As you take the afternoon meal, two days later, you receive a prestigious visitor. The door opens and Orlando and his counterpart enter. They are followed by the High Justice himself.
"Please remain seated," he says, and takes the vacant chair at the far end of the table. Orlando and friend flank him. There is none of Orlando's humor now. He is on duty.
Rakeen however, looks calm and approachable. He does not eat, but gestures for you to continue.
"I am here to say that you are all free to leave. You may be pleased to know that Throne has been sentenced to death. He will be hanged upon the Great Tree at the main crossroads at dawn."
"He was hiring a local spirit weaponsmith to make those axes you encountered. He sold them to the hill tribes. In return, they would be far more effective in preying upon caravans. All caravans but his, that is. He was actually having his psychist transfer ley lies to sighted barbarians. This is of course treason. You are welcome to attend the hanging should you so choose."

"You keep us here, hostage, while we have no idea what is happening with our friends and then you tell us Throne is to be hanged like we're supposed to be happy about that? Adala has sunk low in its view of the Word and the Way! We never did anything wrong and yet you held us prisoner. Where is Celeste? I want her back now so we can leave and go back to the wilds where law and order reign!"
.oO(Maybe not smart talking to a Grandmaster this way... Oh well, no sense stopping now!)
And while we're at it, where is Peaches? Are you going to tell us the full story or not. Why are you here anyway? Why a Grandmaster and not a stone thrower? Where are our firends?"

Orlando steps forward, ready to deliver one of those little corrective love taps. His face is twisted with anger. A gesture from the Grandmaster stops him.
"Wait. Forgive the child her outburst. It is true that they have been kept here, but not needlessly."
Orlando resumes his post, but now his demeanor is frankly suspicious and hostile, a great deal of it directe at Beka.
"You all wanted to see Throne punished for his crimes. It was necessary to keep you here until that investigation was finished. You may all know your intentions to be honorable, but your identities and involvement were unknown to us. As strangers it would be easy for you to flee and leave us with unanswered questions. We have concluded our investigation and you are free to go. We are convinced of your innocence and indeed of your help in this matter.
"Throne believed one of your party to hold secrets of lost technology. Such things are of no interest to us. We do not wish to probe Vagrant. Some of you are guilty of petty crimes elsewhere. Some of you are accused of high crimes... elsewhere. Again, not our concern. Our concern is the City of Adala.
"Which brings us to the topic which is so loud in your psyches, you might as well be screaming it. By the way, it would be pleasant if thre were no more histrionics; it upsets my entourage."
He sighs. "You all met Celeste a few weeks ago, perhaps a month. None of you knew her before then. She was a pirate, one of the Raiders of the Red Tide. I doubt any of you has ever encountered one before. The word 'bloodthirsty' is quite accurate. 'Blood - thirsty.' She willingly sailed upon ships that slaughtered innocent sailors, fishermen, even merchants like yourselves. If she were allowed to walk away from those crimes, how could I explain that to the widowed spouses, the orphaned children whose lives have been ruined by these acts of barbarism?
"These things are true. I have seen them in her mind, as has the Maritime Quarterjudge. The normal punishment for such activity is death."

Beka stands up and shouts... "What? She is no pirate! She has been a caravan guard, a really good one at that,!!! And..."
Realization sinks in... "For a few weeks."
She sits down. "Red Tide has been bothering Adala? For years I expect. She being Red Tide probably was involved."
She sighs.
"But, these crimes are in the past. She has forsaken Red Tide and done a seervice for Adala by bringing down Throne. Is there any way we can let the two cancell eachother out and take her away? We would not bring her back to this city and I'm sure you know that she has renounced Red Tide, Grandmaster."
Beka sits forlornly at the table. "I've lost too many friends on this trip already... "Where IS Peaches?"

"Allow me to be frank here for I seem to speak no other way but such," Cas says. "Why do we judge based on who once was associated with? I can understand not wanting to let someone who has harmed the city that we are in go. But beyond once being member of such a group, has she herself committed a crime against this city?"

Cas looks a bit upset, "Look, beyond Nuyok here and you, I have never had a positive experience with Masters. I had one stab me through with a sword once because I was there. I had committed no crime and done no wrong. I do not hate Masters although I am now nervous around them. Has Celeste actually killed an Adala Citizen or is it her connection to those who have that makes her a criminal? I do not wish to remember her as a criminal for what time I have left to remember."

