The both of you take a leisurely stroll about the fort, looking for Mako. You do not find him in the infirmary, nor at the gate. You take a quick look in at the animals as you pass the stables. You also determine that there are a few more civilians here, and they are very scared. The innkeeper is putting on a brave face, apparently.
There are two trading posts. One sells caravan equipment, the other sells necessities and surplus trade goods. The blacksmith (who sells weapons and armor) is also non-military.
They are all worried that the fort will not hold. They have never known the walls to be breached before. Whatever is going on is beyond their experience. They are also concerned that only Master Ash is left of all who held the lines to the wards. If something should happen to the Master, they would all be at the mercy of the reavers. You let them know that Master Ash has given Nuyok access to the lines, and this does a little to calm them. The blacksmith asks if Nuyok would like any armor.
Finally, after an hour or two of info gathering, you find Mako by the harbor, where he is talking with an otter who seems very perplexed.
Edit: Made Nuyok Visible

Riccoco can't help but break into a smile as he trundles up to Mako, Faliol at his side. "Here be Commander Mako, speakin' well with one o' his Beastly lot! A good mornin' to you! And you, Otter!"

Mako looks over at the approaching beasts. "Morning?" he says, "It's the middle of the afternoon, Bandit. And I'm afraid there's not much good about it. Into the harbor with you, Tekko. I want double patrols. With Pep in the infirmary, it's just you and Streak out there."
The Otter does a comical salute and dives into the water with barely a ripple.
"Take a look out at the mouth," says Mako to you both, gesturing outward from the shore. "See anything?"
"Of course you don't. What you're not seeing is floats. They keep the chain up and let us know it's intact. Tekko just told me it's been cut. It's lying across the bottom now, not doing a damn' thing. I've told him to see if he can fish up the ends. We'll get Blacksmith John out here to see if he can bend a link or two to fix it up. That is, if it's not a tangled snarl down in the silt. He'll need the big tongs and hammers, too. That's spirit chain.
He shades his eyes and looks suspiciously over the water. You notice he is moving stiffly and his torso does not bend much.
"Kings and Reavers! What else can go wrong?"

Ricco steps back a bit from Mako at the news. "The Harbor chain be cut? But,when? We be needin' to get it a fixin' right away. Would it be helpin' if ol' Riccoco went for a bit of a dip with Tekko?" The plucky 'coon immediately hands his trident off to Faliol and begins to strip out of his armor.

I help Ricco remove his armor and gather up his possessions, etc. This sounds risky and I don't like it one bit, but I cannot exactly lecture someone else about risky behavior after that stunt I pulled with the lanterns...

"Ricco, be careful of the currents. I know you are part fish, but even fish can be fooled by currents that they have never swum."

.oO(That sounded dumb..)

"Heck, just be careful, ok?"

Turning to Mako, "Commander, Mr. Nuyok asked me to check on your injury and inform him about your condition. What would you like me to tell him? Would you like him to try again?"

"Try again? Kings, yes! We've still got three or four hours till nightfall. I want to resolve this chain business and then I'll meet him at the infirmary.
"Bandit, go ahead if you got water skill. Tekko and Streak are the otters out there. They'll show you what needs doing."

Riccoco, you strip down to swimming mode and dive into the harbor. There is not much current to worry about, the spits make a perfect eddy. Tekko and Streak meet you out near the mouth.
Tekko speaks. "Hey Bandit, right? I done heard about you and the fox last night. Spiff work, that. So ye can swim as well as run, eh? Well we're trying to find the ends of the chain here. It's actually a net, ye see? When it got broken, the ends slipped the floats and now we've got a tangle down in the silt. May take some time, since ye'll have to keep a weather eye out for Big Krok."
Streak joins in, swimming easily up. "Oh, aye. Big Krok. Nastiest gator you ever laid eyes on. Born killer. Normally he stays upriver, but if he knows there's feudin' afoot, he swims down to snap up carrion."
"And slow swimmers! So look lively, son!" They flip into the water, taking their comical grins wth them.
Down below the water is murkier than you would expect. The rains have increased the flow and stirred up the bottom. Here at the mouth, there is a bit of current to contend with, but nothing you can't handle.

