knots of scar tissue. He is probably not riven, but there is definitely something very strange about his spirit--all three aspects--which you cannot decipher. Without an intensive examination, you doubt you could tell more.
He carries a large number of small varied objects whose nature you cannot decipher.

Cas approaches Celeste after the party has been camped for a little while, "Faliol and I will be hunting at sunrise after we have set camp for the night. He advised that we get ourself someone, meaty, to assist with the hunt in case we run into something hunting us. I would like to give you the opportunity to earn a bit more trust if you are interested."

Celeste smiles at Cas' choice of words, .oO(Meaty? I wonder what else they call us?)

"I should be glad to join you in the hunt, providing Beka does not have me at guarding in the morning. You know that I have no experience in that area, though I believe I am able to defend you against most anything diesel size or under. I also am skilled at fishing (survival - marine surface), though it may be I will need to learn a new way for land fish."

Celeste will check with Beka for hunting/guarding duties, and give Cas her answer. Moving over to where Beka is standing. "Beka, Cas has suggested a hunting party for the early morning...have you settled on the watch for guarding?"
Cripes! The boss is coming!
