Leaving Adala

The plan calls for you to re-unite with the rescue party on the Lizard Road, outside the outer gate.

Cas and Handle have carefully packed Beka's cart and hitched up the oxen, who have enjoyed their week's rest in the Adalan Greens. Cas' wood supply is fairly small and takes up only a tiny amount of the wagon's bed. Handle is travelling from the city empty-handed.

Kent has done well for himself on the last day. He has also indulged in some horse-trading and now has a much better specimen to pull his cart. Jareek has helped him pack his return goods which seem to be equally comprised of spirits and a small eclectic collection of artwork and craftwork.

As the wagons begin to rumble and rattle away from the shacks, you realize this may be your last chance to indulge in anything civilized until Fort Lizard. Any last minute changes or purchases of trade goods or equipment?

Also, Beka. Did you have an answer on the return deal with your employees, or did I miss it?

Finally, Faliol and Riccoco. Where are you meeting the party, inside the picket or outside, and are you bringing your new acquaintance along or meeting him beyond the outer gate? He has no preference.
Also, I assume you are all sleeping at the shacks. Are you going to tell the others the nature of your companion then or wait until morning? I believe they already know you are travelling with someone.

Serious question

At some point Kent draws you aside. "Faliol," he begins, "You have been of unquestioned value upon the road. I don't think we could have gotten here in one piece were it not for you. I also realized by the first day out from Tallon that you were nursing along Jareek, who is good enough in a crisis and willing to work, but no tracker or guide. However, there have been long periods in Adala where I have seen precious little of you. I know you are involved in bringing a new traveller into the caravan through some deal with Riccoco. I do not mind you seeking your own fortune, but I must know. Ultimately, whom do you serve, Riccoco or me?"

Faliol looks at his feet, thoroughly ashamed. "Mr. Kent, you have been extremely patient with me and for that, I thank you. I have neglected my duties here of late as events rained down upon me like a springtime jungle thunderstorm. To answer your question, I serve you, Mr. Kent. You are my employer. Ban...Ricco is my best friend, and I have been assisting him out of friendship. I have been trying to keep the faith between all four of you. Miss Beka, being caravan leader, being the third person I obey. Pops, being my foster father, and he whom I owe my very life, rounds out that long list. It hasn't been easy."

Looking up at Kent, and finally meeting him in the eye, "Out of loyalty to Pops, I lied to you about his ability. My plan was to work twice as hard to compensate, but events conspired against me. You have every right to fire me from your service, as I haven't kept the faith with you. But please understand, the intent was never to defraud you. I am cursed with having too many obligations. I cannot say for sure what I will do in every situation whereby a possible conflict should arise between my four obigations, but the simple fact that I lied to you to help my sire should tell you that I choose family over the job."

With a heavy sigh, "Sir, danger follows this caravan like a pack of pick pockets follows a wealthy man. Maybe you should use this opportunity to seek your fortune elsewhere. We have gotten lucky so far. That kind of luck never holds for long. You do NOT want to be there when we run out of luck."

"I am truly sorry to have let you down, Mr. Kent."

OOC This would be a prime opportunity to rid the game of this NPC, if you so choose. I guess that I am telegraphing that it is ok with me if Kent fires Faliol. It is deserved and frankly, I saw it coming way back. The fox kit can set something up with Ricco or Miss Beka as a second choice.

OOC: Drawing aside the veil

OOC: Actually, Kent (and to a large extent Jareek) serve a valuable GM function. In a gaming sense, they are the horse holders. If you guys go into the depths of the dungeons, they do all the boring necessary tasks like watering the horses, arranging for accomodations, getting supplies, etc. These are not the activities of larger-than-life heroes, so unless someone particularly wants to be the one who guards the caravan goods while the others go fight battles and infiltrate strongholds, they are free to pursue more exciting game activities.
Both NPCs also serve a metagame function as GM voices. Kent is the GM voice for the city-dweller perspective, giving you culture hints, likely prices, how city folk are likely to view your actions, and such. Jareek is the voice for Beasts, letting you see how non-super-independant folk like the caravan heroes view their place in the world. He's much more conservative with his place in the world, and serves as a foil for those who are more progressive and atypical, as PC beasts should be.
I have been considering adding a more combat oriented NPC, so that the GM can have a voice during more dangerous situations. These little guides are really helpful in giving guidance when players seem stymied or overwhelmed by options.

