With the air between them somewhat cleared, the party breaks camp at morning light. Nothing was seen or heard throughout the hot and humid night. The injured ox is looking a little better, but still needs to be spared from difficult work. As long as the way remains relatively level, there should be no problem.
The way is not simple however. At many points, the cart and wagon must be stopped while all available attack the vegetation with machetes, knives or whatever they might be carrying. No trace of spine dogs is seen. The morning is hot, sweaty grueling work. By the time non rolls around, everyone is hot, tired and covered with sap.
Fortunately, Faliol reports finding a small stream where all can wash. Once cleaned and refreshed, a hasty lunch is had and all continue on. The afternoon is somewhat easier and much more progress is made.
At nightfall, watches are conducted as agreed upon. There is no time for hunting today, since there was too much lost time to make up for. Nothing is heard during the night save jungle sounds.
In the morning, Faliol discovers fresh tracks of some huge creature that has recently crashed through the forest. The feet are large and seven clawed. No other sign of it is seen. Good progress is made throughout the day and the small caravan quickly makes its way through the maze of trees.
Slightly before noon, you come to a wide river. The Lizard Road takes you to a rather shallow spot, but it is strewn with boulders and the crossing is slow and difficult. It takes over an hour to safely make it to the far shore.
A few hours before sundown, the dim light of the dense jungle goes quite dark very quickly. This is followed by a hissing sound coming from the canopy above. Then The Rain comes. It is no namby-pamby shower, however. This is a full Merikian rain. It falls in torrents and cascades, instantly drenching everything. Those of you with any survival skill whatsoever can have gotten out your rain gear by now. No roll is needed. Visibility is down to several feet and there doesn't seem to be any sign of it letting up. People must shout to be heard. The only light comes from covered lanterns (Beka has two, Riccoco has one, and Kent has one.) and Nuyok's crystal.
It is at this point that you encounter The Tree.
The tree was once a mighty giant of the jungle, towering above the canopy. At some point recently, due to lightning or mudslides it has fallen. It lies across your path, a monster roadblock 6 feet high with a snarl of limbs around it. There does not seem to be any easy way around it and to cut through it with Beka's saws will take days. The river you crossed with such great difficulty is surely a rushing flood by now. There may be a way around, but it will require backtracking and trailblazing, something no one is looking forward to.
Those of you familiar with the road reckon that there is less than a day standing between you and Fort Lizard.

[Edited to correct the number of lanterns]

I check the tree to see that it has indeed fallen and not been "cut" to trap us.

If the answer is that it has fallen naturally, I do the following.

"I need someone, Rath or Celeste will do nicely, to follow me as I scout for another path." I take the rope out of my back pack and tie it around my waist. "Whoever goes will be my anchor. Stay back from the river at ALL times. If we both go in, we both die."

I wait for whoever volunteers first.

If I perceive that the tree has been cut, I do the following.

Make my way to Nuyok, "Tree was chopped. We are about to be ambushed." Draw my sword and pretend that I am trimming the bushes back while looking for attackers.

Assuming there is no sense of ambush (rolls below), Nuyok (under his waterproof cloak) will yell over the storm to see if anyone can tell which way it fell, and if so, if you can tell by its size which was would be the shorter route around it, and goes back to huddling under his cloak.

With the visibility as it is, it would take about fifteen minutes for Faliol to scramble to one end of the tree (there is a tangle of lesser trees and branches; it's not a "clean fall" like a logger would leave), and whoever went would have to carry a lantern.
BTW, the River is about an hour back, you don't have to worry about it from where you are, it just makes turning aound and going back problematical.
Nuyok, your spirit sense shows you that the tree is not dead. Being a city boy, you don't know how long it takes for a felled tree to die. It could be minutes or weeks for a tree this size.
Regardless, there is no one thinking of attacking you at the moment.

Other notes:

The bundles of silk are extremely well wrapped. They are unlikely to suffer damage, but a quick and careful visual inspection might be in order. Likewise for the Dreamleaf. The Dreamleaf is much more impervious to water damage, but prolonged exposure could cause mold to grow.

The animals are relatively placid at this point. They are used to being stuck outdoors. This is also true for Riccoco and Celeste and to some degree Rath, who are far more outdoorsy than most of the others, including the foxes.

The ground at this point is fairly matted with vegetation, so traction is not too bad. There are points that will quickly turn to grab-your-feet mud, though.

"Good idea, Celeste, we can use the ropes to keep from getting lost! I have a 25 foot length of rope, but that is not enough. With the sun hidden, I will have a harder time knowing which way we are heading."

