Map of Fort Lizard
Home - Spirits - World - Tallon - Culture - Devotions - Who's Who
Bestiary - Glossary - Campaign Guidelines - Appendix - The Bank

The last thread was getting insanely long. There's no break here, just a continuation. As it stands:
Vagrant - Contemplating leaving the room
Lekchock - Talking to a parrot
Faliol - Trying to convince Nuyok of Vagrant's sincerity
Riccoco - General carousing
Celeste - Left the room
Cas - Talking to Will Wickersticks
Beka - Almost talking to Vance (The guy this thread was supposed to be about : ) )
Nuyok - Primarily talking to Faliol, but watching the room

Just a recap/scorecard:

The common room is crowded. Not only are the members of Hamilton, Kent, Riccoco, and Bergen there, there are quite a few new faces. Beyond the four tables normally used in the common room, the staff has added four more tables, leaving the room between fairly cozy.

In attendance:

Vagrant, Lekchock, Faliol, Riccoco, Cas, Beka, Nuyok
Kent, Peaches, Jareek, Angilak
Bergen, Umbra, Konnur, Dashel
Cadbury, Wickersticks

Vance
Three large Doberman dogs;
A human guide/scout

Two trader/merchant types in Tallonite garb;
Five guard/guide types apparently attached to them

Two otters, one old, one young; not military;
A Bulldog
A lean, weathered-looking adept, in sailor gear;
A youngish woman with black hair tied in pirate headband-fashion, also in sailor gear

Two officers of the Tallonite Navy, one has an large parrot.

This is about three dozen people. Cori and Jame are hopping, and apparently have temporary help: a girl and a boy that you have seen about the civilian areas of the fort. They are in their early-mid teens.

Although the outside tables are still there, they seem to have been appropriated by a navy crew, about a dozen sailors.

Last week, on Savage Earth 90210....
(fade in)
Nuyok - "In a low voice, Nuyok will follow up with his "explanation", saying "you may not believe it, but consider it - there will either be a comical trap awaiting you, or possibly Celeste acting as if she has been spurned or "allegedly" waiting for Vagrant. Your best response would be to say that Vagrant has made arrangements for private use of one of the rooms for a time, and requests your presence. This way the trick can be turned on them, and I'm sure Beka would assist."

Faliol - new
Shaking his muzzle vigorously from side-to-side, "I believe him. Maybe I will feel the fool, for I have played that role many times in my short life. But I rather be a fool than be wrong and end up mocking that man's pain. I am sorry, Nuyok. I cannot, WILL NOT, take that chance. I will go alone to give Celeste Vagrant's message."

He begins to scoot towards the door, but returns, "What if you are wrong? I know you are smarter than me, but even Adepts make mistakes..."

He waits for Nuyok's reply.

Vagrant's 'trick'
By: Vagrant

OOC: Keith, just in case this may change the course of events I just wanted to clarify something. The things that Vagrant says to Faliol are all true. Vagrant's infatuation with Celeste is also true. His reason for going along with the joke is because it makes him feel good, in some warped way, to talk of such things as love and companionship with Celeste but with the safety net of it all being a joke. He would have no idea how to handle things if she really did show some interest. Umbra's initial interest in him scared him the same way. He is very paranoid about what others would think of him without the rags. The fact that a few have seen him (Nuyok? I don't remember who else) disturbs him greatly.

Having had a Berry Ale or two, Riccoco has attempted (futiley) to keep an eye on the Dobeys. He's lost track of Faliol somewhere during some whispering with Nuyok. Now, the plucky 'coon drinks on, doing his best to keep track of the score between Vance and Beka. He's not quite sure what he's doing here, but if there are free drinks to be had, he might as well make the best of it!

IOW, General Carousing continues! Woot!

Faliol turns and bolts for the door, narrowly missing Cori and the drinks.

He weaves left, then right...hops over a bench, almost bumps into Konnur, resists the urge to slap him on the back of the head, waves goodbye to Ricco and runs through the door!

Vulpine feet beat rapidly as Prometheus' Gift to Females charges into the night.

"Got...to....tell...Celeste...Big...damn....fort....stables?....left...(thud)...@#$%!!!! Stupid dog!...(yipe, yipe, grrrrrrr)...crap, he...has buddies!...."

