The caravan is loaded up. Besides the regular suspects, Wickersticks, Angilak and Brother Cadbury travel with you. Cadbury is riding the departed Kent's horse, while Angilak and Riccoco have hitched their horse to his cart.
Doom and Mako see you off at the front gate.
Mako growls, "Well, your second stay was certainly more comfortable than your first. You should find the road ahead a bit easier, as well. The crew from Tallon has just swept it a few days ago. I heard they cleaned up that nasty deadfall you ran into." This assumes any of you has actually told him the Carnobroc story
"I know you're all well provisioned, but here's a little parting gift." He gives a solemn wink as he hands you a bundle of, well, goodies. Later you will discover some rare treats including two bottles of sipping whiskey and some pale yellow cheese you saw on the Fort Mistress' table yesterday.
Doom simply intones, "I sincerely wish that not too many of you are killed on the way back. He says this as if the odds are not good.
A couple of other soldiers, including the otters, come up and shake hands and pat backs as well.

Nuyok will depart in the most inconspicuous way he can in the Lekchock form, either before the caravan ostensibly as an advance scout or in Beka's wagon.

"it looks as though you will probably survive the night Doom. The new Master probably has all the lines strengthened. Sorry about that!" Beka grins at his consternation. "Mako, this has been a wonderful diversion ffrom the road. Thank you." She leans in and whispers to Mako, "I feel I must warn you, Vance isn't the Stone solid man he seems, I don't know what he's up to, but I'd keep an eye on him when he comes through." She stands up straight and speaks in a normal tone, " Thanks for everything! I hope I'll see you again soon."

Cas presses the oxen forward in extremely optimistic mood. "We are going back to Tallon. It seems like its been years, hasn't it?"

OOC: Just looking for a reminder, any of the previous lines held by Ash would have been broken upon his death and the power provided would have faded over a short time thereafter (hours/days?), right? So the new master would need to set up all new defenses, etc.?

This is correct. If you wanted to have done any inquiring, you would have been told that the Corps of Engineers (animists and morphists) dispatched a team immediately to do the basic work, since there was a lot of it. Mistress Sashsa will do some of the more difficult or higher security jobs such as setting passwords to specific animations, etc.
The corps will transfer lines to her before they leave and she will delegate to whatever linemen are under her command.

OOC: I figured others had come since she probably wasn't a master of everything, then transferred the ley lines to her. A reminder request, can ley lines be held by more than one individual at a time?

In fact, this is good practice for important ley lines.

Faliol silently accepts Mako's gifts, wondering what he has done to deserve Mako's generosity.

His fox instincts for politeness take over as he walks up to Mako and extends a paw.

"Thank you for everything, Mr. Mako. Once again, your generosity overwhelms me. I look forward to seeing you on my next trip to the Lizard."

Turning to Doom, "I would wish you luck, Sgt. Doom, but you shall not need it. Any critter that eats you would soon break wind that would act as a beacon for the carnivores. T'would be like ringing the old dinner bell. If the flatulence doesn't bring about their deaths, the squirts of Doom would leave them too weak to fight off predators. Either way, the critters know this by instinct, so you will be quite safe."

"Ehh... Thank you?" intones the large man, somewhat nonplussed.

Ricco pats his Tallon Conscript leather vest, "Be thanking you kindly, Master Mako. For trips to the Lizard this be a fine one!" Ricco would say more, but he's antsy to get to Tallon and the Nightfolk Caves beyond.

Vagrant nods goodbye to any of the fort that look at him towards the back of the group. Otherwise, he keeps silent. He seems to be eyeing each of the members of his caravan with added interest.

Celeste bids farewell to the denizens of Fort Lizard and to Father Jeo.

Ricco finds time to square off some conversation time with the vis limited people and Angilak. "Things be getting a nip dangerous the close we be gettin' to Tallon, now. With the Dobies before an' them knowin' the caves an' all."

Riccoco wrings his leathery-padded paws nervously. "That 'Pine Dashel could be spillin' 'is sticky guts to Vance, too..."

Fretting, Ricco lets his voice drain to silence, eyes expectant and worried on the other folks of the Caravan.

OOC: Was Lekchock entering through the caves too? Perhaps so, due to some conversation apart from Nuyok?

OOC: He was there in the Stable when we were talking of it, though. So, I included him in this.

"What do you know of Vance's dobies, how many have you seen in his employ? Do you know if he employs any adepts? I am concerned about Dashel as well, do we have any evident reason for concern though, or just an expectation of mercenary behavior on his part?"