Orlando glances at his master for permission to respond.
"If you would wish to protect 'Miss Beka', O fox, then your best plan would be to remind her of her position and to whom she speaks.
"Yes, your pirate friend did fight to bring down Throne, but she was inspired by personal vengeance, not out of any thought for Adala. Remember that she failed."
His face hardens. "And she would be dead. And this discussion would not be taking place. If. It. Were. Not. For. My. Master.
"Do you think that every traveller gets the benefits of the Ward of Chthon? The expense of the healing is probably greater than the profi--"

"Enough, Orlando," quietly commands the Grandmaster. "Perhaps it was a mistake. Do you still wish your boon?"

Orlando looks at his master, and then at the assemblage. "I am uncertain. They are brave, to be sure. But bravery alone, without respect and due humility is mere insolence."

This is an odd exchange. Those who make a conversation roll can read the following text. Those who fail, do your best to ignore it:

Those of you who are more deeply entrenched in Merikian society need to understand your position better. You are the equivalent of medieval yeomen and traders* speaking to a Duke who has the power of life and death over your friend. Your whole society is steeped in a concept of position, much like medieval and renaissance societies. You are certainly capable of speaking out and getting angry, but you will need to make an Ego roll to speak in anything other than respectful tones. People don't speak to nobility that way. Not if they want any consideration.

*Nuyok would be the equivalent of a knight's bastard son. He has the lineage, but not a title.

Cas does her best not to yell, not, mind you, at the Grandmaster and the Paladin, but at those who cannot remain cool. She gathers herself again.

"If I may, and I doubt I may for I am a beast and we are not liked in this city. I have lost Rath and I cannot have him back. I cannot remember when or how I met him now. I had friends before I met the people here. I can remember one and a bit of another who is in Adala. You see all in the room that I know and care for minus one."

"I mean no disrespect to my friends and to you. But Celeste is the closest I have had to family. I think of her as a sister. I do not like Barbarians much, and in fact, hate them with a passion that would be hard to understand. Barbarians like to take the people I care about away from me."

Cas hopes at this point that she is at least getting the attention she needs. "I do not ask you to give my sister back to me. But I want you to make sure, that if she must be taken away from me, that she has in fact committed crimes against this city. I know that of all in this room, I have the least power to get her back. So I do not ask for you to give her back. I ask you to assure me that you do this because of her crimes, not because of who she once was."

"If you can do that," Cas says trying to make a respectful bow, tears flowing from her eyes. "I will do my best to let it happen. For anything else that I could try and do would only take one more from our midsts."

She faced an army of Riven and Reavers first to gain the release of poor Rath and later to free the fort. She fought many Hill Tribe barbarians to gain the release of Vagrant. Does any of this sound like the actions of a bloodthirsty pirate? All that we have seen of Celeste indicates that she has a noble spirit and selfless loyalty."

"I did not realize you were making an overture. Your syntax is strange and it is difficult to pick out intent among all your anger. In what way do you think you should be 'rewarded?
"And can you say it in a civil manner?'"

What if I were to deliver to you the Chieftain of the Red Tide? His life is mine to claim by right. Would that be restitution enough? You could put him to work in the tin mines or hang him, it matters not to me." She pauses for a moment, thinking and then continues, "In fact, he might be lured here easily enough. My thought was essentially since Celeste is 'hunted' be her father
(unknown actually to her, since she thinks he assumes she died when the
Sea Dog was destroyed) would be that he could be lured to Adala if
sufficient rumors (truths actually) were planted that she is alive and
well in Adala. He would come seeking revenge (and his sword, and
possibly the maps she stole, but the maps are up there where her
husbands people are) and essentially a very nice little trap could be
set since he may or may not know the ways of the flatlanders., That is
what she is offering, anyway. It is, of course, entirely up to you.
That is the only alternative that I could come up with besides
volunteering to compete in the games, and those are a long way off
anyway.... I am open to any suggestions if this is not a suitable line
of approach at this time. I am guessing that there is much going on in
this thread since there are numerous posts invisible to me....maybe I've...er...she has already been tried and hanged.....gaak!

