The Lizard RoadAll of the "getting on the cart" posts from previous thread still stand and may be continued here if desired. There are a couple of hanging sub-plots from the previous thread that will be handled with limited visibility.

If you are going to make any special purchases or sales before leaving, please note them on the Bank. (Click the coin above)

The day comes at last when the party is ready to leave the Lizard. All party members have had a chance to heal and recuperate. Celeste is still not 100% but is certainly able to travel and fight.

Repeated from previous thread. Thi sis assumed to be taking place the morning of your departure (since you certainly don't want to give them time to get even!)
The two marine mammals are easily found down at the harbor. Tekko is on the dock, splicing some rope, while Streak is out in the harbor. At your approach and presumed request, Tekko calls in Streak. The otter shoots up onto the dock. They appear bright and chipper as always.

The day is bright as well, with many more people about than when you first arrived. The doors to the boathouse are open and you can see the carpenter doing some minor maintenance alongside his assistant. Soldiers are visible along the walls.

Riccoco grabs Faliol's arm and heads after Nuyok at a good, roundabout clip. "We be gettin' an eyefull of the Otter Revenge, Red!" He slips them past a few building and up behind a cart.

Riccoco peaks over the top. "Let's see how that Adept be doin' the dirty deed, now!"

OOC: Transferred from the Healing and Planning thread.

"Good day to each of you. How goes the Fort security down here?" Nuyok pinches off a piece of baklava as if to take a bite. "Has Father Jeo been able to do anything on enchanting the harbor chain?" Nuyok will pause during the conversation, appear to realize something, and say "Sorry about my manners, I'm a little distracted, since we will be leaving soon," and nonchalantly offers each of the Otters some baklava. Continuing, "I assume there still have been no further sitings of Reavers?"

The otters look at the baklava in the outstretched hand. They exchange a look, then Tekko takes a piece and says, "Right thankful there, Master." Streak likewise accepts a nearly three-week old piece of pastry. "It's a bit... eh, worn, eh there?" he says, sniffing at it. Again they exchange a look.
Tekko dips his head respectfully. "Beggin' yer pardon gracious Master," he says, "but it be bad manners, so to speak, to eat before a Master. Please sir. You eat first."

.oO(Three week old? Those damned beasts did not do a good job of preparing this?!)

With the small bit already in hand, Nuyok lightly crumbles it as he moves to wipe his face, giving the appearance of a few crumbs being wiped from around his mouth, and says "I'm full myself, just finished a big breakfast at the inn before we depart today, where this came from." Not focusing on the baklava, Nuyok attempts to deflect the conversation and continues on "Before we leave, though, how's the harbor safety?"

He's an adept right enough, and brave as they come, but we'll have to wait for the new Master from Tallon before we're truly safe again."

Rath, you are called in to see Commander Mako shortly before the caravan is due to leave. His face is long and he looks grim indeed.
"Big Fella, sit down. I got some hard news, and I only now one way to say this kind of stuff. Last night there was a fight. It seems some of the soldiers on patrol ran into some of the folk you've been working with. There are still a lot of hard feelings over the reaver attacks. Anyway, long story short: Some crazy-mad riven attacked the patrol. He was a manic cuss with yellow skin and green hair. People joined in on each side and one of the patrol was seriously injured. Maybe you met him? His name's Shado. The yellow fella was killed and some of the riven as well.
I uh... I can't see any way your plan can work now. Not while tempers are so hot. Maybe some day you can do this thing, but if I can't guarantee safety for either side, I ain't gonna do this.
"Sorry, Rath, but that's the way it's gotta be."
He stands, and then suddenly remembers something.
"Oh, I wanted to mention. Adala has a Riven colony. I don't know much about it. No one around here does. But I've heard rumors that the Adalan Archon has made provisions for the riven of the city. You might want to check it out. But if you do, be careful. Such 'charities' are rarely charitable."

Beka AK: Caravan Routes, 12-
Faliol AK: Caravan Routes of Merikia, 11-

Beka and Faliol are two characters with roughly equal knowledge of Adala. You can both be assumed to have visited it at least once in the past, possibly more. Most of your knowledge is about how to get there, but that implies some basic knowledge of the city as well.

From the website:
Adala is probably the oldest cty in the league, though not as rich or powerful as most. Adala is the site of the Games, held every two years. The Games are an athletic competition in a variety of track-and-field type events. Spirit enhancement is strictly forbidden in most events, though there are special competitions for adepts held once every ten years.
Exports: Wines and other spirits
Standing Stones: The High Circle

Some other bits and pieces:
Beasts will not get as good a price on goods as humans will. It might be prudent to let any beasts in the caravan in on this.
All trading with any chance of getting a good price should be done on Market Day. It will take you 3-4 days o get to Adala if all goes well(!), Marketday is 5 days hence, so you have a little comfort space.

Beasts are controlled in the areas of the city they may enter. Whereas in Tallon there are no longer any such laws, Adala will not allow any beasts into the inner city. If you wish to all stay in the same inn, it will not be a nice one.

