Jo the apprentice of Candu the Clothier is able to lead you to the compound of Throne. Throne is a merchant, very wealthy. His compound is ample evidence of this. Though it is within the city walls, it is practically a fortress unto itself. High walls surround the estate, and though they are not broad enough to walk upon, there appears to be a catwalk behind them, for armed mercenaries walk with their heads and shoulders just above the level of the top.
Jo excuses himself now, as the hour is late. He leaves you with a final word of advice. "Master and Misters, use caution. I never heard anything bad about Merchant Throne, but I never heard much good either. People say he's a right strange one." With that cryptic farewell, he races down the street towards Candu's.
There is a gate in the wall. It is heavy and ornate, consisting of two gates which meet in the middle and are secured with a thick metal bar. The tops of the gates are pointed and look to be finished with gold. A guard house lies just inside the wall at this point. The man who is in it is a barbarian mercenary.

Just some re-posted reminders, so you don't have to fish through old threads:

Vagrant, your source in Tallon mentioned that there was a collector in Adala who is paying top dollar for collectible relics. He assured you that the movie posters were a good choice, since most collectors collect art.
The collector's name is Merchant Throne. You have never met him (though you were briefly in Adala before as indicated by your background.)

Vagrant, Jo responds to your requests about Throne with a bit of information. Throne is very rich and has a reputation for eccentricity. He has a compound of his own within the city but near the walls. He knows the man is difficult to see without an appointment and that he generally keeps night hours. He is apparently well-connected politically. It occurs to you that being presentable is probably important, and the baths sound like a good idea.

If possible, Nuyok will ask Jo if Throne is an Adept, but if not possible, Nuyok will be on the lookout for anything that would suggest that he is, or if any of his evident "servants" are.

Turning to Vagrant, Nuyok gestures toward the gate and says, "Well, this is your show."

Vagrant slowly takes in the walls and the giant metal gate. His eyes land on the barbarian mercenary and Vagrant slowly lets out a big sigh. He then glances at Nuyok and says, "Ok, let us go. I'm sure someone who could afford all this will be able to pay handsomely for these posters."

Under his breath he mumbles, "...or kill us for them just as easily."

Vagrant leads the group up to the mercenary and speaks slowly and distinctly through the bars, "Good day, I am here to see master Throne. I have some goods of a unique nature that I understand he may be interested in."

The barbarian guard at the gate looks over the party in a bored fashion. "Hrm. Lotta people wanna sell stuff to the boss. He ain't no master neither. He's a merchant." Though he does not say so, you can tell what he thinks of working for adepts.
"If you leave your name I'll see about lettin' him know you were here."
As you prepare arguments or bribes or think about leaving, a shout comes down from the wall, "Ho! Wait!"
Another guard, also a barbarian, but slightly more intelligent looking leaps down from the walkway behind the wall (Still inside the compound). He runs up to the gate and says, "Stand back, Brak. I'll handle this." He looks carefully at your party, particularly Vagrant, who spoke.
"I apologize for the rudeness of Brak." He glares at the warrior, who gives him back a venomous look but says nothing.
"I am Kar, in service of Throne. I will give your names to Merchant Throne. What are they and what sort of goods do you carry?"
I'll proceed with whatever names and goods you declare, but please post your response for the record, in case you are going under an alias or something.

He tells Brak to treat you with respect and runs off to the house, about forty yards distant across a large courtyard with an impressive fountain. A few minutes pass before he comes running back out, saying, "Merchant Throne says he is intrigued and wishes to see your goods."

You are escorted into the compound. There are gardens, statuary and fountains aplenty, and though there is still daylight left, you can see lumina lanterns on ornate posts. The only other people in evidence are a number of barbarian guards, and a few beast folk, three mice and a large heavyset dog.

Kar takes you to the front doors, which look to be heavy enough to stand awhile against a small battering ram. These he opens as he approaches and ushers you inside. He asks you to wait in an antechamber. It is finely furnished with furniture of a style unfamiliar to you, though strangely familiar to Vagrant. After a few minutes, Kar returns, saying, "Merchant Throne has just sat down for his evening meal and wishes you to partake with him." Kar's speech is decidedly eloquent for a barbarian.

