Lekchock, you are brought awake by a small stone hitting you in the side. From your cradling tree branch, you can see Nuyok below. He has a small handful of pebbles and one of them has just woken you. The camp is quiet and it is still the dead of night.

"Psst, Leckhock, come down here," Nuyok hisses. Assuming he does, Nuyok follows up "I saw a figure in the distance, across the pond," Nuyok gestures, "who traveled through the thick jungle as if it were an open field. I only saw him briefly, and then he was gone. I believe you can make it over there to check it out. It may be connected to the footprint Faliol saw the other night. I do not believe there is any danger, but we should check it out."

Nuyok will also get Drummel's attention, and let him know what's going on.

OOC: No intention of stepping on role-playing toes, but I want to keep this thread moving for the sake of the uninvolved.Nuyok indicates that he could not tell for sure. He says that it was lightly armored with leather, which could be true of Lekchock's people. Lekchock circumnavigates the pond, which takes him about ten minutes. It is thickly jungled, but that is no impediment to the forest man.

Tracking 12-

STUN: 18 BODY: 6
OUCH! sorry. Didn't Rath have a similar problem? Honestly, I won't penalize you for the fumble. It's DARK out there.

Lekchock, you see absolutely no sign that anything has ever passed this way.

I'm not doing this on purpose! John must pay a monthly fee to Dan to hink up the die roller.

Nuyok, Lekchock appears to be totally alone out there as far as humanoids go. You see him quite clearly. However, just as he is rounding the last bend and heading back to camp, you are suddenly aware that an act of violence has just occured somewhere beyond the animal pen.

Specific PER roll:

Whirling about, you catch the barest impression of multiple humans interacting in that direction. Just like that, they are gone. But you feel certain that someone was attacked.

The camp is roused to Nuyok's cry of, "We're under attack!" There is a brief flurry of activity as eople roll out of blankets or trees or holes or wherever they sleep. Nuyok is standing looking in the general direction of the animal pens, while Lekchock comes trotting up towards him, occasionally swinging from a handy tree limb. It is still pitch dark; the only light comes from the tiny campfire and an occasional faint patch of nearly invisible moonlight. The jungle beyond the rock quickly fades into impenetrability. People are shouting or whispering all at once. Some folks are struggling to find weapons or armor, others are just looking around dazed and confused.

I have rolled PER rolls for all. Everyone rolled less than 11 with the exception of Faliol. Faliol, if you want to role play your confusion or sleepiness a little longer, that's fine.

Faliol is nice and comfy in his blanket, dreaming of chasing a flock of chickens with a veritable pack of exquisitely tailed, nubile vixens. The chickens squak in their terror as vulpine females race hither and yon around trees and over the hills. These chickens are fast and the vixens even faster, yet our kit is faced with a dilemma...follow his hunger and chase the nice plump chicken or surrender to his passion and catch that attractive vixen with black-furred highlights adorning her tail.

Indecisive AGONY!

Then a solution manifests! Wait till she catches the chicken, then pounce on the two of them!

The kit smiles and resumes the chase...

Handle, sometime in the middle of the second watch, you were awakened by a call of nature. You looked about and saw Will Wickersticks standing nearby. Sensing your need, he said there is a spot the others have used back towards the road on the other side of the little stream. It's not far off and Dremmel was guarding that direction. You even gave him a little wave before you hopped over the stepping stones.
You are not on the other side for more than a few minutes, when a wave of nausea and pain overtakes you. With sick certainty, you recognize the sensation. You remember feeling just this way when Master Ash attacked you with his adept powers. Wordlessly, you sink to the ground, feeling like death.

* * *

You awaken some time later in another part of the jungle. It is still night. You are trussed up and hanging from your feet by a rope tied to a tree limb. Your weapons and armor have been removed very thoroughly. There are five hooded figures surrounding you. One of them looks at you and says, "Scream if you wish. No one can hear or help you."

Kevin, if you want to role-play this, that's cool. If you'd prefer to just drop your character, I'll invent the events. Your call.
I have left the other thread visible to you, so they are not immediately aware who is missing, but you are not there.

"Dumb" is throwing on a leather jerkin, calling, "Drummel? Drummel!"

Looking about, Angilak has gathered his axe and is snarling, his nose taking the air.

Will has suddenly materialized from the background foliage in his uncanny way, his face as diffcult to read as ever.

Arkis is crouched low, his eyes wide and darting all about.

Brother Cadbury seems to be calmly observing both parties, perhaps counting.

Dashel is knocking on the door of Bergen's gypsy wagon, from which a sleepy-looking Bergen subsequently emerges.

Jareek is snoring lightly. Kent is waking both foxes.

Umbra is grabbing a brand from the fire, which gives a weak and flickering light. She is working her way toward the animal pen.