(Although Tallon has its "Old Circle" with restricted access, the restrictions are primarily economic and status-drive, not racial.)

The inner city is an island reachable by three bridges.

The police of Adala are fairly brutal, but not particularly corrupt.

The games are due to be held this year. None of you has sport knowledge skills, so you do not know the actual date they are held. The games are held in a great cleared are outside the walls, but within the farmlands and picketed fields.

The Archon of Adala is a woman named Drakara.

The route will take you near Black Lake, which sometimes has gator trouble.

Before your caravan actually leaves the fort, you are approached by Mako, Doom, Blacksmith John and several others. Hearty goodbyes are said.
Mako speaks for them. "I wanted to say thanks for your help during the recent... unpleasant happenings. You all stood with us in a dark hour. Some of you were with me when Ash... fell. Only those of us who were with the Master at the end can really appreciate all he did.
"I knew the Master for several years. He was a generous man. I know how he'd feel about your participation in the events of that night. I don't think he'd want you to leave here... eh, empty handed. Some of you were lent weapons and armor when you got here. I can't give them to you; they're stamped army property. But I don't want your lot going out there unprepared. I've worked with the Quartermaster and Blacksmith John to put together these."
He gestures to Doom, who unrolls a large bundle. Inside are non-army equivalents of any weapons or armor you might have borrowed from the Fort's supplies. Also, there are new oilcloaks for the entire party.
Mako looks you each in the eye. "Stay dry. Stay safe."

Doom rolls his eyes slightly as if to say "Fat chance of either..."

Actually, I had assumed that since Nuyok was training in the use of a bow, he would not want to depend on borrowing Faliol's all the time. After all, he might get jealous of all the attention lavished on Betsy. Most of your training was probably done on a more human-designed army bow.
Hence, there is a bow there.
Likewise with anyone else who spent their XP on a weapon familiarity.

I nod as the gifts are presented and pick up one of the oil cloaks. As the others are looking over the weapons they had borrowed, I pick up a short sword and slip it into my belt. Moments later it is covered by the newly donned cloak and I am back to rigging the wagon.
this is contingent on the fact that there is a short swrod to pick up, otherwise I take a cloak and if any weapons are left behind I will pick up one, doesn't matter what it is, just so we get it and it isn't returned to the fort.

"I understand your group is moving out tomorrow morning, Master. You might not be back here soon. If you need anything before you leave..."--bold yet innocent stare-- "Anything... You have only to knock on my door. I'll be up most of the night. If you're up, come visit."

"I just want you all to know how proud I am of all of you. We are about to leave for Adala which we hope will only be three or four days away.

Here are some things I think some of you might want to know about Adala.

Beasts are controlled in the areas of the city they may enter. Whereas in Tallon there are no longer any such laws, Adala will not allow any beasts into the inner city. Since we wish to all stay in the same inn, it will not be a nice one.

I also know that some of you (indicating the beastfolk) wish to do some trading. I will do this for 10 percent of the difference.

Certainly anything there would only pale in comparison to that which we encoutered in the Fort, and as Cas mentioned, there may be some worthwhile items therein to trade. Further, we're only talking a brief side excursion, should the opportunity present itself, not a full-on exploration or anything that would significantly delay our progress to Adala."

"I first thought the same as you Beka, when Nuyok mentioned watching for the Demon King ruins. But he has a good point in that, well if bandits lived there and Horn's group went through it and took the likely most valued thing, What more is there to be afraid of. I don't much expect to find anythin' of any worth though. I figure the bandits and then Horn's group would have picked it clean. But if it doesn't make us miss the profits of Market Day or is easy to get to on the way back, I think we could have us a look."

I look around to see the faces of the rest of the assembled group, " I'd like to see what a Demon King place looks like if nothing else. How many can tell that story, having been in the home of a Demon King. Should be worth a drink or two at the tavern. Isn't a good tale a trader's bread and butter?," ending with a little wink in Beka's direction.

" Finaly showed , eh? Good, I wasn't sure if I was doin' this right. Let me watch ya do one and then check me after I hitch up the other."

I nod and give a quick smile.

After Beka moves away and is busy elsewhere, I whisper to Cas as we get the wagon ready,
" Don't know if you saw our boss last night, but I figured talkin' about somethin' was prefered to lettin' her pick the subject. If ya overheard what I said, it was mainly for that reason. I actually prefer sittin' on the drivin' bench to walkin' aside the wagon as a guard... Though I coud do without dealn' with these big stupid animals."

I step away just before my foot is stepped on by an oxen and cuff the brut on the flank, "Hey, watch yer step there... stoneless son of a cow!"

I look at the oxen and then to Cas, " You don't think he heard me about not likin' to deal with the animals, do ya?"