Amid much barking and cursing, Faliol runs into the stables...

.oO(Looks like Nuyok was right. Nobody is here. Pretty sad joke. Humans could learn a thing from otters on how to properly pull off a joke. Better check to be sure, just in case James was telling the truth.)

Faliol checks the hayloft (if there is one) and searches the stalls. He looks under wagons, etc. Celeste may be hiding anywhere....

.oO(Demon Kings! If she is in heat, she may pounce on the first male that walks into her mating den! It might not matter that I am a different species! She could be stalking me right now! My perfect tail will only drive her over the edge that much faster! She might want to create the beast with two backs!)

He wraps his tail around his right leg, to keep its unearthly beauty from tantalizing poor Celeste into a mating frenzy. He spins left, then right, eyes searching shadows, ears listening for sounds!

Spinedogs didn't faze him. Carnobrocs were now passe. Yaraza could be beat. But imagining a 6-foot tall tornado of lust was chilling his very soul....

Faliol wipes his eyes and begins in a quiet voice filled with sorrow.

"I lost my first family when I was very young. Until I joined Hamilton-Kent, Jareek was my entire family. Now I am losing my new family..."

He looks up at her, "Rath was killed, then Handle, now James has told me he is dying. Apparently, Nuyok cannot heal whatever it is that is killing him, or he would have done so by now. This is going to be worse than Rath and Handle, they died quickly. James is dying slowly and he is dying feeling like he is all alone. He is so lonely, eventhough he is surrounded with people...and there is nothing I can do to help him. I can't even help him with his last dying wish..."

Faliol kicks the third bucket (no one sitting on it) across the floor with a vicious thrust from his hind leg.

"Ow. I am going to lose all of you. One by one."

Water dripping off her, Celeste looks at Faliol, trying to determine if the joke has taken a new twist and whether or not Faliol is now in on it. "James is not dying. That was probably part of his ruse to get you and Nuyok out here. Of course, I see it didn't work on the mindwitch," she says with an edge to her voice. "What I could hear of what Nuyok was telling you, he was leading you around the room by the tail with his 'knowledge' about human mating rituals. He played on your concerns as did James and I. Now, this has gone too far. I appologize for hurting you, it was not meant to be this way, but James is not dying. Let us go down and speak with him." As she stands, a dark look crosses her face and with her foot, she sends the other bucket flying across the loft where it harmlessly shatters against a post.OOC: In view of Faliol's distress, I resisted the impulse to say 'kicks the bucket'. : D

I keep playing the world's smartest half-orcs in DnD (10 INT after the negative to stat is figured) and then roleplaying them as simpletons. Sigh. Silence follows Faliol's shout and then Celeste walks out of the stable. She walks over to James, she gives him a funny kind of twisted smile, "I'm sorry, our little joke seems to have taken a wrong turn and died an untimely death. Though, I am sure it will seem different in the morning. I am returning to the inn now." Taking his hand, she turns it palm up and presses a small pouch into it, and then folds his fingers over the pouch. "This is for you, please stay with Faliol." She walks back to the inn.

Stopping to talk with James, "She dumped a bucket of water on her own head and said she was no good at jokes. I told her something private that was troubling me and made her promise to keep what we discussed between the two of us secret from everyone else. Not 20 seconds later she says, "Lets you and I go talk to so and so!"

Quick as a snake, she starts off to tell him what I didn't want him to be told! Right AFTER promising me she wouldn't tell anyone! She is probably telling him RIGHT now! So, I got mad, hissed and stamped my foot. Which apparently hurt her feelings. I just don't understand females of any species."

"James, where did she go? I need to catch her before she tells him! Females! Did you know that I did the mating dance for Cas? Know what she did? Ignored my tail!"

He stalks over to James and wags his tail about 2 inches from his hooded face.

"Treated THIS excellent symbol of male virility with complete disregard! That was my first indication, no wait, second indication that she is just plain crazy! The first indicator was the poor chicken... Where was I? Oh, yeah! She ignored this perfectly groomed, masculine symbol of vulpine handsomeness! You don't understand my human friend....in theory, she shouldn't have been able to resist! I mean, why spend hours oiling it and brushing it if the female is too crazy to care!"

Faliol finishes rubbing his damaged ear and pulls himself up. He looks James directly in the cowl and says...

