A map of the Throne Mansion.

Long before anyone gets to the door, the two barbarians are standing in front of it, axes quietly at the ready.
(They have been holding for this for some time).
Throne says, "Are you sure you don't want to re-think this? You obviously have some liking for the f-- fellow. Otherwise you wouldn't have bought him such a nice shirt.
"Of course, Adala does have a nice colony for such people. He could become a productive riven.
"In any case, there are members of the city guard waiting at my gate to take him away, if you really insist on leaving."

And Nuyok will prepare to Fast Draw his weapon if need be, as well as shift his powers to Spirit Sense (base) and Find Weakness (closest opponent, Pakkard(?) since Throne seems less dangerous).

Find Weakness, 11- when necessary.

Vagrant slows and glances around at Throne, "I think that you have completely unveiled your true colors now. Less of a merchant more of a bully and a thief. Be that as it may, you win. You can have what you think you so desparately need but let the others go. They have no bond to me other then wanting a little profit here today. I want them gone."

Vagrant looks over at the others with a snear and then back to the merchant, "What do you say Throne?"

"Jesus Christ, what does it take with the pair of you? The lot of you seem to have brought out some long buried morality that does nothing but stifle my chosen profession. I can't have this. Go! I want you gone. You can go away in disgust and tell the rest of your ragtag band that I have tossed you by the wayside for more profit just for me. Whatever you want, but go. Yeah, you tell them that I have cheated you out of your share and that I don't have the money to pay for the goods I have been given. You tell them that I left you high and dry right here. What are you and those fools going to do...come and get me? Riiiiight. You wouldn't dare! You tell them that I have screwed them over once again. When will they learn? Christ!"

Calming down, Vagrant turns to Throne, "Merchant Throne, get these bozos out of here so I don't have to feel guilty another minute for their well being and I'll cut the deal you want. Just get them out of my sight. I can't stand another moment of their puppy dog eyes and blazing morality. Traders like us can't succumb to it. I was just fooling myself. I promise you've seen the last of it."

After the others have left and the door has closed, Pakkard turns to Throne. "Vagrant has just given a very effective display, Merchant. By the way, the spirit cloak hides whatever he may be carrying, but I doubt it's a gun, he doesn't seem to be planning an attack, just making a show."

Throne leans forward and says, "Do you have a gun, Vagrant? I'd like to see it." Pakkard seems about to speak, but Throne silences him with a curt hand gesture. "Oh don't worry about warnings. Officer Kramer is an intelligent fellow, a soldier. He knows when to fight and when not to.
"Don't you?" As he utters these last two words, you suddenly become aware that the two 'serving girls' are very well-defined and have lost all pretense of innocent harmlessness. They flank Throne like expert bodyguards. Which they are.

"Now, it seems to me Pakkard, you need a quiet place to work. The second floor has some very secure rooms.
"Don't worry, Soldier. As long as you cooperate, there's a lot of advantages to be had. Any number of... comforts you may desire. It's only when people are pig-headed and violent that I lose my temper. Why don't you let Cassie and Pakkard show you to your new quarters?"

The "messenger girl" Cassie and the Psychist Pakkard lead you from the room. You walk through a number of short corridors, through a large ballroom and up a broad set of stairs. Occasionally you see servants (human).
Once upstairs you are shown to an interior room where you are asked to lie down and make yourself comfortable upon a low leather divan.
Pakkard is about to start working his talents, when Cassie interrupts, "He could be carrying something dangerous under all those rags. I wish to search him."
Pakkard replies, "Officer Kramer has no intentions of intiating violence. [Tell me if this is not true--Keith]
"I hardly think this necessary. His mind is enough of a labyrinth as it is. Oh, very well."
Cassie will make to rifle trhough your clothing. Do you ofer any resistance?

"Cassie" moves to open your robes. Your hands shoot out and knock hers away with the reflexes of a trained soldier. She frowns and suddenly ducks, coming up under your arms behind your left shoulder. Her arms snake around to attempt some kind of wrestling lock, but again, you twist and fend before she can grapple. You face each other warily, slowly circling.
Pakkard interrupts, "Please, please. This is all so tedious. Officer Kramer is at least smart enough to realize he is in a poor tactical position. It would be suicidal for him to attack."
Casie snarls, "Look closer! He has a crossbow at least under those robes. You can tell by the way they hang if you weren't so dependant on witch-sight." Her distaste for the adept is obvious.
She faces you with a formal martial pose. "You are a worthy opponent, Vagrant. Will you surrender your weapons to me without bloodshed? So long as my Lord Throne is willing, they will be returned to you."
She seems sincere, but Pakkard is of course rolling his eyes at the silliness of warrior-folk.