Long story short: you still have a job. : )

Kent appears to consider your answer. "Very well, you have answered honestly. That goes a long way towards re-building my confidence. I know you are loyal to the caravn as a whole, and that also helps. I ask only that while you are in my service, you check with me before you pursue any side activities. Is that acceptible?"

Ears perked up, "I am not fired? I just knew I was fired..."

Shrugging, "Notify you in advance of future side deals? That is more than fair. Ok if I continue to help with Ricco's current business venture? Now that we are about to hit the trail, he shouldn't add too many distractions till we reach our destination. I promised to help him with this load and I would like to keep my word to him. I will remind him that you as my employer, have first priority on my services and any help he receives from me must first meet with your approval. You should know that once we reach our destination, he will need me to accompany him to the sale. He is dealing with some rough people that might knock him over the head if not backed up by his friend. I see no reason why that meeting cannot take place after your business is settled or at a moment that does not inconvenience you, Mr. Kent."

Breathing a sigh of relief, "I feel SO much better. It gnawed at me. How I treated you. I appreciate you letting me make amends."

Kent stops you before you can leave. "Before you go off, I need to settle accounts. I told you in Tallon that I would probably not be able to match guild rate. I also promised you a bonus if the trading was good. We've left a little sooner than I would have liked, but the selling went well enough."
He pulls out a purse. In it is eighty dollars in silver and gold coins. (40s, 4g)
"It comes out to near guild rate plus a little extra, if you count yourself and Jareek as one scout. I'm sorry I can't match Beka's generous offer. Divide it between you and your sire as you wish."
A quick mental calculation shows you that you were on the road for about 8 days travel time, plus maybe two days worth of helping out. (A lot of your adventure has been of the non-paying kind, resting and fighting at Fort Lizard, enforced waiting at Throne's, etc.) At guild rate of 5s/day for a scout your pay should have been $50 each. Considering Jareek did almost no scouting, his pay could be considered generous.

Since the GM forgot to take care of this in a timely manner, you can assume that you got the money just in time to make any last minute purchases before you leave civilization.

I believe it was split eight ways, among the surviving PCs. I'll check with Susan.
Thus, none for Jareek, Kent or Peaches. None of them fought in the final battle, though. Of all the NPCs, perhaps only Peaches was close to Rath. She claims to have killed a giant to save his life, back in the jungle near Fort Lizard.

After speaking with Kent, Faliol heads over to Riccoco. He pulls the plucky coon off to one side for a private chat.

Looking down at his feet, with his tail drooping, Faliol begins, "Ricco, Kent just dressed me down about all the extra running around I have been doing on your behalf. I have been expecting this for some time and it finally happened. Luckily for me he is a really understanding employer. Anyone else would have fired me. To keep our jobs (Jareek and Faliol), I had to promise to check with him before helping you further. He gave me permission to assist with this load and help you sell it in Tallon."

Looking at his best friend with more hope in his eyes, "I think I can keep the faith with all four of you now. Before, to help one of you sometimes meant neglecting the others. That has been bothering me. But now that it is out in the open, I feel better. I know you dislike the pinks, but Mr. Kent was more accommodating than most beasts would have been in a similar situation."

Assuming Leckchock and Vagrant reveal themselves, I will advance the time to the shed mentioned by the city guards. It is made of solid stone with a heavy timber roof. Inside are various lockers of equipment, mostly ropes, chains, boards, shovels, that sort of thing. There are no knives or hacking instruments, though. There is a caretaker, but neither Melkut nor Jornu seems to worry about him ratting on anyone. In fact, he seems an unimaginative sort who takes their request to stay until light at face value.
There is a cleared area with several stools and boxes where you can discuss or ask any final questions before retiring.

Leckchock is definitely not an off-the-rack human. His feet are oddly-shaped for one thing. You have seen good evidence that they are prehensile. Also he moves through trees and climbs in a way that no human could. The spirit differences are slight enough that most adepts wouldn't give him a second glance.