Ricco listens intently to the two otters. As Tekko introduces himself, the 'coon beams a smile, "Tekko? Pep had a thing or two to say about you!" Ricco's smile disolves quickly though when the otters begin talking about Big Krok.

.oO(Gator? Riccoco you old fool. How do you be gettin' yourself into these damn things? you could be enjoyin' a bit o' leaf floatin' down the Sabre! Ho! Keep sharp Big Krok could be hungerin' for 'coon flesh right now!)

Ricco will certainly be keeping a 'weather' eye searching for Big Krok. He'll do his best to help out the otters though, too. The quicker this job is done. The quicker he'll be out of the Harbor!

When Nuyok and Faliol arrive at the Harbor, Riccoco and the otters are still out in the water. It looks like they will be there for some time. Mako is sitting on a piling at the end of the dock, occasional shouting to his soldiers or hearing a report. He does not look happy.

The boat is still docked where shown. The divers are roughly in the middle of the opening between the two spits, roughly 40-50 yards out. A shout carries easily over the water. If you need anything to judge distances by, the tables in the inn courtyard are about 6' or about 1 hex in length.

"Nuyok, I've undergone spirit healing before and this dock is not a good place. Too exposed. The Dockhouse has a good sized window where I can see if anything needs my attention. Until then, Blacksmith John, I want you to hop in that boat with Red, here. Red, you take him out to where you can help him bend those links together. It's gonna be tough, 'cause they're spirit chain, but John, you've got your big tongs. I'm going to be right inside.

Sir, you are the GM's friend! I wish everyone could post their mechanics so succinctly!
Indeed it takes two healings to cure Mako. At the end of that time, he will not be perfectly healed (he has lost more than 8 body), but the wound will be a mere scratch rather than a major impediment. By your estimate, it should no longer bother him and should be gone in a few hours.

In response to your question (and you may ask only a few others while you are working, it takes a lot of concentration):
"I have my suspicions, Master Nuyok. If you could do me the favor of looking through the window over there and concentrating on that length of chain they've got draped over the gunnels of the boat and tell me what you see."

Sorry, this should have been included in the previous post, since you're the only on who has visibility. I'm going to pose the question again where Celeste and Beka can see. Respond there.
In the meantime, a good hard look at the chain shows you that the wards are down. No wait! They can't be down. That would mean that Master Ash is letting ley lines fall. He wouldn't do that. They must be up, then. They must be.
Feel free to be a little hesitent or squirrely in your reply.

The boat is propelled by oars in oarlocks. There is plenty of extra roap, and some other emergency suplies, including a bow and arrows and a pair of large shields.
Since you have little or no experience with such a craft, you quickly learn that it is not as easy as it looks.
DEX roll: 3, 5, 1 STUN: 9 BODY: 2
Nevertheless, you manage to move the boat more-or-less where you want it to be... eventually. John looks at you quizzicly, but says nothing. He has that worried look again.

As far as your memory serves, he gave you ley lines for the outer walls, the chain, and the gator wall (the spit).
It required you to do a little travelling in the wee hours of the night, since transferral requires immediate proximity. The funny thing is, you don't remember seeing or talking to anyone but Master Ash during that time. That's odd... No, no it isn't odd at all. Or is it?

Riccoco, the water is filed with at thousand swirling bubbles. You struggle, but the grip is too strong. Finally, just as you hit the silty bttom, a super-raccoonian effort wrenches you free and you swim for the dim light above.
The light is suddenly blocked by a shadowy figure, long sinewy tail streaming behind it. Big Krok? No, it's Faliol! The fox has his dagger clenched between his teeth and is reaching for your paw.
A strong grip is made and the two of you burst from the top of the water in a spray of bubbles and foam. To be greeted by peals of otter laughter?
Streak and Tekko are lying on their backs in the water, laughing so hard that they can barely speak. "L-l-look out, Bandit! H-h-here hee-hee-he comes again!" chokes out Streak.
"Oh the look! The look! I wish you could have seen the look, Streaky me lad!" shrieks Tekko, "And then when Red dove in like a barbarian pirate! Hahaha!"
"Big Krok? Oh that was a good one! Oh Bandit! Welcome to the otter patrol!"
The look of annoyance on your faces as realization dawns does nothing to make them more serious. If anything, it causes them to loose control even further.
Blacksmith John looks carefully from the otters to you two, as if waiting for your reaction before deciding if this was funny or mean.

