The Lizard Road Feel free to finish any fort-based conversations on the previous thread.
The caravan begins moving on. The oxen and horse are strong and whole. Provisions are still adequate for the trip to Adala. Fort scouts have said the first day of their trip should be an easy one.
And is is. Leaving the fort behind is difficult; it has become an island of security. Now you shall have to give up soft beds and return to keeping watches in the midst of wild lands.
The jungle is humid and steamy. In fact, in the absence of rain, the tempreature begins to climb. The first day is bad, but the second is worse. Only the shade of the canopy gives you any relief. Insects bother those without fur, and it is torture to draw an oilcloak around for protection. Vagrant in particular looks bad off and his wheezing increases notably.
Night brings small relief as you find a camp nestled between two huge boulders uphill from a small trickling stream. Even the stream water is no comfort, being muddy and warm.
The next day is just as hot, and if possible, more humid. You believe you may be in a valley bewteen two ridges that shield you from any coastal breeze.
Shortly after noon, the caravan comes within sight of the shore of a huge lake. The land around the lake is dark and rich, as if regularly covered by the effluvium of floodwaters. The trees are stunted and there is very little undergrowth. There has obviously been no flooding recently, since the mud is cracked.
It is here that bodies are discovered. There are four human corpses, or the scattered remains of such. There is very little left that has not been despoiled by predators. There are a few bones, some ragged pieces of clothes and a broken knife. There may be more about about the sun is absolutely merciless here. There are a few trees and rounded rocks, but no real shade.

Cas will stop the cart and the oxen. Better to be safe before pressing on. She will look to find any signs of cart tracks that may have been here or even better... abandon carts. If she bares no results, she will examine the bodies. She is curious if they might be the 'bandits' or other people from more civilizied lands.

"The tracks have been obscured by rain, more than 3 days past. If these are Horn's bandits, they would have been here for at least 3 weeks. That skull over there has a sword-like nick, but it could have been caused by something else. See those animal prints leading to and from the lake? The local animals have consumed just about anything that was digestible. I don't see human tracks but I do see old wagon ruts."

I sigh loudly, "Sorry Miss Beka, these remains have been here far too long for me to glean anything more definitive..."

OOC: Keith, of the animal tracks that I see, are any indicative of gators?

I trot a dozen feet ahead before turning back.

"Remember this fact as you are tempted to daydream - nobody has been by here recently, so everything with an appetite is liable to be that much more desperate, that much more aggressive. The wilds are a harsh teacher of lessons."

Tracks are hard to read. Though it has not rained here in the last 2-3 days, it certainly has before that. If these are the bandits Horn spoke of, they would have lain hear for at least 3 weeks. It also looks like a lousy place for an ambush. There's not much cover.

Cause of death? maybe combat. One of the skulls has a nick that might have been caused by a sword. Of the bodies, only about 30% of each remains, mostly in bones, cloth and other indigestibles.

You cannot see any sign of human tracks, though there are animal prints to and from the direction of the lake. There are occasional wagon ruts along the path you have followed, but you have seen no wagon.

Nuyok will look over the bodies and the area around the party, looking first to be sure we are not in a position to be ambushed, then looking at the bodies, including to try to see what sort of people they were (i.e., any scraps of armor? appear weathered from travel or calloused of hands from work? understanding that there might not be much to tell from...), and how the people may have been killed (skull smashed, large gashes, etc.).

Those who examine the bodies discover only a little more than has already been stated.
Cas, you are pretty sure this was a combat that killed them. There are no good tracks to show how they got there, there has been too much rain for the mud to hold tracks.
Faliol, yes, there are indication nearby that could be gator marks, but it is unclear if they were the cause of death or merely corpsse-despoilers.
Nuyok, all of the remains are human.

They certainly would fit Horn's tale of bandits.

As night falls, you are once again in heavier foliage. Vagrant has begged to be allowed to ride and he sounded so pathetic no one had the heart to refuse him a seat on the wagon. Darkness is drawing near but there does not seem to be an easily defensible campsite. This stretch of jungle is boggy and wet. Only the road has any degree of solidity and even then several times the wheels have nearly caught. There are many trees, but they are scraggly stunted things.
The flies have continued to bite. Handle has found a tree sap that provides a little relief, but it is uncomfortable to wear and smells funny. This is by far the most miserable weather you have yet encountered.
Worse, evening is bringing no relief.
As you arrange the wagons to provide minimal cover, Vagrant suddenly pitches over. His breathing is rapid and shallow.

You unwrap Vagrants bandages and rags. Your healing of him before did not find it necessary to unwrap much but this time his body temperature is so high you feel it is necessary to unwrap him quite a bit. His rags are soaked with sweat and as you remove layers you are astounded by how many layers there really are. Then you get to the level closest to the skin. As you peel it back from the left side of his body some of his skin comes with it. Your spirit sense did not do justice to the illness that afflicts Vagrant. You look up and down the length of his newly unwrapped body and see that nearly the entire left side of his body is covered in sores that look, to the best of your knowledge, like burns. To be blunt, it is truthly sickening to behold.