After some reflection, you do remember hearing folk tales of the Tree-folk of the forest. Apparently, they are a mutant kinship a little farther from Tallon than the Night Folk or the Devil Merks.

All spend as restful a night as could be expected at the shack. In the morning, about an hour before dawn, Melkut and Jornu bid farewell.
"We have to get back to the city now," says Melkut.
"Yes," rejoins Jornu, "We don't want to miss the hanging."
Melkut gives a humorless chuckle. "Well, if you're set on going through the jungle, it should be safe enough. The outscouts have reported nothing in the way of chimera incursion for some time. And you have a master to help with any possible reavers.
"Should you get into any trouble, there's a Sanctuary about halfway. The walls are reaver-proof of course. I don't remember the name of the abbot, but it serves the couple small communities out there. Those are mostly farms and homesteads that for one reason or another aren't in the greens. Some folks have buried pasts, others have... social problems. Just be on your guard and you should get through without a problem."
He leads you a short distance from the shack. The sky is just starting to brighten. Here's a trail head. The place is a maze of pathways, but you've got a forest man with you."
He turns to Leckchock. "Tales say you folk are more at home in the trees than in the open fields and you can climb like other folk walk on level ground. Is that true?"

Before Jornu and Melkut leave Celeste approaches them, "Thank you for helping. You risked your lives when you did not have to do so. If ever our paths should cross again, I will call you friend. Good Journey." She smiles as she turns away from the coach and back to the members of the caravan.

"Master Nuyok, it is good to be out of that place and I am grateful to everyone for their assistance...but I am not taking one step away from here until someone answers my question....Where is Beka, where are the others? What in the name of the Gods of the Deep happened while I was locked up?" She firmly plants her feet and crosses her arms in front of her, waiting for an answer to her question.

"Do not worry, we are heading to meet them now. While you were held, most of the rest who were not in need of healing were held at Throne's as part of the investigation. Myself and Lekchock were seriously wounded, and taken elsewhere for healing and recovery, then taken to Throne's. I was informed that you were a pirate in your past, going against Adala, actually," Nuyok watches for Celeste's reaction, and continues, "I had tried to get access to you, but was denied, so we had to simmer until the investigation was over. At that point, we got a surprising visit from the Grandmaster himself, and his paladin, who said you could not be released given your crimes, but intimated you could be released by outlining where and when you would be en route out of the city. And here we are. Any other questions, pirate wench?," Nuyok finishes with a smirk.

Riccoco, you will have to resolve your supplies situation with Beka within that sub-thread. I am advancing the current action to the leaving time.
The wagon and cart are packed. Supplies are laid in and all folks are healed and clean. A light drizzle ran all day yesterday and seems to want to continue through today. The light is dull and gray. As you approach the picket gate, there is a small knot of people there. There is a large covered wagon and a much smaller cart and pony. The cart is a short ways off from the main group.
Beside the cart stands a HUGE bear. He is dressed in a stylish oilcloak, with what appears to be gold embroidery. He wears a deep crimson sash and though lightly armored, all the pieces match and appear to be correctly sized for his massive girth. He is leaning on a long double-bladed axe, and taking a nip from a small metal flask. He does take notice of you, but makes no greeting.

Riccoco hops out of the wagon driven by Handle motioning for Faliol to tag along. Drops of muddy water splashes away, dripping from the side of the wagon and the oilskin Ricco wears. He trundles forward, the mist rain adding to the drips already tracking down his cloak.

He eventually reaches Angilak, offering a quick wave of one leathery-padded paw. "Greetin's, Mr. Bear. You be ready for the trip?"

The huge bear looks the party over carefully, as if measuring them against some unseen yardstick.
Finally, he hefts his axe onto the small cart he stands beside, and performs a flourished bow. It is dramatic, since he is perhaps eight feet in height. He removes the broad brimmed hat he wears (apparently his cloak has no hood, but a stylishly cut color, also trimmed in a wide brocade). He stands back up. "Greetings and forthright felicitations upon this momentous conjoining of paths. May our dealings together be sufficiently harmonious as to enable a smooth and unconflicted passage through wilds and woods to our eventual destination of Merikia's Jewel.
"Honored companions of Red and Bandit, know that I am called Angilak, a puissantly-skilled bear of great and mighty frame, and while not afflicted with false modesty am at least honest in the appraisal of my own faults and virtues.
"By your richly varied garb and bearing, as well as the cosmopolitan blending of flesh and fur, I see you to be individuals of distinction and discernment."