You are ushered into a large dining hall. Musicians play softly from some hidden source. There is a long table at the head of which sits a hard-looking man. Not mean, but tough. His face is square and his bare arms show signs of combat scarring. He is in his fifties, perhaps, though in very good shape. He does not rise from his huge chair, but bids you to come to the table, where a meal of some large bird (goose or turkey) is sitting.

"Greetings," He begins in a deep bass rumble. It is a voice that would not be kind to music. He smiles. "Sit and eat and tell me your tale". He claps his hands once and immediately a serving girl appears from an alcove. She is barely clad and rather pretty. She pulls chairs for you and then prepares to pour wine.

Nuyok, many things in Thrones house are enhanced, including several walls and doors. This makes it difficult for your spirit sight to see clearly. However, you are positive that there are secret passages in some of the walls. You can see people walking behind them, but their nature is unclear.
In Throne's dining chamber, there is an alcove in a gallery above the main floor, with three musicians. There is a second upper alcove wherein four people sit, three male and one female. In both cases, they are separated from the main room by a curtain (and about ten feet of elevation).

I've spent nearly my whole life "studying" the events
of what the people of the time called the 20th
century. I can't say I'm a scholar or historian but I
have a lot of knowledge in that area. I specialize in
finding artifacts from those times as items to sell
off to make a living. It holds my interest and keeps
food in my belly. However, the time that I am
currently trying to better understand is that of the
Demon Kings. I find it much harder to dig up
information or artifacts from that time period. Have
you much knowledge in that area, Merchant Throne?

He looks intrigued. Throne claps his hands for the messenger girl and whispers something to her. She leaves and returns with a beautifully carved wooden box about three feet long, but not very broad or deep.
Throne takes it from her and places it on the table.
"This is a little treasure I've had for a number of years. I have several scraps of text on the device, or ones like it. No luck making it work, though. This is the restored original, but I have had craftsmen duplicate it with new materials. Still no results. I'd like to hear your opinion."

"I have manuals on the creation of these things, records of their properties and performance. I even have the formulas by which the powder was created. Let me demonstrate."
He claps his hands and the messenger girl returns to the chamber bearing a covered silver tray. She hands this to Throne, who sets it upon the table before the party and lifts the lid. There on the tray is a small heap of black granular powder. He calmly reaches for a candlestick, as if to shed a better light on the substance and leans it over the tray. By your estimation, it would injure if he set it off, but probably not kill, unless he has mixed shrapnel into the pile.

Ignition?

From Vagrant's unintenionally invisible thread:

"Yes, Merchant Throne I know what it is and I doubt you intend to ignite it. So, let's get down to the bottom of all this. What is it you want from me? I came here to sell you some beautiful posters but I am beginning to doubt that is what you are interested in."

Throne's face shows that this is exactly the reaction he had been hoping for. He sets the candlestick down near the powder, but remains leaning forward.
"You're right, of course. Although I might still be interested in your art. I am not entirely without esthetic sensibility. But I disagree about your assessment concerning guns. The evil lies in the purpose, not the weapon. A sword kills just as dead as a crossbow.
"As for the powder, I have the formula for it and several variations. My morphists have followed the instructions scrupulously and it is exactly, exactly identical to the remnants of powder found in preserved bullets. This pile is large enough to blow a hole in the table and possibly blind everyone if not kill."
Suddenly his hand shoots forward and knocks the candle over, directly onto the powder.

"And yet, it doesn't."

The candle wick hits the powder and the flame is snuffed. Throne finally leans back. "It should work. According to the text and relics left by the ancients it must work. But nothing. No one batch has ever done anything but act like a bucket of sand.
"But you, you my ragged friend have fired a working gun. Shells filled with powder ignited and sent bullets shooting from the muzzle. HOW?"

Vagrant's eyes linger on the failed power for just long enough to create another uncomfortable silence. Amost to himself Vagrant mumbles, "It doesn't work....a pity."

With obvious joy in his voice Vagrant looks at Throne and says, "It looks like The Demon Kings have swallowed the 20th century's weapondry after all. I'm afraid I can't help you even if I wanted to, Merchant Throne. Yes, I have experienced the weapons you study but I never manufactured any of their components. I am no inventor. I'm afraid I cannot help you this day."