Cassie raises an eyebrow at some of Vagrant's "weapons", but receives them all and rolls them up in a bedcloth.
Pakkard looks annoyed. "If we are all through with the hair-pulling and shouting, can we get this over with? I've been in there before and this may take days." He glances sharply at Vagrant. "Especially if there is resistance."
He gestures at the couch. Assuming Vagrant complies, Pakkard will pull a chair up behind the divan and place his hands upon Vagrant's head. Again, he looks annoyed. "Officer Kramer, I know of your execrable vanity. You may leave your visage swathed in rags and bandages, but at least pull back the hood of the spirit cloak.
"That's better."

His thin fingers move carefully over Vagrant's head. The tips barely brush the surface as he dips his head in intense concentration.
What follows is without words, only feelings and concepts:

Think of yesterday. Now of the day before, and before that. Back back along an endless precession of years. Before the rags, before the city, before the sleep.
The long darkness. The long darkness. The long dark--"

Pakkard sighs. This will take a long time.

Unless you offer resistance, you will be here a long time. Others are aware of your plight, but they may not get here immediately. You can either take this as a time off, or better, retell your history. It has been a bit vague, but Pakkard is pulling out a lot of repressed stuff. If I can, I will work your tale into the current story.

Vagrant snaps awake to the blaring of a car horn. Reacting with his soldier-like instincts he dodges to his left barely being missed by a 2001 Honda Civic. Jerking his head about he takes in the familair settings of his real home...the streets of New York City. Daring to take a step forward, he moves to the safer confinds of the sidewalk. He notices that he is also dressed as a police officer complete with his old faithful police-issue firearm. He removes it briefly and handles it. His fingers move across the cold metal and feels the rough pattern that makes up the handle. Murmuring of a number of individuals watching his carressing of the weapon brings him back to some sense of reality and he holsters the magnum.

He begins to walk and take in the smells of the New York City life. Some are good, some bad, but each one is a memory, a familarality. He instinctively checks his watch to see that it is 9:37pm. This was during his regular shift. Suddenly, loudly, he hears, "All cars, all cars in the New York diamond district, we have a robbery in progress at the New York Diamond Exchange. Please respond...please respond."

Looking around, Vagrant tries to discover the source of this voice so close to him, It takes a second to realise that it is coming form the walkie-talkie speaker attached to his breast. Without missing another beat he picks up the handset and presses the gray button, "Dispatch, this is Car 5150, I am 3 blocks from the Exchange. I will be approaching...by foot. Out."

He takes two steps and feels the hard pull of someone grabbing his shoulder stopping him from making his way to the scene of the crime. He reals around to assault his captor. Using the energy from his turn he brings around a strong roundhouse blow. His eyes take in the dark figure behind him and chase up the thin frame to the face of Sal Forroca--his partner. He reigns in the punch just in time but not without need to continue the power of the punch elsewhere. This causes an old stumbling act to occur.

Sal says with a laugh, "Christ, James, what's gotten into you? Are you paranoid or drunk? If you are done with your soft shoe, there's something going down at the D.E. Let's go."

Vagrant fails in step behind Sal and the pair run off to the D.E.

Dreaming, Part II

Sal and James hoof it to the Diamond Exchange. They enter the lobby to see that glass has been blown out of two of the front windows and inside a guard lies on the red carpet seemingly unconscious or dead.

Instantly, Sal and James pull their weapons and begin to artfully search the establishment. The pair split up and move through each of the rooms full of endless cases of diamonds of all shapes and sizes--all untouched. They both arrive at a middle room from complete searches of the left and right "wings" of the store. Then a crash is heard and the sound of numerous objects scattering across the floor. Diamonds!

James, the senior officer, gives a slight head jerk and then the pair stealthily move into the back confines of the building. Sal backs up James giving an occasion look behind them to make sure they didn't miss anyone during their brisk search of the ajoining rooms.

James rounds a corner and spots light coming from a door ten paces down the corridor and off to the left. The hallway is clean so he moves out into the space to be met with two gunshots from the end of the passage. He flattens against the way and shifts back to the safety of the hallway leading up to this new danger zone.

James motions to Sal with two fingers pointed up, two down and then they take their spots. With precision the pair jut their firearms and enough of their heads into the opening from a high and low position. They spot their assailant and see he is joined by another from the lit doorway. The partners fire and Sal drops the man at the end of the hallway. James misses the man at the entranceway and the enemy returns fire forcing the pair back behind the wall.

Sal shouts to the perpetrators, "We've just put down one of your men and we called in backup long before we entered the building. The place will be swarming with cops in minutes. Toss out your gun and drop to the floor in the hallway and this will all be over."

