Please post your activity for the following day.
It will continue to rain, but not as heavily and in the afternoon, there will even be brief periods of sunlight. Your spot is defensible, but only so long as people are there to defend it.

Faliol has indicated that he wishes to scout for another path.
Riccoco is trying to convince him to let him go with.
Cas has indicated that she would like to seek more herbs in the daylight.

Among the wounded:
Nuyok would feel better staying off his foot as much as possible for the net day.
Rath is in not-so-great shape and requires low activity
Celeste is the same
Beka is pretty good and can act normally.

Vagrant and Handle are OK.

Please post your intentions and I will post the day's results.

"I think 2 people should scout for a new path. I'm not sure we can take time to look for herbs. Woundwart would be great but it is very difficult to find. Cas, Faliol and Ricocco, please figure out which 2 of you want to go look for another path. If you run into carnobrocs, keep out of their way. Two need to go in case one gets caught but we also need people here to defend."
"I feel pretty good so I will see to the animals and the wagons and be on guard today."
"Nuyok, you should stay off that foot and rest. You did a great job on me, I'm sure you're tired."
"Celeste and Rath, you need rest! No offense but you guys look terrible! You worked too hard last night! Thanks for protecting us so well."
"Handle, I think we need a really good hot meal if you can manage to find something to burn. I'll help you as soon as I see to the oxen and horse"
"Vagrant, Kent, Jareek, and whomever does not go scouting can help me set up the camp a little neater and guard so the others can rest."

"Celeste, Rath, please sit down. You are both hurt and need rest no matter how much you want to help. Nuyok, I will get that for you, your foot looks like something that lost at the pit fights. Handle, I foundx these few things for the fire. It might get a very small one started. Kent, is your load alright? I can't help you with it right now but Vagrant might have time. I hope Faliol and Riccoco are alright... and I hope they find a new route."

"Beka, you should rest as well, your wounds were severe and it would not be wise to strain yourself so soon."

Nuyok's plan will be to take a look over others as well, such as Celeste and Rath, and gauge whether anyone else is in need of his healing. Nuyok will note to Rath, given his great girth, that any healing he may try on him might fail, but if necessary, he would make the effort.

How does the healing work with the separate wounds people have? Does it vary based on whether they are truly separate, vs. limited penetration?

Also, do the healing dice rolled go versus total BODY or current BODY?

How does the healing work with the separate wounds people have?
Adept healing does not consider separate wounds. It works against the total damage done (i.e. variation from the morphic "template" of the patient).

Does it vary based on whether they are truly separate, vs. limited penetration?
No, I consider LP attacks to be separate wounds. This is to help speed healing and make the game more "high fantasy".

Also, do the healing dice rolled go versus total BODY or current BODY?
Total body. If the patient has a natural BOD of 12, and current score is 4, then your target is (12x2)=24. Note that successive attempts are cumulative, but all must take the same time increment. Since Rath is riven, he may be more difficult, as might beasts. You are just not familiar with what is "normal" for them.
You have a full day, so it is theoretically possible for you to lay on an economy sized can o' healing. I doubt anyone would begrudge you an all-day seat on the wagon tomorrow.

Working on the barbarian and the riven as he did earlier upon the merchant, the adept works his wonders. Long skillful fingers pinch together the edges of wounds, erase scratches and bruises, and smoothe torn flesh. The touch is rather intimate and may make some uncomfortable (role-play if desired).
It takes some time for him to accomplish it, and though he does not do it all at once, the task is draining. The morning is spent on Celeste, and two hours finds the young woman up to the peak of health.
In the afternoon, Rath takes over three hours to heal. Nuyok frequently frowns during the process, often unsure about how to proceed. Nevertheless, Rath too is restored to better shape than he has seen in days. Even the lines of the cut he received in Tallon have disappeared.
Nuyok settles back near the fire, and all assembled make room for him.

OOC: For both patients, this is a totally new experience, something heard about but never witnessed. Before today, only Beka, Handle, Kent and posibly Vagrant(?) have ever witnessed adept healing in action. Rath and Celeste, no rest is needed. You are completely healthy. It feels miraculous. You can finally understand why city dwellers might revere such abilities.