"I believe you, James. Nuyok placed some doubts in my mind that Celeste's abscence re-inforced a bit, but I now believe you to be sincere. I am glad you changed your mind. A chance for happiness comes seldom in this world, even fox kits know this to be a fact."

"Celeste and you....(Faliol pulls his sword, but not threateningly) are like the metals used to make this weapon. I watched a blacksmith work one rainy day. I asked him why he smelted different types of metal together to make swords when using one was quicker and easier. He told me that individually, the metals were brittle and soft. But combined, they were stronger. Each had some quality that bolstered the other. Celeste and you are somewhat brittle, but you each have different strengths. Together, you will make each other stronger and happier."

Faliol smiles (without teeth) "Let me go find your mate! I will bring her here. Then I will stand guard, at a discreet distance, to keep you two from being disturbed. This will be our little secret between the three of us."

Faliol waits for James' reply.

"The thing is *you* don't get it. I may have feelings for her but she has none for me. Nuyok was right about why I tried to get you guys out here. Celeste wanted to play a trick on you for all those sarcastic comments about her being a maneater. I went along with it since I wanted to look...well. Fun."

Vagrant rubs his eyes under his hood, "God, how did this escalate to here? Dude all I wanted to do was buy the lady a drink. Now I am talking to a fox about how I should be having sex with this woman and she doesn't even want me. Faliol, if you want to help me, go into that loft take whatever 'punishment' she wants to give out to you. Smile, no teeth, and get the hell back to the tavern. You'll have enough drinks to finish your night and I'll curl up in a ball in the darkest corner and wonder how the hell this day became what it did."

Vagrant continues at first to himself and then to Faliol as well, "Christ, a man finds out all his friends are crooks, has an epiphany and figures he can now see a way to toss away his old moral code, and then ends up to be the true butt of a bad practical joke done in by the caravan's resident wizard. Mark my words Faliol. I am back to the corner for good. I can hold up a wall a hell of a lot better then all of this crap."

Faliol stares at James, long and hard. He is thoroughly confused and it shows...

"She heard that about her being a 'maneater'? This WAS a practical joke all along?"

His shoulders slump, his tail stops its constant motion to lay flat and lifeless. His ears droop and his head hangs.

.oO(I am never going to trust pinks again. Ricco is right.)

He considers verbally lashing out due to the pain of his humilation at being made a complete and utter fool. But he remembers the real pain in James' voice as he confessed to having feelings for Celeste.

For only the second or third time in his life, Faliol does something totally selfless. He puts his feelings of betrayal into the back of his mind and focuses on what is really important.

"How do you know she has no feelings for you? Did she say that or did you just assume? Sure looked like she has romantic feelings for you. Even a stupid and gullible fox kit can see it. You forget, James, her decision to play this joke on me came AFTER Nuyok and I started making comments about the perils in your potential mating. If there wasn't some smoke indicating your passionate fires, we wouldn't be here right now."

He stands very close to James and whispers, "Don't you SEE?!? She was broadcasting her interest in you! She treats me like her kid brother. She treats Nuyok with cool respect. But with YOU she shows tenderness and signs of interest. And that was all before she ever decided to play a joke on me!"

James turns a bit in thought. Envoking an old nervous habit, he attempts to move his hand through his hair before realizing in this world he wear's a hood. He looks at Faliol again and then back into the air still contemplating the fox's words.

Barely containing his frustration in a whisper he answers, "Dammit Faliol, it was just supposed to be a fucking drink. That's all."

He glances up to the loft and then once again looking at the kit he gives out a big sigh, "Help me end this."

Faliol moves to the ladder, thinking furiously. He had to draw on something painful for this to look real, something from his past. It was going to hurt like Demon Kings were ripping his guts out, but James and Celeste had to be brought together.

Even if he tricked them into it!

At the base of the ladder, he uses Sleight of Hand (12 or less) to dip a little of the bug repellant onto his index finger. Whenever he got that crap in his eyes, they teared up making him look like he was bawling like a nearborn kit...

3d6: 13 Sun July 18, 2004 @1:06 PM (CDT)

If successful, he rubs both eyes with the stuff and slowly climbs the ladder, giving the vile stuff time to blind him good with tears coursing down his muzzle.