Only silence comes to James' ears. He figures that this will only end up with more dead. He readies himself for the ordeal and with a nod to his partner they prepare for another jaunt out into the now deadly space. Just as they go they hear the clatter of a gun on the tiling that lines the corridor. The second enemy slowly emerges from the doorway and lies on the floor, fingers laced behind his head, "Don't shoot man, I'm just a stupid college student out for kicks. I don't want to die! Don't shoot me!"

Sal moves into the hallway and just as quickly James move in step with him. James hisses, "You secure that guy and his mouth. I'll go clear the room. Sal moves smoothly down the hall looking for more gunmen. He arrives at the prone man, kicks his gun away and kneels down to cuff the man. Once that is complete, James moves on past Sal and negotiates the open door. With his gun lowered and grasped in two hands at his front, he spins from the safety of the way to level his weapon at the center of the unknown room. The space ends up to be a small office with its desk and other furniture pushed out of the way--almost like a barricade. The centerpiece of the room is a large wall safe torn open by some powerful explosives. The open door is charred and bent from its ordeal.

James eyes immediately go to the danger in the room, lying near the bottom of the safe is another gunman Strun around him are hundreds of diamonds. He is clothed in the same black outfit as the other two but this one wears a dark sky mask. A gun is clasped in his hands pointed directly at James' heart. A slight shake is decernable as the hands hold
the deadly weapon, tipping off the man's fear to the veteran policeman.

Outside the dream, Vagrant jerks. Something in his dream, his nightmare, effects him violently. His eyes open briefly and he takes in his surroundings before closing them once again.

With a soothing and amazingly calm voice James speaks, "Sir, your buddies have all been out of commission and police will be here in
mass. You need to put down your weapon and surrender. I can't guarantee your safety unless you drop that weapon and get down on your chest."

For the first time, James sees the eyes of his adversary. Wet with tears they quiver and reveal with complete detail how panicked this obviously young criminal truly is.

Before James can speak again the gunman finally stammers out a reply, "You don't understand, you don't understand...I can't be caught here. I can't have anything to do with this. It'll ruin my life completely!"

James looks at the distraught figure before him and for a moment feels that pity he often feels when a person makes these mistakes and finally realizes--too late--what is will cost. The thought fades as he concentrates on the weapon still very capable of killing him.

"Son, you just have to drop the gun and we'll get you the help you need. There is nothing we can solve with these weapons that will make today get any better. Please, just drop the weapon to the floor and get your hands up behind your head. Once you do that I assure you you'll be safe and we'll get you help...from whomever you want."

The boy flinches at the cop's words, "Help, bullshit. Once your buddies come I'll be tossed in a cell and my arrest will be all over the papers. My father will disown me. Everything I have will be gone. You just don't understand. You can't understand. He pushed and pushed. I had to do something...bad...wrong...criminal. To show myself I won't be that cardboard man he wants me to be! He made me do this! Oh god, I can't let him find out. No. No. It's too much. No, no, no! It can't happen like this. I have to get out of here!"

In that instant the boy makes up his mind. He wants to run and the only way to do that is through James. He re aims the weapon and pulls at the trigger.

*Bang!*

The gun tumbles out of the boy's hand unfired. The boy slumps completely to the floor and remains unmoving. Smoke from James's firearm fills the air. Two seconds later Sal enters the room weapon waving about taking in the scene.

"It's over Sal. The boy is all out of action...for good."

James holsters his gun, but continues to stand looking at the boy. He knows he should call it in but he just stands there staring.

Sal glances at James and then puts a hand on his shoulder, "It's okay, Jim, I'll check him out. Maybe he'll pull through."

Sal makes his way over to the silent boy.

With a forlore exhale James, says, "No. No, he won't."

Sal kneels down to the boy who still wears his black sky mask. Blood now dots his lips. As delicately as he can, Sal pulls away the mask. As he does so, he lets out a long low groan.

Just as Sal speaks an odd distortion rips through the dreamworld. Vagrant convulses in unison with the violent disruption.

The dream continues as Sal looks up at James, "Oh man, you've killed--"

"Yoda!?", stammers Sal almost not believing his eyes!

It's true. The "camera" of the dream focuses on the mask as it is pulled away to reveal the face, well known to twentieth century movie-goers of every age--yoda. The creature turns its head like a vantrioquest's dummy would to stare into the "dream camera" and speaks, "Tricky, the mind is..hmmm? Difficult, it is to control. Too weak, perhaps you are. Yes, yes, harder, you must try to master it."