Throne does not share your glee.
"I'm afraid I can't respect that answer, Vagrant. Perhaps it's true you never made the things, but you've made them work. Two ages ago, when they were as common as leaves in the jungle, you made them work on a daily basis. And you made them work after you woke up." He stands now, his voice forceful and strong. "You used them; you fired them; they killed things for you. The powder lit, and the bullets fired. How do you do it! HOW!"

He slams his fist upon the table. The two barbarians by the door are now tense and alert, but no one has yet drawn a weapon.

"That's better. I knew we could find a common ground. Please sit. I'll have the desert brought out." He whispers into the ear of the serving wench who promptly disappears through the portal the messenger girl has been using. He sits again, but the two barbarians at the door do not relax their postures of readiness.
"As for morality, weapons have none. The hand that wields them and the psyche that guides them are the makers of policy. A gun has no psyche, nor does a sword."
He leans forward, chatting as if the room had not almost been painted with blood moments before. "And here's the interesting part, Vagrant. You do have a psyche. And somewhere within the depths of the mists of your memory lie the answers I seek. You seek them too, don't you? At least you seek some answers, though our questions may differ."
He smiles. "You deal in information? Very well, here's the deal. You let me have my man peer into your spirit for the secrets of the gun, and I'll let him finish the job he started over a year ago."
He makes a peremptory gesture and from the service door walks an adept. He is lean and nearly hairless with deep-sunken eyes. His wiry frame suggests however that might be stronger than he looks. He is dressed in fine clothes and armed with a (sheathed) sword. His bored look of thin interest travels briefly over the party and finally rests on Vagrant. His voice dry, but bears the slight air of superiority a veteran academic might use on a roomful of dim freshmen, "We meet again, Officer Kramer."

Vagrant, the adept's face hits you like a shock. You remember your initial days of confusion and pain, when you first awoke and were taken to the Cities of men. This man helped you order your thoughts. You think you paid him in trinkets of the old world, but you are no longer sure. It was over a year ago and things were hazy coming out of the fog.
There are some things you do recall. It was in the city of Tallon. The rabbits who brought you in tried to take you to the Hall of Healing, but the huge monolithic building of the established powers made you nervous. What if they wanted to "study" you? You eventually found a seedy little back alley office of Psychistry. The magician/mind-reader person who looked into your head was named Pakkard. He was intrigued by your condition and agreed to look at you. Goods exchanged hands and Pakkard did indeed help you order your confusion, though the process was difficult and costly. Also, he always seemed a little creepy. Then one day, he disappeared. His shop had been broken into and everything smashed. It was the sort of neighborhood where "nobody sees nothin'" so your inquiries proved fruitless. Eventually you gave up and set about building up a life and a business.
Now, wearing much finer clothes and living in a different city, Pakkard stands before you again. His look of clinical boredom is unmistakable.

I am going with your last stated ID of Jonathan Kramer.

Nuyok, something about the man seems familiar. You believe you may have seen him before, but you can't remember where. The sword is a spirit weapon. His defenses are admirable, for his psyche is well-shielded.
This of course is the adept from the room above. The men who were with him and the messenger girl have all left the alcove. Only the adept has entered the dining room, but you believe the others are nearby on the other side of the service door.
Danger levels remain moderate...

"I guess the patient-doctor bond is gone from this world never to return. So how much did my thoughts buy you? Those fine clothes for sure."

With the name, you place the person. Pakkard was a Psychist with a decent enough practice in business, verifying contracts and such. He was "dis-barred" after it was revealed that he had committed some unethical acts. It was a brief scandal that ruined his career, but was not apparently interesting enough for your to recall the precise details. (i.e. they are unlikely to to enter into the current storyline)

I will even forgive you describing the art of psychistry as "Doctor"-ing. In like token, if you prefer the appellation of "Vagrant", I shall endeavor to address you accordingly."
He himself takes no chair but remains at a slight distance to from the table. The serving girl stands about midway between him and Throne.
Regardless of whether Vagrant sits, he continues. "I will concede that although the memory resonances in your psyche have a particular value, they are hardly the foundation for my present position.
"As for the indiscretion of communicating those resonances to Mister Throne, you should be grateful. The good merchant stands in a position to reward you handsomely for them. I will not totally vouchsafe, though I would be willing to predict that they would be sufficient to remove the unfortunate damage to your morphic properties.