The Quarterjudge listens while you tell of your thoughts, but ultimately shakes his head. "I'm sorry, you have no idea if this person is still alive, and it seems doubtful that you are enough bait to draw such a person all the way into the stronghold of an enemy. It was a good try, but I am afraid my judgement stands." So saying, he stands himself and leaves the room.
Later, a group of four guards enters your room. They tell the attendant, "We're here for the prisoner." They look at you. "What, four of us for her? What makes her so tough?"

OOC: Sorry, Barbara, given your uncertainty over your father's fate, combined with all of the difficulties such a plan would entail, I decided the quarterjudge would not go for it. Fear not, however. There's help out there somewhere. Look at what you guys did for Vagrant...

Celeste, you are roused and fitted with shackles. The guards march you from the infirmary directly to a black, covered coach. You are secured inside, your shackles attached to the frame of the wagon. At no time do you have an opportunity to break away.
The wagon begins to move slowly, drawn by horses. It is not a spirit vehicle. You cannot see outside, since the windows are shuttered and your hands are not free. You hear the coach clatter across cobbles and gradually descend a hill. After a short time, the coach comes to a stop. You hear a muffled discussion from outside.
Voice 1: "What's the hold-up? We have a deadline to meet."
Voice 2: "Sorry, we've got orders. We're here to take control of the prisoner."
Voice 3: "The D-K's you are! We got orders from Quarterjudge Nivell to get this here pirate femm to the mines. No stops. So push off!"
Voice 4: "I think this will change your mind. And your tone."

There is a brief pause during which you can hear only the shuffling of papers.
Voice 1: "Well, why didn't you reaving say so in the first place?"
Voice 4: "Didn't get a chance to get word in. Pal."
Voice 3: "OK, no need to get uppity about it. Take the damn cart. You won't always be riding so high. Throne's got friends..."
Voice 2: "Ours are better. So why don't you push off and watch the hanging?"

There is some grumbling, but you can feel people getting on and off the wagon.

Does Celeste recognize voices 2 and 4? Does it sound like Jornu or Melkut, or any of the caravan members????

From mines to hanging....great, just great....doesn't exactly sound like 2 and 4 are friendlies, but it also sounds like Throne is still in the picture.

Examining the inside of the cart, and observing where the shackles attach to the framework, Celeste decides they must do this type of thing alot in Adala (taking prisoners to the mines, that is) Adala is not a nice town. Leaning over, Celeste attempts to peek through a portion of the shutter to see if she can determine anything at all about what is going on outside.

They could be Melkut and Jornu. It's hard to tell through the walls of the carriage and all the shuffling going on around there.
The carriage rolls on for a while, but the best you can see out of the windows is that you pass an occasionally light source, perhaps a street lamp.
You hear the sounds of the coach going through a narrow street, the hooves and metal-shod wheels ringing and grinding on the cobbles. Suddenly, a new voice rings out, "font size ="1">Death from above! Filthy blackguards, take that!"
This is followed by lots of shouting and activity. It sounds like someone is walking or fighting on top of the coach.

Having listened to the voices, Celeste is not sure that Jornu or even Melkut would abduct her from a sentence of serving at the mines only to take her to a hanging.....unless of course, the Quarterjudge was in Thrones pay.....or the new 'guards' are in cahoots with him....it's very confusing....Sent to the mines....no, wait! sent to the hanging....no, no.....wait......rescued by a chinchilla......
As the image of Peaches swinging by rope to the top of the coach, sword in hand, passes through Celestes mind, she cannot help but laugh a bit at the thought of the guards surprise at the sheer audacity of Peaches actions. She shouts through the carriagetop, "Get'em Peaches!!!"

A few moments later and the cart has resumed its journey. As you pass down an ill-illuminated stretch of road, Peaches slips in past the shuttered windows.
She sits on the bench opposite you (The interior is laid out like a stage coach). Her little sword is bent and half-sheathed, since it will no longer fit the scabbard. She glances at it, following your gaze. "Yeah, well you should see the other fella! Hey, you don't look so bad for someone who was, well... dead."