The scene goes black. Vagrant looks at the eyes of Pakkard, looking for some type of reaction, "Sorry. Sorry, that was quite odd, wasn't it? Old times are welling back into my nightmares. Everything is getting scrambled. I'll try to control it. I promise. Shall we try again?"

Nuyok and Rath, you are escorted quickly and quietly from the room. (You can one last verbal post to the old sub-thread, but I have moved Vagrant on.)
Once outside, the heavy doors close with a thump. The barbarian guards are met at the porch by Kar, the crafty guard from before. One of them speaks:
"Merchant Throne has convinced the ragged one to stay. These two are to be held in the basement until Throne is satisfied."
Anticipating your outburst, Kar says quickly, "Now don't make a fuss. We wouldn't want to have to call a city guard, would we-- Freak?" He speaks toward Rath primarily.

A couple of quick clarifications:
- How many barbarians/guards are present or immediately nearby (i.e., in the room or so we passed through)?
- Did we go back through the main room (with the pools) back out the front door to the porch (yet still within the gate), only then to be stopped and redirected to the basement?

Nuyok will give Rath a look, but the particular type will depend on the above...

You are in the open air at the front door, but still about thirty yards from the gate. This area is lightly gardened and ornamented. You can see the wall, but at this distance cannot clearly see beyond the gate. (Unless you are very obviously squinting).
There are three barbarians in arm's reach, the two who escorted you and Kar. You did not pass any guards to speak of on your way out of the building. There are a number of guards in the immediate vicinity (1-3 phases of non-com movement away). Again, without making a big show of counting, you estimate 3-5 additional guards might be able to enter into a combat.

Oh, and yes you went through the room with the pools. You might assume that htere is a separate entrance to the basement.

OOC: Excellent, I love it when a plan comes together ; )

While being led, Nuyok will maintain a casual demeanor, but will be observing the location of guards, especially a point in which there are fewer nearby, and if possible keep a spirit eye on Vagrant, due to his differing morphia. If the guard number reduces, e.g., away from front door and gate guards, Nuyok will switch over to Find Weakness on the most armored guard (if equal, then the closest, but preferring to be directed toward the leader).

The three barbarians have made no attempt to take your weapons as of yet, but you feel it can only be amatter of time. Kar gestures for all to start around to the back of the house.

Nuyok, Vagrant is not really visible; there are too many differeing morphias in the way (walls, plants, furniture, etc. If he were standing directly on the other side of the wall it would be easier.)

Kar seems to be getting you all out of sight of the front gate. As he walks, he catches the attention of the other visible barbarians and gestures for them to follow.

If you are going to try any combat, you will have to do so quickly; you will soon be outnumbered. If you feel the odds are too great, let me know and I will just move you into captivity.

Nuyok thinks hard...Vagrant wanted us to go, either to protect us, or because he had a plan...we're really not protected though, and may not be allowed out alive, and if locked up with weapons taken, we'll be even worse off and can't help Vagrant...if he has a plan, it may not even work, and if we're disarmed, we can't help...this looks like our last chance to make a stand, because there's no way Rath will let himself be disarmed, and by then, we'll be really outnumbered...only one option...

As noted before, Nuyok will Detect Weakness, on Kar ideally, make as if to follow, but then draw his blade and strike, hoping his enhanced speed and Rath's strength will be enough. Also, he will activate the Anticipate Movement and assign the CSL to OCV.

Several contingencies:
1. If the one Nuyok has Detected Weakness on is dropped, presumably they'll be another within striking distance, so Nuyok will switch it to the next target.
2. If either Nuyok or Rath are hurt more than half BODY, Nuyok will consider other options, and eyes the size and nature of the compound's wall (but won't run off from Rath, will give the word to flee).
3. If the first target is dropped, and seeing more attackers approaching, Nuyok will want to switch the +1 CSL from Anticipate Movement to DCV.

Combat Turn One

Without warning, Nuyok's blade flashes from its scabbard and bites into the nearest guard. Kar winces as the the sword leaves a gash in his upper arm.

Rath, ready on Nuyok's cue, sinks his axe into Kar's stomach. Kar doubles over, but his belt buckle has saved him from being disemboweled.

Kar, showing immense training and hardines,s swings his axe around to Nuyok, but he is obviously still acting out of shock and surprise and misses the adept.

Rath is missed by one of the guards, but hit by the second. For the first time in his life, he is on the receiving end of a Hill Tribe axe. Blood spills from his shoulder, but only seems to make him more enraged.

Nuyok impales Kar upon his sword point before the man can yell for help.

Rath's axe swing silences the man forever by severing his head from his neck. The grisly package spins away and lands in a nearby fountain with a splash, turning the water crimson.