If he spots Celeste before she spots him, he will go find Vagrant and tell him where she is hiding. If she is not in the barn, he will go look in her room. If not there, he will check the baths, the jail, the church, you get the picture. Once he finds her, unless it is in the arms of another man, he will return and tell Vagrant her location. Then he will try to convince the mummy man to take a chance on Wuuuuuv, twuuu Wuuuuuuv!

OOC: There are few players so willing to immerse themselves in dramatic reality (or narrative causality, as Terry Pratchett calls it) as opposed to adversarial roleplaying. This sort of player-directed mutual storytelling is the good side of metagaming. By that I mean playing a character in an entertaining and interactive fashion even when you darn well know what's going on. : )

I hope that made sense. Quickie translation: You're a good sport and a great player. I wish I had more like you around my table.

James misses being mysterious Vagrant at this point. Talking with Celeste about this little trap was great but executing it has made him feel quite bad especially with the ringleader, Nuyok, out of the picture. Vagrant realizes that using his true emotions to trick Faliol was quite bad as he looks at him standing there in the stables. As bad as it sounds, Vagrant won't call off whatever is to happen because he doesn't want to disappoint Celeste in whatever she has in mind now.

Vagrant's action? Inaction until something more manifests (sorry!)

OOC: ...I must have been 10 years old and I spotted a strange critter in the yard across the street playing with some kids. I walked over to look at the black/white critter. As I stepped near it, it jumped on my leg and hung on for dear life! It was terrified and it was far stronger than it looked. Scratched me something fierce!

I hit it with a brick, it hung on. I grabbed a pipe wrench from the garage and whacked it upside the head. It hung on. I bit the end off an electrical cord, peeled the two wires apart, plugged it in and shocked the little monster till its hair caught on fire. It just clung tighter. I started up the chainsaw and it ran off, luckily for both of us.

Just kidding, I didn't hurt the little guy. Seriously, it took a few minutes, that seemed like an eternity, to get that little guy off my leg. I just stood there going, "Ouch. Ouch. It is clawing me! Ouch!" while the adults tried to get it to let go of my leg.

Never wear shorts when meeting a raccoon for the first time!

I meant that as a compliment, you know!

Celeste enters the common room. She appears to be 'damp', however, her hair is now braided and the falchion is once again in its customary place over her shoulder. Her facial expression reveals nothing. Casting a glance about the room, she notes where her travelling companions are and where the sailors are, then approaches Cori, " Do you have something called 'ouiski?"

When Cori brings the ouiski or the closest thing to it,she will take the entire bottle (on Vance's tab) and take up a position where she can observe the entire room and both doors and think. She takes small sips from a small cup.

Celeste will go back to the two rooms assigned to the caravan, re-braid her hair and pick up the falchion. This should be a signal that she is 'back on duty'. However she does not change clothes, because the others should still be wet from earlier when she washed them while she was cleaning up.

Vagrant returns to the Inn but does not go inside. Likely visible from a window he leans over the railing and watches the night sky. A few moments later he takes a package ouf of his rags and busily assembles something. A match lights up his rag covered face and shows his creation as a thin white stick. The match quickly goes out but leaves a small burning ember at the end. From time to time Vagrant puts the stick in his mouth and looks quite relaxed. Smoke trails off into the night.

An edited version of what another player has seen:

OOC: You can buy tobacco by the leaf. People either roll it up as is or shred it and roll it in paper. Assume the cost to make 5 paper roll-ups (cigarette) = $1 = 1 big roll-up (cigar).
Matches are on the list at 20 matches = $1.
Oilcloth pouch = $2 and up

Notes: Tobacco usage is not common in Tallon, except with soldiers and guards and some other fighting types. The dim red glow of a guard standing in the shelter of a doorway while the rain pounds the cobbles around him is a familiar enough sight.
Although tobacco is not a huge feature of society, I never meant for it to be non-existant. Besides, it's a good trade item. Most of it is grown in Boothia or Kingwell. Since it doesn't have modern additives, it probably requires more work to keep lit. Would pipes make more sense for this? Also, any thoughts on the prices?

OOC: I never been a smoker myself, so everything you have sounds reasonable to me, and it seems pipes, snuff, etc. (maybe even chewed) all would be reasonable as well.

Vagrant takes another long drag off his homemade cigarette, "Damn. It's been a long time."