Orlando seems a bit mollified by the turn of the room's attitude. Fortunately, Rakeen seems oblivious to it. He nods to the Grandmaster who addresses the room again.
"Well, to answer a few of your questions. No, your testimony will not be needed. We have a pretty clear picture of what you have been through since leaving Tallon. Including certain events in the Wilds which might cause you difficulties in the home city of Fort Lizard's former Master, but are of little consequence to you in Adala.
However, though they are of little consequence to you, there are some here who appreciate the lack of a growing riven army on our doorstep."
He seems to enjoy talking around the subject rather than laying it out straight.
"Now law and justice demand the punishment of Celeste. It is within my purview to pardon her, but such things are not done lightly. She is no mere pirate, but the daughter of a particularly... persistent one. This city would never forgive one who pardoned her, should the truth become known."
Though he is talking about Celeste's punishment, he seems to have a light-hearted air.
"It is possible however to reduce her sentence to five years labor in the tin mines."
There is a brief uproar here as various party members either protest or plead, but they are silenced by Orlando and his taciturn friend.
"I am sorry, but there is little more I can do for you." He stands and gestures for the paladins to follow him from the room.
"Celeste will be removed from this city by covered coach at midnight and taken to the mines where she will likely perish in servitude."
He pauses at the door and gives a meaningful look. "The coach will be taking the Mingatok Road. At midnight. With no escort. She will not return to the city. I hope you understand."

And then they leave.

Before leaving the Throne Mansion, you are all advised not to take anything with you that doesn't belong to you. An adept from the Justice's Entourage will be on hand to verify that the things you take out are the things you take in.
Some specifics:
An explanation is needed for Rath's ax, but it is eventually located and returned (to Beka).
The guards who let Cas carve up Throne's wood stores are berated for allowing the vixen to do so, but they consider the punishment far lighter than having to endure the fox's... boredom(!) she is allowed to leave with the pieces given to her, but will not be allowed further raiding.
In general, the bulk of Throne's goods have been seized by the state, and the State does not look kindly on looters, however justified they might feel.
Anyone who wishes to try to slip something past the inspector may try, just describe your procedure.

Once out on the street, you have only a couple hours of daylight remaining (you were taking the afternoon meal.)

Beka, you may search for a sword during this time, but Spirit Armor is never produced on speculation and is always custom made. To find a sword during this time is difficult, since there is no such thing as a city directory. Roll a Trading roll and you may use a Streetwise helper roll.

Riccoco, this would have been the night you were going to try your walkabout. Fortunately, you have been released before the attempt. You will have time to make your contact before sundown.

OOC: Have I missed anyone's plans?

You find a adept swordsmith before the shops begin to close. His name is Fandrel and he seems fairly upset about something. He keeps asking you who you are and why you want such an item.
Finally, through some adroit conversation, you learn that one of the city's most prominent spirit weaponsmiths was charged in the Throne case. The adept is at large and no on e wants to be in any way associated with him, lest justice run its wheels over them.
Eventually, he shows you the only item he has available, every other such creation having been commissioned privately. "You see," he says, "this one was made but never claimed. The big fellow that ordered it died before he could make the payment. Pity that. It probably would have saved his life.
"It's a real beaut, though. 14 emeralds on that hilt, and the blade rings like a bell." He demonstrates.
"It's a bit larger than normal, so I could let it go for say twenty-eight hundred*. Either in ingots or a local letter of credit."

*silver dollars, or 280 gold

Congrats, you made the -5 penalty to find a spirit weapon.
Rolling randomly for the type of blade brings up a Bastard Sword. It is of very fine quality of course. Since these are always specialty items, its suitability for you is (on the infamous 1-6, 1=uncomfortable, 6=perfect scale) "1".
Unfortunately it was made for a much larger hand and would cause blisters and poor handling over long term usage.
These are non-game mechanic effects, though, so it's up to you.
Sorry, but it's the best you could do under such short notice.

Handle scouts and reports that the Mingatok road is much smaller and leads toward the fabled Wicked City. It is reportedly used for a few nearby things (outer farms, mines, prison, garbage, etc.) but no merchants actually travel it. The road itself is unmaintained after a few miles. Few who go to Mingatok ever return. There are plenty of good spots for ambushes if necessary, but you will need to decide whether you will attempt to meet Celeste inside the outer fence or beyond in the jungle.
Inside, you will need to get her out of the Lizard road gate. Oustide, you will need to get back to the Lizard road through presumably un-trailed jungle.

You ask after Cassie, but none of the prisoners seems to answer to her description. You eventually surmise from speaking to the others that Cassie ran off after Orlando got there, but before the Grandmaster's entourage arrived. She wasn't armed, so no one in the party that came with Orlando (Faliol, Riccoco or Handle) knew to stop her.