Peaches has poked her head from Beka's pouch and looking very annoyed.

Some of the folks head out toward the animal pen, while others position themselves or take a head count.

The animals are a little disturbed, but no more than would be expected from all the sleeping people suddenly getting up and making a ruckus. There is no sign of infiltration or violence in that direction. Umbra is the only one who has a light among the searchers, and her firebrand is a dim glow at least. Searching beyond the pen yields similar disappointing results.

Those who dig in with bows or ready themselves with hand weapons find no targets. The only sound beyond your own is the interminable insect hum of the jungle. No movement shows itself, not even to the adepts.

Those taking a head count quickly realize that there are two people missing: Drummel and Handle. (Now that this is discovered, I will remove him from visibility.): evilgm :

After a few moments, you gather to compare notes and form a plan of action. Will Wickersticks is particularly helpful at this point. The animate reports: "It was about the time that the good Master here [indicating Nuyok] was awakening the forest man. Handle got up, presumably to take care of the needs of a human body. He went off in that general direction [pointing back towards the main road]. I saw him wave to Mister Drummel before disappearing into the bushes. I became interested in what Lekchock was doing and so turned my attention away for a few minutes. The next thing I know, Master Nuyok is yelling something about being under attack."

Konnur becomes agitated at this. "Drummel is not here! He's missing! Drummel? Drummel?" It is only the collective will and strength of the party that keeps the big man from plunging into the benighted jungle alone to seek his brother.

Bergen asks, "Let's just keep our heads. Any suggestions as to how to proceed?"

"Aye, that's true enough," says Jareek. "Ol' Ricco here can flip a coin in the dark and tell whether it's Archon or Eagle. 'Course, good luck on gettin' your coin back." He chuckles to show it was a joke, but the chuckle falls flat as the others express worried faces over their missing comrades.

Ricco skulks off into the darkness. Brother Cadbury admonishes, "All adepts look sharp! Don't let him pass from sight." Even Arkis looks, though he has yet to really come out and reveal his nature to the group at large follows the 'coon with his senses.

Riccoco goes out into the darkness. The general area to start is not difficult to find. It is the area designated by the group as a latrine. Using his night eyes and his tracking, bolstered by weeks of practice with Faliol, he examines the scene.
Tracking 13-
5, 2, 1 STUN: 8 BODY: 2
OK, stop looking at me Lekchock! I don't control the dice.

Sure enough, he finds Handle's tracks, leading toward a convenient boulder. Shortly before they reach it, there is a shallow depression, as of a body. Perhaps he fell? There is no sign of violence, but there is one significant feature. There are four footprints he can find that don't seem to match any of the group. They are mocassined feet and the are nearly invisible, indicating someone who knows how to move undetected. However, there are two fairly deep ones next to the body impression, as if the person suddenly got heavier. When he points them out to Lekchock or Faliol, they can confirm that the prints are similar to ones they have seen. The direction of any of the prints is impossible to determine, given the number of criss-crossing tracks. (It was a good meal and everyone had lots to drink.) : )
Please note, this will take some time for Riccoco to puzzle out, since he will need to look at everyone's footwear or paws to tell which ones are foreign. The rest of you have time to discuss things or take other actions while he does this.

"From what I can tell, these people can move through the jungle as is it were not even there, so there is no way we can keep up or catch up with them unless of course they want us to. Further, they may have been trailing us for some time, given Faliol's spotting of the track earlier. They may have captured one or both of our fellow travelers, though if I know Handle, he is trailing them rather than captured, but who knows. Regardless, I say we have our best trackers do their best to follow the trail for a bit, and see what we find. I will accompany them, and would also like a few others to accompany myself and a tracker or two, including Konnur, Lekchock, Will, and perhaps another. The rest should remain and secure the area, and this should include at least one sighted. Also, for those of you who have made this trek repeatedly, have you heard of such folk as this?"

After all in both parties have been consulted, no one knows of folk who move through the forest so easily other than the near-fabled forest folk of Lekchock's tribes. However, Lekchock assures you that the tracks are not those of his kin. Their feet are shaped differently from human feet.
Grabbing lanterns, brands and searching with these or spirit sight, you all manage to do a pretty thorough sweep of the immediate area.
General success roll for the party:
2, 1, 3 STUN: 6 BODY: 2
Not Bad!
l
This takes some time to complete ,you are now half on til morning, about three hours. Although you have not found either Handle or Drummel, the following facts are arrived at:

There are at least three separate mocassin wearers, possibly more. They are definitely the same as the prints at the Sanctuary.
They are excellent at forest craft.
They seem to suffer no significant movement problems from darkness or jungle.
Drummel was dragged for some distance before he was picked up by two people. He was much heavier than Handle. The fact that one person carried Handle and two Drummel is what led you to your conclusion of their minimum number.
There is no blood at the site of either attack.
Although you rapidly lose their trail in the boggy, water-drowned jungle, it is possible they took the two party members North (the direction you are heading).