"I always wanted to see the color of Adept blood!" snarls one of the guards. Nuyok wrenches his sword free just in time to avoid being hacked in two. The barbarian axe chops the cobblestones where he was standing.

The third guard is horrified by the site of his commander's beheading and takes a moment to recover, giving Rath time to swivel into a position of readiness.

Nuyok's sword flashes again and nicks the bicep of his opponent. "I don't know about mine, but yours is red."

Another flick of the sword has opened the man's forehead, releasing a blinding curtain of blood over his eyes.

Rath's axe gives no time for his opponent to recover and messily opens the guard's abdomen, spilling organs and blood upon the garden pave stones.

Nuyok's opponent flails blindly, his axe skipping off of a bronze statue

At this point, the friends become aware that at least two of the nearby guards have heard the mayhem and reached the fray.

They have obviously been watching the combat and judge Rath to be the greater threat.

The fourth guard hits Rath in the lower abdomen, ripping open his shirt so that his lower arms are plainly visible. It also leaves a painful rip in his flesh.

The sight of the reaving causes the fifth guard to hesitate, "By the gods, he is riven!".

Nuyok strikes the hesitant guard in the foerarm, leaving a long wound.

The guard retaliates but misses.

Rath also strikes at the hesitant guard and opens his ribcage. He crumples without a sound.

The second guard (the one Nuyok temporarily blinded) strikes at the adept and misses, "Aye, he's a riven monstrosity."

The fourth guard replies" disgusting!" and deals Rath a spinning blow to the head which rings his helmet loudly and topples the riven barbarian.

Groggily Rath falls to the ground. For a moment he looks out, but then he struggles to regain his feet.

Results of first wave: Three guards dead, one fresh, one wounded. Guard number two (the wounded one) is the only one left whom you have met previously. He was one of the two in the dining hall. Nuyok miraculously untouched, but Rath briefly knocked out. Rath has a number of wounds (he may be below half).
The guards and the combat have been making enough noise that it is a virtual certainty half the compound will soon be on to you. Plans and Tactics?

No idea on the number of guards. You have never been out of sight of at least 2 since getting here and the grounds are large.

There is a narrow walkway about 3 feet up on the wall's interior. The wall is only 7-8 feet in height, so that guards can look over/out but outsiders cannot see in. There are numerous steps to the ledge. The wall itself isasy to climb, but there are iron spikes set atop it that would require careful negotiation. (i.e. you would be 1/2 DCV and full phase in crossing them)

Nuyok slowly falls back, keeping pace with Rath.

Rath raises his wounded arm and brings his axe across the chest of the second guard. The blow lands and is instantly fatal.

The fresh guard, seeing his four dead companions, retreats and begins to shout "Alarm! Alarm! Foes!" Nuyok springs forward and slice open the man's arm. He howls in pain, but staggers away, clutching his limp limb.

You can plainly see three guards down the main garden path. It will be a couple of phases before they can engage. You have enough time to get into the house or go over the wall. Assuming you choose the house as previously indicated, the door is mercifully unlocked. It swings open to Nuyok's touch while Rath sets himself at the door. Inside the room is a swimming pool, complete with diving platform. It appears to be a private (yet opulent) bath. The door has a locking mechanism.

Immediate actions? (assuming you both don't choose to go over the wall instead.)

Nuyok sprints quietly across the tiled floor, his adept eyes looking beyond normal mortal sight. There is a vast confusion of walls and corridors between here and the dining room. Nevertheless, there is no one in this room. To be sure there is a person in what appears to be a changing room or steam room. As you watch, the person is getting up to open the door into the pool room, possibly curious about the noise. (I can't imagine entering the room under such circumstances to have been silent.)
In any case, the person is unarmed, and doubtless no match for Rath. Nuyok quickly moves into the corridor beyond and into the interior of the house.

Meanwhile, Rath has closed the door. There is a locking mechanism that is merely mechanical from inside; no key is needed. Also, flanking the door are two heavy planters. Grunting and straining, his four arms slick with blood, Rath shoves one across the door.

Nuyok has departed and as you turn to take in your surroundings, a female figure emerges from a small side room. She is unclear at first, obscured by a puff of steam. She is quickly revealed to be a young and attractive woman, probably having just enjoyed a sauna.
She is also stark naked.
She takes one look at your bloody, torn four-armed visage and begins screaming in terror. She is not even able to move, rooted to the spot.
This will bring unwanted attention for sure.