OOC: Otters!

There are two boats visible. Faliol has the larger one, which looks like it could comfortable hold 6, it is propelled by oars and oarlocks.
There is another boat at Ash's private dock. It is obviously spirit enhanced and probably has a small paddle wheel somewhere. It also has a tiny covered compartment, not big enough to stand in, but OK for sleeping or hiding from attack. It could hold four comfortably, but only one could be in the covered area at a time.

The otter soldiers are both below, so either Faliol or Riccoco (who could have just surfaced) should answer.

Mako yells back across the water, "I asked Master Nuyok about that. He said it looked a little odd, but was satisfied that it was still up. One way to check, though.
"Tekko, get on over to the chainhouse and give it a command."

"Aye, sir," replies the recently-surfaced otter, all playfullness gone. He swims off to the end of the spit where there is a stone housing for the chain ends and seems to whisper to it. After a heart-stopping moment, the chain begins to relax and then tighten.

John calls out, "That's enough! Don't want to put too much tension on till it's finished!" He seems relieved now. He turns to the folks in the water. "Long as the enhancements on, we're safe from reavers. I guess I must be stronger than I thought, after all."

At that moment, the center span snaps, and the chain sinks back to the bottom.

I grab two coils of rope. I throw one to Ricco and the other to Streak.

"Unless someone has a better idea, I say that we weave a rope through the spirit chain starting at the stone spit Tekko is on and weave a second rope through the chain from the other stone spit. Tekko and Ricco can do that one, Streak and I will do the other. Dive in shifts to speed things up. When tied together, the ropes can hold some of the chain's weight, hopefully keeping it from snapping again. John and I can pull on the loose ends of the ropes simultaneously until they meet, then both of us start connecting links."

"John, once the rope weaving is done, you and I will need to time our tugs or we will just pull the boat towards one of the spits. Do you have an extra pair of tongs for me? Will my plan work?"

No sooner is this done than sure enough, around the nearest bend in the river churns a military paddleboat, snapping the pennants of Tallon. Several soldiers can be barely seen upon the deck. Some are waving.

A thin, high-pitched screaming noise, seemingly coming from everywhere. Faliol's fur is wet, but John's long dry hair seems to be rising slowly of its own accord. A sharp smell of ozone is faintly detectable as well...

Shooting a wild-eyed look at Faliol, he shouts, "Get to shore, Faliol! Get to shore! Riccoco heard the Reavers fly up the water like the Demon Kings!"

Are the soldiers on the boat looking Twisted, Keith? What about the priest? That means he is an Adept, right? Is he attempting to 'turn' the Reaver? Do we need to turn the boat, or, will it not split the warding chain? If the cavalry isn't Riven... Can they get the paddleboat through the warding chain without harming it and still stopping the Reaver?

Reaver attack

Neither of you has had a lot of exerience in dealing with reavers. You are not positive what they can and can't do. However, you may reason that since there are krakens (riven creatures of the water), that reavers must be able to function underwater or at least affect things below the surface.
Nevertheless, turning the boat seems like the most prudent course of action. Since it has oarlocks, Faliol is facing the scene while headed for the shore. Ricco can backstroke and still see.
For a while the men on the boat seem unaware of the danger. Then they hear the second blast that Tekko sounds: one short blast-- one long. They spring in to action. The majority of them scramble into the small cabin. Perhaps it is warded. The priest and one other stand on deck. Both have lumina crystals. They are holding their arms out in a gesture of defiance or warding.
To their everlasting credit, they do not flinch when five reavers, from five separate directions come howling over the water at them. On of them comes screaming along the outside of the eastern spit, passing just beyond the chain, less than a dozen yards from you.
"Keep paddling, Red!" shouts Tekko, "That boat's a flat bottom. It can skim right over the chain! Get yourselves back! If that chain gives way, you'll be sitting in the mouth of the chimera!*"
Back on the barge, the priest and the second adept seem to be holding their own. The reavers nearly engulf them, only to be sent away by sheer willpower. It does not look as if they can keep up this pace long, though.