Even though she has seen this procedure performed on Beka, Celeste has some reservations about it when it comes down to her turn to be healed. She keeps her concerns to herself (attempting to once again discard a prior superstition). As the healing process continues, she relaxes and lets the adept finish his ministrations.

When completed she looks at the adept with a new perspective, "Thank you Nuyok, I am in your debt. " She rises, expecting to be a bit wobbly on her feet yet, but is pleasantly surprised to find her legs work just fine. She smiles at Nuyok and gives him more than a nod of acknowledgement, perhaps closer to the beginning of a bow.

When Nuyok begins to work his 'magic' on Rath, Celeste will sit nearby. So much has happened in the last day, she has not had a chance to speak much to her barbarian friend.

Celeste feels pretty crappy right about now. She will sleep as long as allowed. Whatever light duty around camp when not sleeping. Last night was horrendous and the carnobrocs reminded her somewhat of the tentacled thing that dragged so many of her comrades, (and maybe her husband as well) into the sea not all that long ago.

If Ricco can manage to wake me, we will go scouting at first light.

Taking all my normal stuff. Making sure I get my rope back before leaving. If I can locate some paper and a pencil/pen, I will take that too. Plan to make good time up to the point where we last saw the carnobrocs, then move slower and start looking for an alternate route downhill of the big fallen tree. This time, Ricco and I will stay close enough to see each other.

In carnobroc territory I will halfmove with dodge putting my HTH level in DCV. Don't want to get grabbed...

If we find a good route, I will mark it with the red yarn on the way back...(at key decision points). If time and daylight permit, I will make a crude map (if we get the paper/pen).

Any ideas Ricco?

Good rolls!
Faliol, your four trumps the other rolls and you manage to find a trail in only half a day. Working together with Riccoco, you to manage to find an older trail that has not overgrown too much. There are a couple of spots that require some machete work. Together you manage to mark out the worst of it, but it will be easier with a full crew.
Tying off yarn at all key points the trail is easily followed by those who know what to look for. There is even a bit of a reward. About the time you estimate will be lunch break tomorrow, there is a fabulous vista. A wide ledge with broad stoney outcroppings looks out over a long drop. Below, the wide Theron inlet rolls through the mists, barely visible through the rain. If there is any let up, it should be a good reward for weary travellers.

I honestly and completely answer Ricco's questions about scouting. Some guild members are touchy about trade secrets, but I am not that type of guild member. I take advantage of Ricco's greater knowledge of tracking to ask some of my own questions.

Working with Ricco is a joy. Cas had proven too difficult to work with as a team, always insisting on doing everything her way. Plus, one should keep his attention on his surroundings when scouting. Attractive vixens are distracting and thereby dangerous in more ways than one...

Have we made it back to the camp, Keith?

I stop just outside of bow range from the camp, motioning for Ricco to stop with me. "Thank you for going with me, Ricco. You are a fine scouting partner..."

"Lesson number 47. Best to let them know we approach and avoid a jumpy sentry's arrow in the chest..."

"Hullo the camp! Friends approach! Don't shoot us or jab us with pointy objects!"

Once inside the camp perimeter, "Greetings all! Good news! Ricco and I found an old trail, that with but a little machete work, should get us around the big tree and hopefully any carnobrocs. There is a nice place to take lunch that should provide a pleasing view, if the weather co-operates. You managed to get a fire going?" I wearily sink down next to the fire and begin working out the cramps in my legs. Happy and content for the first time in days.

Says Jareek. "Well done! Come rest a bit and have some of this stew young Mister Handle has provided. Stones, but we missed ye. Once ye're rested, we'll hear all about this path. And in the morning, we'll see for ourselves."
Once the scouts are settled, he talks a bit lower. Faliol, (and anyone who cares to, he's not actually whispering) is addressed in a hushed tone. "Trail and Town but we've seen a wonder today. I heared tales many a time, but never though I'd see it. You saw those great gaping gashes what was plaguin' Rath and Celeste? They ain't there no more. Nuyok-- Master Nuyok done closed em up like he was a potter workin' clay."
At this point he does lean privately to Faliol and whispers confidentially, "Best be treatin' him right-like. Yer life could depend on him" He leans back and dollops another ladelful into Faliol's and Riccoco's bowls.
Anyone who is close by, really paying attention and has reason to listen can overhear the whisper.