The door opens into the end of a long corridor with a polished marble floor. There are numerous doors along either side, as well as pieces of statuary. It seems likely the whole wing uses this hallway and that the best way to the dining room is down it.
As you get about halfway, you hear a woman scream from the room you just left.
You have no time to reflect upon this, for your sight has just told you that there are two armed men about to enter the hall from the far end (no door, just turning a corner).
You have time enough for one action before they come into sight.

OOC: Does this main hallway run all the way to the door Rath is at? I.e., when they turn the corner will they see him at the far end of the hallway? If so, presumably Nuyok could glance back and see Rath at the door when he moves into the doorway? Does it seem as if Rath had anything to do with the woman's scream, i.e., could she have come out the room and seen him, thus screamed?

Nuyok will observe the men as they pass by, ready to attack the second one from behind depending on the above.

Man: What!?

Woman: Killitkillitkillit! Blood everywhere. [sobbing and screaming]

Nuyok streaks up from behind and delivers a head blow to one of the guards.

Rath finishes him off with a blow to the vitals, staining the marble floor a gory red.

The other guard swings his axe at Rath, cutting deep into his shoulder. Rath is now covered with wounds and does not look healthy by any definition. His face is pale.

Nuyok swings his sword at the remaining axeman, who does his best to dodge it. the blow lands anyway, putting a ragged slice on the man's neck.

Rath swings his mighty axe (given to him by Mako of Fort Lizard) again, but the hill barbarian guard has better luck dodging this time.

The guard is plainly fighting defensively, no longer attacking.

Nuyok connects anyway, delivering a painful, though not deadly wound to the chest. The man staggers, wincing in pain.

He is stunned against two adversaries who will act before he does. You may kill him or knock him out with no problem)

Just as the two finish their grisly work, more footsteps are heard from the front of the house. Throne has arrived, with two guards in tow. One of them you recognize (by his wounds) as the guard who broke off to raise an alarm. Nuyok can tell that Throne has a spirit blade.

Rath is staggering, pale and weak. Nuyok still stands untouched (lucky b------).

Throne is looking mighty angry at the sight of two dead guards and one wounded. "You stinking filth! In MY house! No more mercy! Kill them!"

Nuyok went into town with the others the previous night. Without having me research, can you remember when and if Nuyok got a decent night's sleep?

If so, this is a minimal effort (remember this is Long Term Endurance to use). If not, you're going to be fairly tired after the attempt.

In any case, since you announced your intention and rolled the attempt, the healing happened. Unfortunately, even with the Comp roll, the attempt was unsuccessful. The usage does tell you that Rath is standing at 1 Body, though.

There is no effect from the healing; perhaps the conditions are too distracting.

Throne hangs back slightly, allowing the two guards to precede him.

Rath gives forth a hill tribe war cry and barrels his way past the two guards, delivering Throne a blow to the chest that must have broken ribs. Throne goes down to his knees, dropping his sword. He may have temporarily blacked out.

The two hill barbarians swivel and deliver a quick one-two to Rath, whose attention had been fixated on Throne. Rath drops as the blades cut him in each of his upper arms. Hee hits the ground with the sound of a mighty tree falling. His axe slides across the marble floor.

Nuyok begins to advance, but Throne recovers long enough to say, "Stop! There may yet be life in your friend. Surrender your arms and I'll let you tend him!" The two guards still flank him. Throne's chest is awash with blood.

The wounded guard who went for help says, "They drew blood first, constable! I saw it. The riven one slew Guard-Captain Kar."
Jonnit's eyes widen a bit as he takes in the scene. He looks at Nuyok. "Is that true?"

"Yes, it is true. However, it was an act of self-defense as Throne's men were holding our companion Vagrant against his will and were taking us to the basement to kill us."

says Jonnit, pointing his sword at you. "Kar owed me money."
"Stop," says Throne. "He's worth more alive than dead to me. Same with the freak. But I can't afford to lose anymore household staff, either.
"Nuyok. Your call. Live in a cell with what's left of your pet, or die here in this hallway." His face is deadly serious, a look that says drop it now or we finish this in blood. Jonnit is obviously Throne's man.

"Fine, have your men here help me carry Rath to these quarters you speak of."