*Idiom: the maw of doom, ground zero, etc.

As the boat and the Raccoon hit the dock at roughly the same time, a couple of soldiers come running up from the direction of the gate. Their faces turn from concern to horror as they see the boat under attack.
The transport is still heading at full speed for the harbor. It seems their intention to skip over the top of the chain. (remember, the chain is there to keep out reavers and slow down gators, not boats.)
still over a hundred yards form the chain, the boat suddenly lurches violently. The paddles strain and nearly break as all forward motion stops. You can hear wood creak and crack even from where you stand, dripping. The priest is flung into the forward rail, but the other adept flies overboard landing in the water. The reavers scream as they converge like hungry predators. Just beyond their scream, you can hear a shriek of horror from the adept. it is a small mercy to the witnesses that they cannot see his final moments, obscured by five shrieking globes.
"P-prometheus preserve us..." whispers one of the soldiers.
Then the sun goes down and the last light leaves the sky.

"Wolf packs. They can bring down game far bigger and more dangerous than any lone wolf. Why? Because of the advantage of numbers. One wolf streaks in from the back while the wolf that has the attention of the prey fades away. Slowly but surely, they take out large prey."

Gesturing towards the paddleboat, "Right now, Father Jeo is the large prey being hunted by the wolf pack. He will eventually get too tired to continue and they will pull him down. Then those reavers will concentrate on us and pull us down. One adept at a time. One beast or human at a time."

With Nuyok in this boat and Ash in his, we form a triangle of safety for the men on the boat with Father Jeo at the apex. While Father Jeo stays on the boat, maybe the men can swim across the chain and into the protection of the harbor."

Looking at Tekko, "That is my plan."

Tekko looks back, impressed. "I ought to get out in the wilds more often," he says. "Sounds good. I just hope your little pal can run as fast as his tongue! Father Jeo can't last much longer."

...than Ricco's tongue and they are his chunky thighs. You didn't see him setting up the lanterns outside the wall? He was a black and white blur... Courageous little fellow. The Twisted were waiting for him and he went anyway. I apologize for his sharp tongue of late. If it all goes bad out there, I want you and Streak to know that it has been an honor working with you guys."

Riccoco, checking at the boathouse, you find no Mako or Nuyok. There is an attendant craftsman, who tells you, "The Commander left some time ago. I believe he was going to look at the chain and then head over to talk to the Master.
"Your companion, the young master, left about the same time. Don't rightly know where he went, though."
You know that was the better part of an hour ago, maybe more.

The huffing 'coon rushes from the Boathouse. Pausing briefly, Riccoco glances up towards the other buildings of Fort Lizard.

.oO(Where would Master Nuyok be? The Infirmary? The Inn? No! Master Ash to discuss the warding chain?)

Riccoco pounds across the road and around the grassy hill. Reaching the low fence around Master Ash's Manor, he vaults over it and begins to call out for the other Adept, "Master Nuyok! Nuyok!!

Slow down there speedy! : )
You are running to Master Ash's. The wall is a 6-7 foot stone wall with glass set in the top. It cannot be hopped. Also, there are a few unresolved things at the manor gate with other characters. I'm going to have to 'put you in the queue' so to speak. You'll probably meet up with Vagrant at the Manor Gate, but not just yet.
Thanks for your patience. While you wait, you may listen to any of the fine musical selections fromthe Savage Earth CD. May I suggest "Moon Reaver"?

I take it back!!

The picture does not resemble creepy Silent Bob!

It looks like Mel Gibson from Hamlet.

Is this enough to avert Faliol's rivening?

: confused :
Cripes! The boss is coming!