Change Shape

Nuyok is concerned that if Vagrant's body needs to continue to be covered such as this, that the repressive heat will only continue this cycle on him, and is contemplating at least some attempt at minimizing the burned morphia, which while not sure how good he can do it, would hopefully mean he would not need but so many layers as the change occurred over time. Of course he has limited skill with such, but is considering at least making an initial attempt (though multiple attempts would probably be needed for stacking purposes) taking an hour or so while otherwise treating him.

As for the mechanics, if done:
Base roll, 8-
8D6 of Transform (Manip. Morphia), -4 to roll
1 Hour spent, +3 to roll
Adjustment to transformation time (from 1 year to 1 month), -2 to roll? (two steps on time chart? wasn't sure if this was "adjustable" or if it is solely a factor of the chart #s?)
"Human" to Human, +3 to roll ? (the #s on the chart seem to be listed inverted, plus I wasn't sure how "Human" he was; wasn't sure if this was a mod to the time chart solely or also affect the roll success?)
Mild change (horribly burned to less so (vs. not at all)), any mod?

Lots of questions above for you to chew on ; )

Changing shape

Actually, human to human is 1 week (-3 steps), and yes, the chart indicates time chart steps, not roll mod.s The base time to actually perform the devotion is still one turn.
Roll mods:
Base 8-
Extra time, 1 hour+3
8 dice, -4
Roll = 7-

Time for Vagrant to actually transform (he does this 'naturally' by growing into the new shape)
Base time, 1 year
Vast similarity, human to human, -3 steps
Transformation time, 1 week

It seems to me from what you have posted that this is a good usage of change shape.

Couple of things to consider:
Vagrant's morphia is pretty unusual to begin with. You have no idea what his "baseline" shape is. Naturally, one that is more familiar to you will be easier, but this is SFX only. Choose his appearance as you will.

Alter your amount of time spent if you wish to increase your chances, but longer than 5 hours will require a safe place to concentrate.

Burned

A few follow-up questions:
1. With the target # being BODYx3 (i.e., 33 for Vagrant), and with 8D6 (avg. roll 28), assuming avg roll, 2 successes would be needed.
a. Is there any effect from a lesser result (i.e., mild transform, like is mentioned in the 5e book)?
b. How long apart can multiple tries be done in? (probably something to do with the fade rate...)
2. Given his odd Morphia, any particular negative to the roll?
3. Any reason not to simply try for an unburned person vs. less burned person?

In sum, with a 7- for an hour, that'd be all Nuyok would want to do in a given day (given LTE considerations while traveling, and no more time spent given traveling), Nuyok would be willing to try that for a few days to see if he has any success. Obviously the first try wouldn't be stopped by Vagrant, but once he's "with it", that might affect Nuyok trying. Primarily Nuyok is concerned with whether he will make it, and to try to relieve some of his condition, moreso than worrying about trying to bring him back "whole" again.

You pose good questions!
1)
a. I would say that yes, there would be a limited effect as described, but it would probably fade pretty quickly unless the transformation was successfully completed. There would not be a long-term 'partial transform'.
b. I would think that the time between attempts could not be more than one step up the time chart. Thus a one hour try would have to be followed up within five hours, a five hour try would have to be followed up by the next day, etc. I could be a little flexible. During that interval period, a partial transform could be in effect.
Realistically, yes, it should have to do with the fade rate, but there are so many variables there that I think the time chart way is simpler.

2) No negtive to the roll, simply a lack of a baseline to restore. You have no idea what to return him to.

3) You can go for an unburned person without further penalty.

That night, while Vagrant is unwrapped, Nuyok would go ahead and make an initial attempt on him, perhaps even a fleeting partial success will help him in the short-term. (Not expecting success though!)

The camp is pretty sparse in terms of cover, as noted. It will be difficult to get a decent fire going, the ground is so boggy. There are also numerous small, dark, shallow pools everywhere, so water is not a problem. Anyone with Jungle survival will quickly discover some edible roots nearby (a tuber resembling a potato) so you may fill your bellies if you can start a fire.
Darkness settles quickly.
I need to know (from the first person who posts, so we don't need to wait three days...) who is going to take which watch and what special precautions will be taken.

Nuyok is tending Vagrant, and I will post the results as soon as that is resolved. He does not appear to be in critical condition though.

Rath and Celeste will take first watch as Handle is cooking and I'm setting up camp.

Nuyok and Cas, will you take the middle watch please as it is a time when your spirit sight and your beast eyes will be most useful.

Faliol and Riccoco Please take last watch. Handle and I will be available in case you feel you need more eyes.