Heading over to Jareek, "Pops, use that noisemaker every now and then to let us know the caravan's location."

Anyone have some rope we can borrow for a little while?"

Faliol, secured by ropes to Celeste, you begin the examination of the length of the tree. The way is tangled and difficult. No matter how good any raingear you have, you are soaked to the marrow by the time you reach the end. The roots lie uphill. It looks as though rains had weakened and undercut the base to the point where a lightning strike or perhaps a (very) powerful animal shattered the base. There are no signs of saw cuts anywhere.
The crown of the tree would require machetes to reach.

OOC: Please report on this to the other players quickly if you want to deliver the news in character. Otherwise I will edit visibility tso the others aren't left standing in the dark. So to speak.

Earlier, Faliol spotted tracks of a large animal. He wants to make a tracking roll with a +1 level to identify the track. Not sure which skill is appropriate. Here are some different rolls.

Tracking 12+1, 13 or less.

3d6: 8 Sun November 3, 2002 @8:46 AM (CST)

If he needs to climb, 12+1=13 or less
3d6: 7 Sun November 3, 2002 @8:46 AM (CST)

Question, if such a large animal knocked over the tree (supposition) would it not make a big enough path through the jungle for the wagon? While scouting the crown, Faliol will keep an eye out for the path of the large animal.

Large Animal

From what you can see, it is possible that a large animal caused the fall, but the rain has obscured any possible tracks and it is pretty dark. The foliage is pretty thick around the root end, so it was not a trampling beast. It is also possible that a lightning strike caused the fall. There is splintered wood at the base but you can't tell if any of it was burned under these conditions. It does NOT look cut or chewed; the fall seems pretty natural. If this was an attempt at an ambush, they would have to be pretty talented lumberjcaks to get the tree to fall across the path.

As for the track you spotted this morning. The claw was seven-toed and somewhat bird-like. It would not be a trampler and was certainly large enough to do a lot of damage. Large enough to topple a tree nine feet wide at its base, you don't know. You do know that the track was spotted nearly ten hours ago and far from this spot.
You have never seen such a track before and probably marked it down as a chimera.

Looking at Rath, "Yes, I think the ropes are necessary. Especially when Celeste and I move away from the tree and the caravan to find an easier route for the wagon to traverse."

I begin moving towards the end with the roots. "Celeste, thanks for coming with me!"

Within moments, the water finds its way past my oil cloak. I hate being wet... My tail is matted and will need much brushing...

Moving on all fours uphill, the trip takes much longer than I expected. I pause every now and then to make sure the rope isn't tangled on the vegetation.

Finally reaching the base of the tree, I survey the damage. I follow the rope back down hill towards Celeste, careful not to slip on the treacherous mud.

With Celeste in tow, I approach Beka. "It appears that the rains weakened the roots and either a very large animal or a lightning strike shattered the base. No sign of saws or chopping. The crown of the tree will require machetes to reach. However, the crown lies downhill. Going uphill in this storm will be VERY difficult. I think Celeste and I should scout out the crown. That looks like the route we will take unless we find something ominous."

I move off towards the crown of the tree, still attached by rope to Celeste.

Now, it was pretty dark and rainy, but the foliage was pretty thick around the root end. The track we saw this morning, about 9 to 10 hours ago, was 7-clawed and somewhat bird-like. Maybe a chimera since I haven't seen its like in the past. But certainly not a trampler. Whether it could knock over this big a tree, is a mystery. The important thing is that this looks like a tree having fallen naturally, not an ambush."

The saws that Beka was able to buy are designed to take care of trees 1-2' in diameter. This tree is at least six feet across and the wood is tough and spongey. Although you are making progress cutting away the branches and smaller trees that this one took down when it fell, the main trunk is distressingly difficult to manage. You quickly realize that this will take days, and pickaxes might be better tools.

BTW, the saws you have are of the bucksaw variety, a frame designed to pull a thin blade back and forth across the wood. One person would have difficulty operating it, though Rath could conceivably do it solo with a little practice.

Don't worry about the failed rolls, this is a no-brainer. The best way to remove it is with big two-man saws, some beasts of burden and stout chains. Fire might work if it wasn't so green and (now) soaking wet. Beka has some shorter saws, two oxen, but no chains.
As for the woodcarving quality, it's a soft wood, good for treenware or green wood type carving, so you could easily make a bowl or spoon out of it, but it's probably not the best wood for detailed, polished and finished work.