Going about the tracking and the subsequent sharing of information, Riccoco mutters, "We all shoulda been knowin'..." He pauses, reflecting on his own thoughts. In a tight-pawed grip he grimaces and growls, "Why these folken be havin' the need for narrowin' down our people?" He looks around at the torch-lit faces around him as if they could answer.

Eventually, when no one does, he kicks out with one foot, spraying fetid water about in a glittering array. "There be no trackin' 'em through that! What to be doin', then?"

Nuyok will gather all from each group, and say "Between their ability to move and our inability to track them, we would seem to be at a loss of how to find our missing companions. What also does not make sense is that these tracks seem to be the same as those who slew the sanctuary occupants outside Adala. Perhaps they are searching for something, could not find it earlier, and think we have it, so they captured some of our people to see what we might have, I do not know. However, I suspect if they went to the trouble of capturing our companions, they are looking for something and will be back. Therefore, I say we continue on, especially since they seem to be going in our direction, and be prepared to set up a trap for them when they return. Those of you most familiar with the jungle, such as Lekchock, and those of us who are sighted, should best be able to spring whatever trap we devise. Any thoughts on the plan to continue on, and to try to trap them?"

Nuyok will approach Beka, and in turn the others, and say "Given that Brother Cadbury was the only one who had a connection with the sanctuary occupants, which were attacked by the same jungle people, perhaps he knows more than he is saying. Keep an eye on him, but be subtle."

Konnur looks shaken, "I-- I don't, I mean, he's never travelled with us before. I've heard of him though. He's legitimately who he says he is. I guess.
"Ah, Stones take it! We've got to find my brother. He's just a kid!" He paces and glares to the East, as if pulling the sun up with will power alone.

Ricco's ears perk suddenly at Nuyok's hushed conversation. He turns slightly, eyes wide as he stares across the rocky expanse, looking for Brother Cadbury. He hunches forward, slinking behind Celeste, his exaggeratedly widened eyes peeking from between Celeste's legs, staring all the while at his quarry.

He mutters, teeth gritted, "Ol' Riccoco be havin' his eye on the spot. Hooman Priestly types... Nothin' but trouble, the lot o' 'em."

When the opportunity presents itself, Nuyok will approach Celeste away from the others and say "While Brother Cadbury is an obvious connection, I doubt he is in league with anyone, though he may be oblivious to something he knows or possesses. Separate from him, however, is Arkis, who wears a spirit-enhanced cloak that I cannot pierce with my sight, so anything more you find out about him, the better."

Celeste indicates she will keep an eye on the MCF. Before Nuyok moves on to the others, she puts her hand on his shoulder, looking him in they eyes she asks, "They left the priest and his wife's bodies, why would they take Handle or Drummell? Perhaps they are still alive then?" The look in her eyes says she is truly concerned for the young thief.

Bergen speaks up, "It's a sound plan. In any case, we can try and find our people by proceeding in that direction. I suggest no one is ever alone, though. For any reason.
Although it's too early to leave, I doubt any of us can sleep. We might as well start breaking camp so we can get a move on at the first glimmer."

He looks darkly at Nuyok, but for now does as instructed. To challenge the adept without either sleep or support from the others is folly.

Standing next to Ricco, Faliol quietly complains, "Faliol, wake up! Faliol, go back to sleep! Shesh, I wish they would make up their minds!"

Catching Big Sister's eye, Faliol ambles over, but not before grabbing Ricco by the arm to have the 'coon join in...

Whispering for just the three of them to hear, "I don't like leaving Handle like this. He might be a little odd, even for a p...human, but heck, he is one of us! I feel we should do....more...to find him. Nuyok seems to have forgotten what it is like to be captured and to await rescue by your friends."

"Problem be... There bein' no way to be trackin' the lot. The Master Adept be right. Ol' Riccoco was out there... Tryin' to track 'em. he not be much o' a tracker, but he be havin' the eye for it." Ricco shrugs helplessly. "We move slow an' be keepin' an eye out. If nothin' be the better o' it. We come back an' be lookin' for 'em with Betsy ready." He winks and breaks into his knowing grin.

Celeste listens as Faliol explains his concerns. 'Little Brother, we are looking for Handle, and when we find him, we will rescue him just as we rescued Cas and Nuyok, and as you and the others did for me. But, we cannot go faster than his abductors, we have the wagons and more people. These people, these 'yaraza', if that is what they are called, have taken Handle and Drummel alive. They had to do so for a reason, else they would have left them for dead as they left the priest and his wife." Celeste looks at Ricco and then at Faliol before continuing. "But if they have harmed him in any way, they will pay. Of that you can be certain."