It is about an hour before dawn. The jungle is never quiet, and this area is no exception. If anything, the noise of insects is near deafening. Nevertheless, you both immediately pick up your ears at a "slither-splish" sound from one of the numerous pools.
It might be a nocturnal herbivore.
It might be a hungry gator.
The noise does not repeat, and though you are pretty sure of the direction (south of the road), the distance is unclear. You see nothing out of the ordinary.

Then I creep to the nearest muscle (Rath or Celeste or Beka). Gentle shaking, need for silence, point to the south. Assuming Nuyok has done his thing by this point, I turn and look at him.

Cas has no problem with middle watch. She will sit on the edge of the cart, a distance from the fire so that her location is not easily seen from its pale glow. She will use a knife to strip the bark from a couple of potential walking sticks she found a while back but will do so quiet enough and slow enough as to not disturb her watch.

Should she ever feel tired for a moment, she will get up and stealthfully pace the perimeter of the camp.

Eventually, the last members of the party are awakened. Those of you who are just now coming aware were wakened by a stealthy Riccoco, who places a digit against his muzzle indicating silence. Those who are already awake seem to be in a state of silent alert, peering into the jungle depths. It is still shortly before dawn. If you had a clear horizon, there might be a glow. In the swampy morass you have camped in, it is still dark enough to see the stars.

Faliol and Cas flank the objective from opposite sides. The way is difficult and treacherous. Frequently there are sucking bogs that threaten to clutch at your legs. Within minutes, you both spot something unusual from opposite sides. There in the marshy, boggy ground is a boat.
Similar to a raft with a cabin, it is some kind of flat-bottom craft, the type you would pole. It is grounded upon a low bank. There is no sign of life or light from it. The cabin is enclosed with a single door that leads onto the foredeck. There are shuttered window on the other cabin walls. The boat is quite small, less than fifteen feet in length. The cabin is about 10'x10' with a five foot height. It is old and worn, but in decent enough shape that it looks like it could float.
If you could describe it in one word, that word would probably be: creepy.

Faliol, your stealth roll was better; you will see Cas before she sees you.

Hostile:
Overpower them as quickly as possible. Pin them down and let them know they are going to get really hurt if they fight.

Unknown:
Cas will be cautious but try and get information from the individuals within before proceeding.

The second thing you notice upon opening the door is that there are bodies inside. The first thing you notice is the smell. The stink of death, feces, and blood is thick and palpable. In fact, it smells as if whoever is in there has been dead for some time.
Neither of you has discriminatory smell, so there is no further information from that quarter. However, you do see bodies inside. They appear to be small and beast-kind, though the species is unclear in the poor light. The smell is honestly enough to make you squint.

If either of you (players) has ever smelled rotted meat, you know that it is one of the truly most repellent smells in the world. It will require an Ego roll to continue a search. On the other hand, the boat shows no sign of valuables or wealth. I will let you make Ego rolls on the honor system to proceed, otherwise, you will feel compelled to slam the door and back quickly away.

The bodies lie about the tiny cabin in various poses of death. Unless you have a light source, you won't get much information. You believe them to be some sort of coon or possum or beaver. They're small, stocky types. If you have a light source or are prepared to drag one over to the camp, or perhaps closely examine the dead body (using paws, etc.) you can't tell too much more. The bodies don't look too decomposed, but the smell says otherwise. There are also no missing limbs or gaping wounds. Disease?

OOC: Is this wooden door type sound coming from the door we opened or is this something altogether different?

OOC: Am I seeing the two brownies from "Willow" exiting a tree trunk...."I am the leader, I say we go this way!"

Wooden door? Celeste draws her magnificent falchion from its scabbard. She stealthily moves in the direction of the sound, and pauses when she hears Beka's challenge to the unseen owners of the muffled voices.

Presumably we see no structure? Nuyok will maintain his position, draw his sword, and continue to look around, not just where the sounds and creatures were, but behind the party as well.

OOC: Nuyok included incase his spirit sense is on.

Cas looks at the direction that Nuyok points. For sake of clarity, lets say that this direction is North. Cas is going to stealthfully move East until outside the range of the main group, perhaps taking advantage of jungle cover. She will move North while frequently glancing West to where about the figure should be. Once she knows where the figure is, she will travel North enough that it is safe to go West and come in from behind.

Unfortunately, Nuyok's finger has no way of indicating range, so you are not sure how far out to go before cutting sideways. Nevertheless, you are out there slogging through bogland, frequently in knee-deep water.

So Vagrant is awake? Is there anyone near him? Are his bandages nearby? Are there still cloaks covering his bed area?

Vagrant, you awaken as the others are being nudged about by Riccoco. You feel MUCH better than you did earlier. The night is still hot and oppressive, but they have managed to bring your core temperature down. Yes, your bed area, such as it is, is still screened.
Your bandages are neatly rolled or folded nearby. The nastier bits have been cleaned a bit.
Cripes! The boss is coming!