OOC: I don't know how much woodworking you've done in real life, but "treenware" is not high quality. It is rustic and utilitarian. It can crack easily and is impossible to joint for any long-lasting quality. You have passed infinitely better wood for the type of carving that Cas likes to do. The jungle is full of it.
Also, the type of food dishes you could make from treenware would be lucky to fetch a few pennies. It would take quite a story

As an aside, something your character would know, the very best wood comes from Orodon, far to the north and east of here. It is actually outside the jungle, but the woodcraft of Orodon is the best in Merikia. since your history and write-up indicates a greater familiarity wih the Uzon road and Karkul, it is possible you have been as far as Orodon and studied there. You would have had to put up with a much less enlightened attitude towards beasts than you have experienced in Tallon.See the map for more info.

There's a problem here. I am assuming you are trying to remain hidden, so you wouldn't carry a lantern. Without a lantern you can't see much. Actually a lantern would increase your visibility from 5' to about 10'. So the short answer is that you can't see much of anything. On the other side of the tree, there is the vague shadowiy impression of more jungle.
BTW, you were able to compensate, but the tree was difficult to climb. The limbs and lesser trees form a snarl near the trunk.

To the others, this also makes it difficult to follow the trunk. It's not like you can keep one hand on it and walk to the end. It's too tangled to easily follow. The rope looks like a good idea.

Yes you do hear the coughing. Beyond that, you hear something else. Once, when you were younger, you saw an animal, a caribou perhaps, stuck in a mud pit. With great effort, the 500 lb creature wrenched itself free of the grasping mire with a low, slurping, sucking "Pfloop!"

You hear "Pfloop!" from somewhere of to the right of the trail.

I am no healer, but I know you are not well, and your cough seems to be getting worse. This rain is going to last well into tomorrow or beyond and you cannot continue without some assistance. "

Before Vagrant can respond, Celeste whirls around to face the jungle on the right side of the trail. Her battle trained reflexed have the falchion drawn from its scabbard and ready before the turn is complete. She appears to be listening for something, "Shhh, we may have company...or dinner."

Celeste will approach the other side of the trail and listen.

Once I have gotten their attention and conveyed the message to Rath/Cas, I turn and help Celeste look.

Even your own voices are muffled, and other party members are mere sillhouettes. The foxes all look alike and Beka is hard to tell from Celeste. Those holding lanterns can be identified clearly.
After a few minutes pass, still no sound is heard.

In response to an invisible question:
As you are facing your direction of travel, The roots lie uphill and to the right, the crown downhill to the left.

Roots-Right, Leaves-Left.

You are travelling south. The river you crossed is to the north.
The tree points east, toward the inlet, which is not visible from this spot. (there are hills in between.)

The Fort is estimated to be a day south of this spot.

The clearing in which you are standing is still about knee-deep in undergrowth in most spots.

You currently have is set to Spirit Sense and DHI.

Spirit Sense:
Things are beginning to whip around in the jungle due to the rain. Nevertheless, it feels as if there is more motion (anima) than there should be. It is vague and pervasive though. Nothing you can pin down to a specific location.

DHI:
You have a very ephemeral feeling. Again, nothing specific, nothing you can locate, and nothing like you've ever felt before...

Sorry.
However, since the rolls were so good, I'll toss you a few scraps : )

Riccoco and Celeste have indicated different directions.

You'll never get through this tree in less than a day or two. The wood is too tough and there's too much of it.

You hear nothing, but you are pretty sure something about the surrounding landscape looks different than it did a moment ago. There's just no good visibility to be certain.

The foliage on either side of the path* is too thick to get through without a machete, probably moving at 1" per turn.

*The path is little more than a less overgrown area, wide enough for the carts, but not much else.

Since Celeste dropped the rope, I wrap it around my waist. I move to where Kent can see me and say, "Got a bad feeling, boss. Do me a favor and please turn the cart around. It might also be a good idea to put a little space between the cart and the wagon. If something big comes through those trees, you will have a chance to get out of the way if you face back down the trail. With the tree blocking our forward movement, you won't be able to back up fast enough..."

.oO(Not sure if Beka can back the wagon up fast enough, but at least she will have some room if Kent turns around...)

Stepping up to Beka's position, "I asked Kent to turn his cart around and face back down the trail. There is a possibility that something really big might lumber through the trees. We may have little warning."

With that said, I watch the trees where Riccoco indicated the sound was coming from.

"Ah, you speak of the dreaded Chickaleech!! Let me tell you about our last encounter with them. Jareek might know this young kit named Boreal that USED to travel the road to Adala. One night after supper, he huddles between two trees for a nice safe place to sleep. Soon after his eyes are closed, he is awakened by the trees moving! Boreal sits up, looks left then right. Sure enough, the tree on the right twitches. Boreal's eyes follow the tree up to this area of blackness, darker even than the night sky."