Angilak stares a moment, then turns to Faliol and Riccoco. "You did not mention that your companions, though illustrious fighters, crafty and dauntless, lacked thebarest rudiments of elementary social interaction." He sounds less amused now.
"If we are to travel together, we may need to depend upon one another. If, for instance, there was an unhappy occasion whereupon we travellers were beset by chimerical foes and a set of jaws wider than the civic gates of Adala were about to separate your head from your body, in what manner could I convey a warning to the appropriate individual in time to prevent such an unfortunate event? In more prosaic terms, do any of you wish to be adressed by any other name than 'Hey, You?' "

Stepping forward, "Angilak, forgive them. It has been a stressful time for all involved. This is Mr. Kent, my employer and travelling merchant. May I present Jareek, a Kent guide and my foster sire. The quiet fellow is Handle, a Hamilton guard and novice driver. The vixen is Cas, a Hamilton driver/guard of the big wagon. Last, but certainly not least, is the generous, yet direct leader of our merry caravan, Miss Beka Hamilton, merchant of Tallon."

"Did I forget anyone?"

Kent speaks up, "Actually, there are four more who will join us on the road. With any luck..."
Angilak nods to each in turn, almost formally as introductions are made.
"Well met, I suppose. That begs the question now as to whether we shall be joining them." His big hand gestures towards the knot of other people standing a short distance off. It is obvious they are also travellers and about to depart as well.
"They began gathering a scant hour's time ago. Merchants, travellers and clergy by the look of them. It is my apprehension that they are not your erstwhile companions. Know you any by name or reputation?"
None of the assemblage is familiar at this distance, but you notice that some of them are likewise looking back at you.

Looking at the other group, the following is immediately observable:
There is at least one merchant (judging by the dress)
There is a priest. The City folk will be able to more accurately judge him to be a clergyman, a Brother.
There are at least five armed and armored folk. They may be non-aligned travellers, or they may be scouts/guides. It is highly likely that the majority of them are guards. It is impossible to tell if any more are in the wagon.
One of the armed folk is a beast, specifically, a porcupine. He looks like a rough customer, and some of his quills are actually shod with metal.
Finally, there is a wagon. This is larger than Beka's flatbed wagon. It has solid sides and a roof, similar to a "gypsy wagon."
As you all watch, the Mrchant-type gestures top one of the armed folk (human) to follow, and approaches you.
"Hail, the caravan. I take it you are travelling abroad this morning?"

OOC: Tallon is the only place this road leads... Yes, that is the plan.

"A little of everything, actually. Spirits, spices, art, relics, even some poetry. Diversify. That's the secret to steady returns. None of this hish risk, high return speculation for me!"
He advances and holds out a hand, "My name's Bergen, Merchant Bergen. Some of that lot over there is mine, as is the wagon. The spiny fella's our scout, Dashel. Brother Cadbury, Wickersticks and Arkis are traveling on their own. Say, if your lot is moving out now too, do you want to share the road? Safety in numbers and all that, eh?"

Sorry folks, for some reason, this post got visibility-limited to Beka. It should have been visible to all.

"I understand that you might wish to have your full complement before you travel. But if there is no particulary need for a private rendezvous, let us at least travel to that point. If your companions are not yet ready, we can part company there if need be. It make sense for us to walk and ride together. That way, neither of us is exposing ourselves to danger in diminished number. 'A danger shared is a danger halved' as we say."
He winks. "Besides, whoever goes first is the first one to meet a chimera or bandits, and I'd rather wait than blaze another's trail."

I go back to the group. "Any problem joining caravans? I told him we are picking up the rest of our party outside the picket. I don't remember anything about being secret when we join up, do you?"

If there are no dissenters, I go back and propose we join!