He glances into the Inn and then continues to take in the night. His shoulders relax as he rests on the banister of the Inn's front steps.

Vance lowers his voice a bit and leans in.
"I'm sorry. Did I embarrass you? Would you like to discuss business privately?" There is absolutely nothing in his manner to show anything other than genuine concern for salvaging your feelings over a botched merchant trip (as far as he knows). But you know from long experience than Vance can easily appear to be whoever he wants people to see.

[Edited to add Cas to visibility. She is sticking close and eavesdropping]

"Sorry, I was lost in thought. The last time we were here ws... interesting. The business went fabulously well. The profit margin was much higher than expected and I am returning with various Adalan wines. How is my father?" she asks looking bright and interested yet the "my" is definately emphasized just a bit.

Vance's eyebrows raise at your report. "Excellent! Excellent! And all without registered guild guides. You must have saved a bit there. Risky, but if the guild never finds out, you can stretch those profits even more.
He takes a small sip. "As I hinted earlier, your father is not well. He took the news of your disappearance rather hard. He had heard that you were somewhere on the West side, on one of your... escapades, and then... nothing. It wasn't until we discovered the st-- missing silks and cart that we realized what you had done. Not that that decreased his concern. Terrible things happen to underprotected caravans in the Wilds.
"The poor man is beside himself. He's given me the responsibility of making sure you return safely.

Vance chuckles, then sobers. "You're serious. You think I want to... Oh Beka. Of course I'm not going to force you to do anything. When has anyone been able to do that. I'm merely suggesting that you think strongly about what you've put your father through. What you've done to him. He's distraught and wants his daughter back in one piece. I think that could most easily be done by returning back on the ship that brought me here. There's room for you and all your cargo. It's what your father desires."

Cas no longer feels like eaves dropping anymore. She walks over and takes a seat right next to Beka. She looks at Vance; her face a bright smile.

"I hope you don't mind me joining you," Cas says. She looks at the nearest Doberman. "I normally stick by Beka's side at all times. I just had to talk with a friend before joining."

Cas plops her hands into her lap and watches the rest of the conversation with great interest.

"I think you misunderstand. The Columbia will take me back as well. You can pay off your employees," he nods at Cas, "and travel back with me and all of your possessions."
He sips the wine. "As for what you will do when you return home, that's not really up to me. I presume you will need to talk with your father. You never seemd to lack for entertainment or diversion before. Of course, I don't know how much Ham knows of your forays into the less-than-respectable entertainments of Harker. You may need to employ a certain amount of... discretion." Though his tone ocntinues light and pleasant, there is just an edge of warning(?) in his voice.

"That's an admirable sentiment, but hardly realistic. Some of these folks are of.... questionable pasts. You have to be careful Beka. If you wish to become a true merchant, you'll need good contacts. You'll be judged by the company you keep. I can help you make good contacts. If you are really serious about this path, if it isn't another of your fads, you'll want to re-think. The farther you go down a path, the harder it is to take the road you should have."

"It's not that I want to split you up; it's a matter of the cost of passage on the Columbia. You could have saved yourself a tidy bit of money by hiring Adalan guides for your return journey. The River Master's vessel is about the safest way to get home. You wouldn't have any salary for that leg."
He finishes his wine.
"But it's getting late. We won't be going anywhere until the day after tomorrow, after Mistress Sasha is emplaced."
He rises and gestures to his entourage. "I meant what I said, Beka. Be careful of the company you keep. It could cut your budding career very short." He nods at the two of you and departs. (Unless of course, someone wants to get the last word.

...you are correct. I wouldn't turn her down, I am soooo desperate I wouldn't turn down a midget nun that was the spitting image of tiny Tammy Faye Baker! I would cut through that foot thick makeup with my blowtorch and....

(the rest of this message has been edited by someone who doesn't have low impulse control. We apologize for Bozimus, since he apparently lacks the shame to apologize for himself. We now return you to our regularly scheduled bad mouthing of Julia Roberts.)

Anyway, her mouth is soooo big that rumor has it that during Pretty Woman she swallowed Richard Gere, the director, two cameras (complete with crew) and Spaz, Gere's trained hamster in their entirety when she became too passionate during the big kissing scene.
Cripes! The boss is coming!