I pause for dramatic effect. I dare not look at the transfixed raccoon. Part of me feels guilty for playing on his fears. But I am a fox, mischief is our raw meat of life.

"Yes, he has made camp under a Chickaleech! But that isn't the worst part! Normally a chickaleech will just suck all the blood out of your body. But THIS chickaleech was busy becoming a mama! To Boreal's amazement, an egg the size of Rath's chest drops out of the night sky and bursts on his head! Must have been thirty little chickaleech babies in that egg, for they covered Boreal from head to toe!"

I wave my arms back and forth to simulate panicked fox behavior. "Boreal runs around the camp, crazy with fear and loathing as the little chickaleech babies get their first taste of fox blood. This does not go unnoticed by the guards on duty, for they shot two arrows into what they think is an attacking leech man. Boreal drops to his knees, pierced by arrows fired by his friends. But the horror isn't over yet. With a cry of rage, Mama Chickaleech stomps down on Boreal with pure maternal fury, enraged that he had broken her egg. So ends the story of Boreal and his fatal meeting with the dreaded mama chickaleech."

I keep a stoic expression on my face as I cut my eyes over to see Riccoco's expression.

OOC: It's not scouting if everyone goes! LOL

OOC Faliol, Cas, Rath, AND Riccoco can't all go! That would be a sortie, not a scouting mission! And that is just those that have had a chance to respond!

My opinion - since we are in a time of war (maybe), shouldn't Nuyok decide who guards and who scouts?

(Tis good NOT to be the leader, hahahaha)

OOC: Haha!! The scout (or two if necessary) should be the best stealth & perception combination (and expendable : ) J/K! )

"In order to be stealthy, no more than 2 should go together. If there is only one source of sound, then 1-2 should go, but if people hear more than one, only one should be investigated, else everyone could get taken down while separate investigating, as it could be either a group of attackers or a single one with skills at deception (i.e., divide and conquer)."

Cas quickly adds in, "It should be Faliol and I. We by our very nature are good at stealth and have experience with working together with the same species. Though I wouldn't mind Rath we need someone big back at the carts to stop anything that might suddenly come rushing out. Riccoco is good but Faliol is clearly a good scout and I have experience with Chimeras."

OOC: I have no BS roll nor Persuasion roll and until I do, my words are always manipulative truths. Make of this speach what you will.

Celeste glances between Nuyok and Beka...No one seems willing to take charge of the company....three members are about to go off into the mists, Nuyok and indicated something is coming, but he hasn't indicated where it is coming from, the direction Celeste heard sound or the direction Ricocco heard sound.

.oO(Gods of the Deep! I have never seen such undisciplined confusion!)

Celeste waits for Beka or Nuyok to make a decision about who goes and who stays.....Celeste will stay as she was hired to guard.

Perception Roll 12-
3d6: 4, 6, 1 (STUN: 11, BODY: 3) Wed November 6, 2002 @1:12 AM (PST)

Celeste is trying to determine just what is going on...is anyone listening to what Nuyok said? Why isn't Beka taking charge, after all this is her expedition. To her way of thinking (military outlook) this kind of disorganization in the face of danger, will most likely cost someone his or her life. She is thinking very hard at Nuyok and Beka "Do something, before they all disappear into the mists!!""

Cas is already GONE. As far as she is concerned, leadership issues can be figured out later.

Celeste shouts over the noise of the storm "Faliol!, Cas! Take the ropes to guide you back! If you don't find anything in five minutes, get back here!Rath! You should stay here, the undergrowth is too thick for you to get through easily. Cas and Faliol are small and can get through areas where you and I would be unable to pass! Beka needs you here!" Celeste looks to Beka for her agreement on this.

Riccoco barks out a bit of nervous laughter from Faliol and Cas's stories. "That be a bit of a far fetch... Riccoco was serious about the Chickenleech. He saw some remains down Beaverton way."

As a few different members sound off plans to go investigating, Ricco, uncharacteristically speaks up, "This 'coon won't be the one ta blame for this nonsense! he won' be comin' to look either!"

Glancing back towards the wagon, his voice harsh over the sound of rain, "Someone better be makin' a decision about a scoutin'. Riccoco be all ears for that!"

OOC: I am on the fallen tre trunk just above where it is blocking the road. I may be hidden in the branches there but I just shouted and your life sense would pick me up anyway.
Cripes! The boss is coming!