Rath is insensible to the following events

Assuming no further resistance, his guards take your sword and pat you down for any other weapons. Unless you have made a good deal of effort to hide something or put up resistance, assume they have anything that would make a reasonable weapon.
The guards allow you to take Rath's feet, while each of them takes two of his arms. Their distaste is obvious, but they follow Throne's orders.
You are led through the house to a stairway leading both up and down. You presume you are somewhere near the kitchens, because you are led downward into what appears to be a larder/wine cellar. It is a large room with several "bays" for different categories. Throne obviously stores some merchandise here.
In one of the far bays, there is a thick grate in the floor. This is a pit. You and Rath are placed in it by means of a ladder. They almost dump Rath in, but the look from your face says to think again, and they help you place him gently down.
Afterwards, the ladder is drawn up and the grate replaced. There is no lock. The grate is heavy enough that it requires a man above with a stout lever to shift it. Nevertheless, the guards look at Rath's physique and obviously are concerned over your abilities and a heavy barrel is rolled on top.
The walls are set with smooth stone and is about a ten foot cube in volume. The grate is 5 foot by 5 foot. The cell itself is not inhumane. There is a cot and chair and you are allowed to retain your lumina.
Throne speaks from above. "I told you no lies Master Nuyok. If Vagrant's secrets are revealed to my satisfaction, you will be set free. As proof of my good intentions, I'm arranging for food and comforts."
One of the barbarian guards objects, "But Merchant! They have killed Kar, and many others. To treat them thus, to allow them to live is dishonorable."
Throne retorts, "Silence! I have my reasons. Come.

"Now."

There is some muttering but they follow. There is some hushed conversation at the edge of hearing you can barely discern:
I-iot! I nee-- th-- as bagnng chi--. Vagr-- coop-- mu-- be as---. Thr no go-- to me d---. La-- we-- s--

Some Spirit Observations

1. You believe Vagrant to be on the second floor. Although you did not see him, you believe you passed under a small lumina pendant while on the ground floor. This could belong to Pakker.

2. One of the bays contains boxes of high quality forged metal, possibly weapons and/or armor. It is behind too many interveneing substances to make out clearly now, but you know where to look, should the opportunity arrise.

3. A guard is dimly discernable at the foot of the stairs leading up to the ground floor. There are several feet of earth and rock above you and then the interior of the house. Anything passing directly overhead can be reasonably well seen, but spirit sight visibility fades rapidly after that. You can no longer see the lumina pendant, for example. Of course, sound would never carry through the basement ceiling.

4. There are several similar pits down here and you think one is occupied. One of the pits has no bottom you can clearly discern. There is water at the bottom, but it looks pretty wide for a well.

First, Nuyok will bind Rath's wounds, whether with materials supplied by Throne, or with Nuyok's shirt (not going to try to bother tearing up Rath's shirt by hand since it is spirit-enhanced, and further, perhaps it could be repaired).

Paramedic, 13-
3d6: 6, 3, 1 (STUN: 10, BODY: 3) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)
PS: Healer, 14-
3d6: 2, 6, 4 (STUN: 12, BODY: 4) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)

Then, Nuyok will quickly search the cell for anything beyond the cot and chair, that might be used as a weapon (beyond a chair leg) or help in an escape.

PER, 13-
3d6: 4, 4, 4 (STUN: 12, BODY: 3) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)

Nuyok will also guesstimate whether he could call out to whichever other pit occupant is there without nearby guards' notice (seems unlikely?).

Next, Nuyok will try to heal Rath, taking an hour to do so, and if possible, will push his Healing power given Rath's high BODY (not sure how you'd want to handle that - but presumably more than 1D6 (5pts) would lower the PS: Healer roll be 1 more?).

For push, if can:
EGO, 13-
3d6: 1, 5, 2 (STUN: 8, BODY: 2) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)
PS: Healer, 14- [-4 for 8D6, +3 for time, thus 13- or 12- with good push]
3d6: 5, 5, 4 (STUN: 14, BODY: 3) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)
Complementary: Paramedic, 13-
3d6: 4, 3, 1 (STUN: 8, BODY: 2) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)
Healing, 8D6 + whatever if good push (feel free to roll)
8d6: 1, 6, 4, 6, 5, 3, 3, 3 (STUN: 31, BODY: 9) Mon September 1, 2003 @1:34 PM (EDT)

Hope this works...

OOC: BTW, how do you run complementary skills? I don't recall how they are in the Hero book off-hand (get a bonus by however much the roll is made?), but the book isn't so much relevant as such to how you do it ; ) Probably would affect certain Healing decisions...

You get a plus one bonus to your roll for every two you make the roll by. So yes, you made the healing roll because of the comp skill.

1. The shirt can be repaired, though much of it will be lost. (ie. it can be made smaller.)

2. The cot and chair are heavy and bolted to the floor.

3. Impossible to tell if a call to the other prisoner could be overheard without trying. The other pit is very close and the guard is across the room...