"Thank you for the information Handle. Does anyone know anything else about Mingatok Road, Mingatok, the Wicked City, or the jungle along the road outside the gate? Lekchock, know anything about that section of jungle? It seems the caravan itself, with restocked trading goods to return to Tallon if possible, should be assembled and taken in the direction toward Tallon, while a group goes to recover Celeste. It seems the caravan group should include Jareek and Kent, among a few others. As for recovering Celeste, outside the gate means less likelihood of pursuit, but a harder path to rejoin the caravan, and inside means the converse. I would rather take an increased risk with the recovery and pursuit to avoid extensive and difficult travel through the jungle. Thoughts?"

The way I am understanding it:

Nuyok wants to rescue Celeste inside the Migatok gate and smuggle her out the Lizard gate.

Leckchock wants to rescue her outside the gate and rejoin the Lizard Road by trekking through the jungle.

Riccoco wants to leave through the Lizard gate and trek through the jungle to the Mingatok road (outside the Mingatok gate), then take her back trhough the jungle to the Lizard road.

Only the last plan is unworkable (you don't have the time to blaze a path through miles of jungle before midnight.)
What's the plan, folks?

Faliol paces back and forth, deep in thought.

"We must NOT kill the guards, yet we must delay their reporting Celeste's abduction...err, freeing. Maybe some money to grease their pink little hands? I mean, they can't be paid that much. Since the Grand Master said that Celeste will probably die in the mines, who will know she didn't arrive? We can put some of Rath's money to freeing Big Sister. He would approve of that expenditure, I am sure."

"I agree with Lekchock, approach them outside the walls. Smuggling a wanted criminal through the gates is asking for a spot next to Throne on the hanging tree..."

"Fine, we take her outside the gate, and my suggestion is to take plenty of rope with which to bind the guards. We need to take them by surprise, and let them know we are serious about taking her, but also that we will not simply slit their throats. Do we have an estimate on the guard count? Is the trip to the mines far and is it fraught with danger? That information may affect our approach. For instance, if it is simply a locked wagon with bars around the prisoners, note there may be more than one, Handle might be able to approach it by stealth and free Celeste, perhaps if the others set up a distraction. Thoughts?"

It's probably HIS guards. They probably know we're coming. We need to get her outside the gates and go through the jungle to get back to the road. I'm sure this won't be a surprise. We just need to be sure that no one from the city sees us.

By the way Lekchock, are you going to guard my caravan?

"If you have me, I got nothin' else goin' for me and nowhere else to go.

OOC: As for the plan, Lekchock doesn't realize how hard it will be for everyone else to get thorough the jungle. His people move through it like regular people move along the road, so he doesn't take this into account when coming up with plans

Cas is watching the discussion with great amusement. She has already finished Celeste's friendship knot and is working on Faliol's by this point. Pretty soon though she is going to be back to driving again. Every now and then she lets out a vocal snicker.

"The guards may be his, or they may not be, better to be safe than sorry. We can see what their reactions are when we show up, and if they seem to relax, so be it. We could even have one person, perhaps myself, "meet" them on the path ahead of the party, and engage them in conversation to see if they are as you expect. If so, then it will be easy, if not, then we go with a surprise strike afterward. I would engage them in conversation such as to not create suspicion of a later assault, just to see if they are "in" on the deal."

"Didn't the Grand Master say she was leaving by covered coach with no escourt? That means that there shouldn't be other prisoners nor likly guards. jsut the drivers. We should be able to leave the city by any gate other than that leading to Mingotok, circle around to the road outside of view of the city and then stop the coach and retrieve her. I would guess the Driver is already in on it or at least will give us no trouble. If the Grand Mwater wants some deniability, he isn't going to send her with his own men though, cause then the word would come back that he let her escape or his men were beaten and she was taken, niehter would help him any. Them's my thoughts on it."

Jareek shakes his head, "I know ye be a city feller, Handle, but I would have thought your time on the Lizard Road would convince you there's no way we could circle around outside the picket and get there in time. There's no path through that jungle. If ye meant inside the picket, but outside the city then we'd still have to get her past the Lizard Road gate.
"I like the current plan. It has less risk, since the lass is outside the picket and out of Adala, yet gives us a final stab at some profit."
Cripes! The boss is coming!