"I could use some stew!" munch, slurp, "Handle, this stew is pretty good! How have you been, Pops? Haven't had much time to talk with you lately..." Remembering the feelings that I felt when I saw Jareek and Kent 'hightailing it' renews the shame I feel on having discovered that they indeed had waited for us. I lower my eyes and suddenly focus on the stew.

I patiently listen to Jareek until he finishes. Whispering softly, "I didn't rip off his toe nail on purpose! I was trying to help, dang it! Their toe nails are useless, anyhow! They cannot even retract them..."

Louder, for all to hear, "Master Nuyok, I have a question. Are you able to sense the carnobrocs with the...whatsits...you know...your mystic ability?"

The weary 'coon takes a healthy portion of the stew and settles down next to Faliol with a satisfied groan. His old leather vest is a horror to behold and his pelt, cleaned in the rain last night still shows many scrapes and bruises. For once, the raccoon listens quietly, only peering bemusedly at the resting Nuyok as the two foxes discuss the merits of Adepts and toenails.

Finally finishing his dinner, Riccoco slips off the shambles of his vest and peers at it long and hard, eventually muttering under his breath, "By the Toad's Hairy Goat, what to be done about this 'coon's poor jerkin?"

Riccoco glances up from his tattered vest and pierces Faliol with a hard look. "The Toad be not known to you, then? A group of savage barbarians of Riven and Hoomans once attacked the Lake and our Bray. The Leader be known as the Toad and his way of battle be terrible. He rode upon a shaggy, leaping mountain goat whose horns felled many a breen. Many of the 'coon folk remember the days of the Toad an' his attacks. A curse of the most foul, it be."

Riccoco frowns at Faliol's casual ribbing. "Fort Lizard be our next stop, foolish fox! After that, how long until Adala? Ifin' this 'coon not be gettin' a new vest or fixin' this one here... The next batch a veggies will be the death of him!"

Tossing his tattered vest to the side, Ricco subsides into unmollified silence. An occasional glance for the other members of the caravan shows his curiosity piqued in the Vagrant's conversation.

"Karkul an' rabbits? By the Toad! You've a story all your own... Vagrant." Riccoco barks out a bit of laughter until he notices Faliol beside him grinning as well. He gives the fox a stern grimace, but can't help but chuckle again.

A day to Fort Lizard? Then roughly how long to Adala? We want to bypass the big tree (and Carnobrocs) and get back on the normal path, not take the un-used path all the way...(if possible)

"I think it will take a little over a day to get to Ft. Lizard. Not sure how long exactly, because we are taking that other route for a spell. Now, from Ft. Lizard to Adala is another 120 kllks, minimum 3 day travel. Again, this could vary and probably will. We should not waste much time, regardless. Just keep placing those feet one in front of the other and soon you will arrive..." I cringe slightly.

Repeated from the previous thread, for clarification
Final fire roll:

3, 1, 2
STUN: 6 BODY: 2

Working together, the party manages to find a sheltered fall of wood. It is even possible the wood might have been placed here long ago by previous travellers. In any case, a good spot is found for a roaring and comfortable fire.

It seems to be a good deterrent for Carnobrocs as well.

Vagrant will don his unusual clothing once they are dry again and then offer his services to anyone that needs it. His coughing seems to have subsided with rest and the warmth of the fire. He seems to be a little more comfortable. Later, when there are others warming at the fire he will ask, "So, anyone have any stories of a great cataclysm in days long ago?

Kent stirs as if pulled from some private reverie.
"Demon-Kings? Of course they existed. That's an odd question. Only barbarians of the furthest wilds--begging your pardons--know nothing of the Rex Infernae."
He eyes you speculatively.

If you are so, damn sure...sorry, I beg your pardon. As you may have heard me mention before. I was injured, not long ago, and not everything is as clear as it should be. Could you fill me in on the time of the demon-king? I am embarrassed not to know of it."