Nuyok works with every ounce of skill he can muster. Unfortunately, his morphia is a mess. The adept healer can see where previous healings and morphic alterations are all coming undone. It's like trying to hold a sand castle together while the tide does its relentless work.
In the end, he can see it is hopeless. Rath will not live. The mighty heart has been pierced by wounds too great to mend.
At the end of an hour of feverish work, Nuyok lays back weary and worn. Rath groans feebly before the breath leaves his body. Nuyok has heard of this. Sometimes a dying person will rally the last of their strength, as if unwilling to leave this world on Death's harsh terms.

Nuyok quietly observes Rath's passing, and a range of thoughts pass through his mind... should he have attacked in the first place... retreated over the wall earlier... Rath should not have died this way... there'll be hell to pay for this... how the hell to get out of here now...

Nuyok carefully covers Rath's still form, and rests for a while, after all this exertion, contemplating options for an hour or so, unless interrupted. If not, he'll whisper to the other occupant, louder until heard (and listen to see if the guard seems to hear him), saying "Hey there, who are you? Any way out of here? What's going on?" Alternatively, if the guard seems to hear Nuyok call out, he will instead call out louder to the guard, saying excitedly, "guard, my friend's dying, help!"

I'm assuming that the other occupant in my other character, would I hear the whisper before the guards and answer?

Also are we anywhere near where Lousiana would have been? Every time I think about what Rath would say it always comes out in my head with a Cajun accent, which would explain the difference in dialog (if you've ever been to La you know how hard it is to understand them. The are the only southerners that can talk faster than a New Yorker)

Accent
"Hihowyalldoin'?"
That seems to be the traditional LA greeting from my experience this summer. Feel free to give Lekchok whatever accent you want. The current time frame is far enough removed from modern times that even the language has changed. I have used any number of non-period and non-geographically correct accents to differentiate people.
As a funny aside, the original area for the campaign was to be the ruins of Natchez. Then my friend convinced me to go ahead and tip the earth sideways for a less-familiar map. You are actually on what was the northern coast of Canada, west of Hudson Bay.

Whispers:
Yes, you are the other character. If the guard hears the whisper, he does not react. Feel free to respond.

Assuming the guard didn't hear and Nuyok's on his initial plan (figure Keith will pipe up as needed), Nuyok says "Rath, he didn't make it, what are you doing here? Know any way out?"

Nuyok checks out how well he can reach up through the grate while standing on furniture, and tries to gauge how close the other pit is with Rath, so that if Nuyok were able to lure the guard over and trip him properly, if Rath would be able to grab the guard's neck and/or keys.

"I'm still workin' on dat. Da gate's not locked just gotta move dat barrel 'n I'm outta 'ere. Din't tink I'd make it pass da guards dough so din't try yet."

Rath will try to climb the wall (Clinging) to the grating holding on with is feet if need be (Extra Limbs), to first try and tip the barrel or just try to push the gate open.

Rath, were it not for your unique abilities, you would never be able to get the leverage needed. Straining mightily, you manage to tip the barrel over. It falls over on its side with a heavy thud and rolls off of the grate. In the distance, you hear the guard call out, "What's going on over there?"

Whoah woah, slow down there. The barrel rolled over. The grate is till so heavy that it needs a man with extremely good leverage to shift. Here is an image of the cell in cross-section. Nuyok's is virtually identical.

Cell Diagram

You could move the barrel by hanging to the grate. You cannot move the grate because there is nothing to push against.

I know by a strict ruling on clinging it is possible, but we are using clinging to model an extremely adept climbing ability, not Spider-man. Even though you can grip tiny cracks in the ceiling, the leverage is just not there to push up a great that probably requires a 20 STR to lift in the first place.

OOC: Nice pit diagram!

Noticing the guard has heard, Nuyok will stand on the stool, and wait for the guard to come near (does the guard have to pass Nuyok's grate to get to Lekchok's?) - if he does, and if the grate has wide enough gaps, Nuyok will attempt to leap up and grab the gate (if necessary), reach an arm through and trip up the guard, if he could do so and the guard would fall in reach of Lekchok's pit possibly.

As Rath's breath gets shallower, he miraculously opens his eyes, a testiment to his strength, keeping himself alive by force of will alone. His voice is low, but barely shows his weakness, "Nuyok you have to make sure Vagrant is okay. Take care of Beka for me, she gets herself into trouble a lot, and without my good looks to keep her out of trouble who knows what will happen to her," Rath starts to laugh at his own joke but starts to cough and blood trickles out of the corner of his mouth. "Tell Cas I will miss her stories. Celeste, is a good friend you can trust her. Faliol is going to get in trouble if he keeps chasing girls. Handle fought bravely against those killer plants. Ricco has a good heart. Vagran...*cough* Vagrant has been through a lot, he's seen a lot of pain, help him Nuyok... No regrets..."