" I don't know, I mean you are hired as the driver and I was hired as a guard. I think Beka will have to decide if she wants us trading duties. I mean I can scout, though I know nothing of tracks and such, I have pretty good senses and can get around silently and hide well. "

I think about the fox's likely keen sense of smell and wonder if she has any real training in tracking,

" I guess I don't mind if Beka thinks it is ok. Prometheus knows I would rather ride than walk. We should all do whatever we can when it is needed to get there safe. I hope you will be around though when the animals act up, cause I can only handle them when they are doing what they are supposed to do."

On to Adala, Talking with Vagrant

At a discrete time, Nuyok will converse with Vagrant "Vagrant, there is more to you than meets the eye, I think we can agree on that. Also, I gather you have an interest in knowing more of the Demon Kings' time, as well as an interest in relics of by-gone times. Finally, you interacted with Horn a fair amount, and may have some useful knowledge on what I'm about to say." Nuyok pauses, gauges Vagrant's reaction, and if he's still seemily interested / willing to continue, Nuyok says "As you may or may not know, Ash's artifact was retrieved from a Demon King Temple by Horn, who slew some bandits in the process. Also Horn's crew was in possession of statutes, and appears to have encountered the bandits on the way to the Fort from Adala, suggesting the Temple is along our path to Adala. The name of this place is "Mich Mice" - does that mean anything to you? Anyway, this Temple likely is not too far off the beaten path, as it would not have to be to still be hidden in this thick jungle, and also because the bandits were using it, presumably as a base for their banditry. This Temple may have information of interest to you, and should be bereft of danger, given the bandits were slain and the artifact removed. So if you're interested, on our way to Adala, try to keep an eye out for anything associated with the Demon Kings such as ruins, bandit corpses slain weeks ago by Horn's crew, the statutes carried by Horn's crew, or anything else that you would know of that would lead us to this place."

Vagrant said "I certainly can't ask for others to make a detour just

If others were interested and I would grateful for the

Nuyok responds "I don't think any of us are interested in trudging through the jungle but so far off course, but if we can happen upon the ruin reasonably close to the path, a couple hour detour to check them out while the animals rest shouldn't be a problem."

A tall, spare man greets you at the entrance to the Sanctuary. He is wearing obviously priestly vestments. He looks far too mundane and bookish to be the man people have said made a harrowing journey to Tallon for reinforcements. He is rather kindly-looking, older, and has a short greying beard.
If he is surprised to see a fierce female barbarian warrior show up on his threshold, he does not show it.
"Prometheus be with you, daughter," he begins in a rich baritone, surprising from his thin frame. "What can I do for you?"

Celeste seems unsure of where to start but eventually tells Father Jeo of her strange dreams in the aftermath of the rooftop battle. "My people do not believe as yours do. Our Gods like us, but they are greater beings. They are warriors like no other. They rule the deep and the people who live by the deep. They live in the depths of the ocean and raise the winds to aid their people. I had thought my people had been particularly favored by the Gods of the Deep." Celeste pauses before continuing. "Your people seem to worship rocks? I keep hearing my companions speak of the 'stones'. And yet, I have witnessed such things as my gods would have no explanation for. I have in fact, benefited from those things I have seen. I would most likely be deqd and buried by now if not for the gifts of Master Nuyok. I have been told he could have died as well from the fact that he gave and gave of himself to heal Cas and then me. " She seems at a loss for words, "What I am trying to say, I think, is that during all of this, and especially when I was near death, never once did I feel the presence of my 'gods' or see any evidence that they were nearby to help me. I have lost my connection with them. " She looks to him for some explanation to this problem she has rarely considered before.

Teachings

Father Jeo listens carefully to your dream and your tale.
His rich baritone begins, "I know little of the gods of barbarian peoples. Gods is not a word we use, really. We do pray occasionally for divine intercession, but those to whom we pray were once men like us. Women, too. They have merged with Cosmos and can be interceded through invocation to the Deus... But I see these terms mean nothing to you..."
He sighs, and invites you inside to sit.
"I do not know what your tribes teach you of history, but the world was once very different. An ancient race filled it. They were wicked and cruel, but not as wicked and cruel as their conquerors. The Demon Kings destroyed their world and ruled for a timeless time. They were finally deposed by our forebears. "Our" in this case refers to adepts, like Adept Nuyok and myself. And the term forebears is used loosely, since we are their spiritual descendants, not their blood kin. We follow their teachings.
"Their teachings are recorded by the stones you have heard spoken of. It is through them and the daily excersize of our abilities that their presence is affirmed. Because our power continues to flow from us and keep us strong, we know that the Prometheans were real and intercede.
"As to where they are, who can say? When we die, our spirits join Cosmos, the great spirit that is the world and everything in it. Yours too. When a rock is crumbled to dust, the spirit of the rock endures in Cosmos, imperishable. Deus is the word for the ineffable, the creator who moves all spirit. Prometheus may be nestled in the bosom of Deus. Deus alone knows."
He smiles, "does any of this help?"

But, I thank you for your time, you have given me something to think about on the journey to Adala. If you are still here when we make our return journey, may I come and speak with you again?"