Kent starts to be angry in return, then seems to hear something in Vagrant's tone that make him pause. "You're serious," he says.
"The time of the Demon Kings is not easy to put into words that modern people can understand, or so the Stones tell us."
His voice sounds as if he is reciting, " 'The time of the Demon Kings was the entirety of the Second World. It cannot be measured in years for it was an eternal moment.'
" 'Eternal Moment', that's what the Stones say. Or rather, that is the revelation of the Stones to the Masters." He glances at Nuyok.
"As to what year that was, time was a plaything of the Kings. What is a year to them? They ruled between the world that was and the world that is."
He pauses again, made uncomfortable by the obvious lack of understanding by Vagrant.
"I don't explain things very well. Master Nuyok is learned and has attended to Hall of Art. Though he is no clergyman, I am sure he can give you better answers than I."
He glances imploringly at Nuyok, who reclines by the fire, his face somewhat hooded by a soiled oilcloak.

Cas enjoys the fire light herself, "Some say that the Demon Kings never existed and that it was created in stories to scare cubs around the glow of a fire. But what is really scary is that if Demon Kings never, existed what created those things we saw and how the world was made like this.

Cas pauses for a moment to give everone that moment to reflect, "But I know that there had to have been Demon Kings. Once, when me and my old travel-kin were exploring we came across this weird set of ruins. Inside was some sort of glass cage that had sense broken. In the cage was a human as hard as a rock but looked as normal as anyone here. The human had this club in his hand and wore *shudder* fur. Someone had to have frozen that barbarian and I hate to think it was anything but a Demon King."

Jareek looks intrigued by Cas' tale.
"Stones, yes there were Demon Kings. Why, me own grandpop used to tell such stories as had been handed down...
"He used to claim that all this," he gestures at the jungle and rain," was once ice and snow, as far as you could travel in a week. When the Prometheans battled with the Kings and banished 'em or whatever, they caused the world to bloom forth like a garden.
" 'Course, grandpop also claimed that all that happened long before his own time. But answer me this, young'uns. In all my life, I've met and talked with perhaps a couple hundred foxes like us. Yet I've seen at least as many more that ain't like us. Animals. They don't wear clothes and they don't talk. Why is that? If the Demon Kings didn't give us the gift of thought and speech, why are we different from them? More like humans? I ain't never seen a human animal."

"Well Jareek, I never met my birth parents and that doesn't mean they never existed. Besides, I say that we always existed and that was just a story to make us seem like we are closer to the Demon-Kings than humans. If we only owe our lives to the Demon-Kings, it means humans can say their better than us. You only need to travel enough before you can see that."

Cas shows off her teeth with a proud smile, "I've made enough deals with humans and beasts alike to know they are both just as much a sucker for a good deal as anyone else and if that isn't a sure sign of having the same origin I don't know what is."

Vagrant ponders a moment and then answers, "There were stories deep in history, maybe even before the Old World, of something called evolution. Humans were supposed to be the descendents of the apes according to that line of thinking. Is it hard to imagine an ape trading his hair away for freewill?"

"Maybe you foxes are not really all that different. From what I can tell, this world has existed for a long time and has been majorly changed over and over. Seems sensible to me that other species could grow intelligence like the humans did."

"All of you furry types are smart and clever and I am happy to journey with you. This world is a strange place for one who has lost his understanding of it but the comfort of a group no matter the make up keeps me content."

Perhaps embarrassed by his own conversation Vagrant clears his throat, "All this talking seems to be making me hoarse."

He adjusts his cloak and stares down at the firelight.

Vagrant lets out a long sign, "There isn't much I am afraid. It would be about six months ago that I last remember my actions clearly. I awoke in the care of a rabbit farming community near Karkul. They tried to get my some healing for my ailments to little avail. I remember very little from before that. Some images of an underground ruin outside of Karkul. I remember scrambling out from under some debris after some type of collapse. There were odd pieces of the Old World in the ruin but nothing that made much sense. After I recovered and gave my farewells to my rabbit friends I moved on. I guess the mystery of why I was amongst those ancient objects has inbred me with a fascination with the old. You see, I think that if I were to understand everything I can discover about the Ancient world, the Demon-kings, the Masters, and so much more it could lead me to understand why I ended up in those ruins and why I feel so disconnected from this world. It feels so strange to have no past to reflect on like the rest of you. The more you folks could fill me in the better. I am--*cough cough ."

Again the excitement and constant talk has aggravated his condition, "Excuse me. I haven't spoken this much for as long as I can remember."

He kind of laughs to himself as he realizes the humor in his comment.

He stares at the fire again.

I will do my best to keep a fire burning, at least keeping some charcoal smoldering while I search for more wood. If I need to I'll scrounge some dry wood form off the bottoms of the wagonand cart, taking a few panels or floorboards form them.

Taking time to make the meal healthy, I'l prepare food for the group. I also check wounds and rewrap anly that may need it.

You manage to keep the fire burning without cannibalizing your transportation. Indeed, had you done so, you might have gotten a sharp word from the owners, since a fire is not absolutely necessary for survival. The rain is as warm as bath water and you could not possible build a fire big enough to dry out everything.
Nevertheless, all of the perishables appear to be still well-wrapped. You notice that all the silk bundles are intact and secure, likewise the Dreamleaf bags. Cas and Beka back up your efforts to this end.
The food you provide for the crew is palatable and well-made. Jareek goes so far as to ask for seconds, which he washes down with the contents of a small metal flask.
As for wounds, you are not surprised to see that all wounds are nearly healed and need no tending. Only Nuyok's foot has not been morphically tended to and there is little you can do that has not already been done.

Celeste had been mulling over the days events and had been only half listening to the conversation. At Cas' words she looks up at Cas and then the rest of the group to see what kind of reaction this has provoked. She leans toward Cas and pulls what at first glance appears to be bits of rope tied together. Celeste hands it to Cas, "Here is something you may be interested in learning Little Sister". Upon closer inspection it proves to be individual sections of untwisted rope that have been intertwined and knotted into a repeating pattern with an occasional circular form inserted. The pattern bears a resemblance to some of the scarring on Celestes body.

She leans back to observe Cas' reaction and says quietly, "Monkey born?"

Cas looks at the pattern in the rope. I'm assume this is a fancy braid. Correct me if I'm wrong. "Monkey Born is an expression I think. I used to hear Sei say it a lot. It refers to people who would rather sit on their rump and pick nits rather than do something. You would have to ask Sei for more on what it means but he's dead."

Taking another look at the rope, "Are you a rope weaver? Would you be interested in teaching me?"

OOC: Think of it more as Celtic knotwork in the flesh, oops! that was unintentional, but those are the patterns of the scarring. The rope is separated and interwoven into the same patterns of knotwork. Much like sailors using their knowledge of knots to produce items that eventually became known as the bane of the 70's -- 'macrame'

'Fancy coarse braid' would be a good term for it. Used to decorate clothing, tents, whatever....

'I am not a rope weaver, I was a sailor. Ropes and knots are part of my training, they are useful, each knot has a name that describes it. Yes, I can teach you Cas, your fingers are quick and skilled, you will learn quickly."

"As to your 'Monkey born', I think I understand, though none were allowed to be such in my home. "

Actually, your penalty is -2 ocv. Thanks for reminding me. I've been forgetting to include it when running combat. [evil grin]

I've been thinking about your woodworking skill, too. It's a fairly complex and difficult skill. (I know, I have the miserable-looking results of my own handiwork). Since I have not imposed a penalty so far, and would feel wrong about suddenly remembering to do so now, I would like to ret-con Cas' woodworking tools. I would envision them as highly customized knives, rasps, etc, that only fit or work well in Cas' paws. Possibly they have straps or loops to give her better control. They would be pretty expensive to replace and you probably want to come up with a story(!) about how you acquired them.

Hero Central wouldn't let me post this earlier... here is hoping it will now.
The original reason I purchased the PSL with Stiletto is to show that Cas's long practice with using her hands with such a blade. As I had figured, she has been using that type of blade since she was very young and the exerience would be crude looking but effective.

I don't have a good way to explain how I visualize this use of the dagger other than if you were to hold a pen in your hand with three fingers. The two outer fingers are on your side of the pen while the middle digit is away from you. Yes it feels awkward to hold but after years of practice it is something one could master to use. Oh, to better demonstrate how I see the limited manipulation I try grabbing things with only my thumb, pinky, and middle finger.

The tools you describe sound very good. I had not actually thought about the fact there is more to carving than a blade. I'll think up a story. Cas is good at that.