*blink*

Riccoco, turns to stare at NuChock-Lekyok with big Beastly Eyes, silently.

"What you be sayin'?" He finally manages.

OOC: Or, if you'd prefer, my first thought:

'What you be talkin' bout, Nuyok'

"You say that the dobies know the caves and are a threat to our entry to Tallon. Presumably Dashel may inform Vance of our planned entry through the caves, so we need to be concerned about interference from the dobies. Therefore, I wondered what you know of Vance's dobies, for instance, how many have you seen in his employ at any point in time. Also, whether he employs any adepts to your knowledge. It is best that we all know as much as we can about our potential adversary before facing them. Also, what can you tell me about the caves and their denizens?"

"That night... Before we all be leavin' Tallon together, Ol' Riccoco be findin' a pair o' Vance's hounds in the Nightfolk Caverns. Ol' Riccoco not be expectin' that sort o' breed lurkin' about. The Nightfolk be a shy folk and not kind to the trespassin' type." Ricco pauses her to wink knowingly at Lekyok.

"Anywhatsit, Ol' Riccoco be learnin' late they be o' the Vance wad. Numbers and the like be beyond this 'Coon. Miss Beka be like to know more. Iffin' that spike Dashel be spillin' a bit, Vance'll be wantin' Ol' Riccoco or any with him quieted, long-sleep like. That be makin' the Caverns a sketchy place. Too bad there be no other way to be slippin' past the Brewer's Guild."

"Well, I'm sure Vance can hire more muscle, so perhaps his number employed is not so important. What matters more is our ability to get through the caves successfully, which goes to your knowledge of them, and the likelihood of interference by the nightfolk - what can you say about those?"

"As a follow-up though, since you are not part of Beka's caravan, why would Vance be concerned with your shipment?"

Faliol walks over and stares up at Numchock. "This is beginning to sound an awful lot like an interrogation, Nuy..Lekchock. Ricco has told you what he thinks you need to know...which is far more than you have told us, I might add."

"I am merely gauging the threat level for our entry. As Vance likely knows Riccoco to not be part of Beka's caravan, it seems unlikely he would act to interfere, and the threat level would be low. However, since Riccoco had an encounter with the dobies before leaving, perhaps it is something on a more personal level with them, and again, relatively low. However, if there is an issue with Vance, the threat may be high and we need to act accordingly. Do you disagree?"

Ricco nods to Nuyok and pats Faliol's shoulder. "It be fine, Foxkit."

"The Nightfolk shall be no problem..." Ricco scratches a bit under his chin. "That night in Tallon, Vance's hounds be kidnappin' Nightfolk for slave sale. Ol' Riccoco be a witness. That sort a thing be bad looked upon by the Archon. The threat from Vance be real, but somethin' altogether dif-er-ent than Miss Beka's troubles."

"Ol' Riccoco be knowin' the path o' the Caverns... The fate o' the Nightfolk be somethin' ta be worryin' on, though."

"Do the dobies or Vance recognize you as a witness to the kidnappings? If so, and if Dashel tells a tale, then we may indeed face a threat. But with your knowledge of the caves and the denizens, that should aid us, I would think."

Ricco nods woefully, his ears drooping, "That be the right-o-it, Master Nuyok. The dobie be havin' Ol' Riccoco's scent. An', with the Hounds that be worse than a good look-see."

"Mayhap, you be right an' all. Ol' Riccoco be knowin' the byways an' lieways right enou'."

"Did they recognize you at the Fort?"

Riccoco breaks into a quick chuckle, "Mayhap one would have... Iffin' he didn't be havin' a nose full o' Berry ale!"

"What do you mean about the fate of the Nightfolk? As in, theoretically something should be done to help them, or do you intend concrete action? It would seem at this point the primary goal is to enter Tallon unscathed and unnoticed. If they need saving, well, Vance may have to be dealt with much like the "merchant" back in Adala, which would help them, you, and Beka, but there is a time and place for such things."

"It be seemin' that Vance not be stoppin' at a Nightfol' or two. He may be tryin' to sell of the lot o' them. Iffin' that be the case... Who be knowin' what state the Caverns be?"

Ricco shifts uneasily and shifts his leather vest. "Ol' Riccoco not be the type to be goin' to the Archon. There be the fact o' those past... misunderstandin's we be havin' between the two o' us."

"Good point, Vance may have done some major damage in the time we have been gone, if that is his plan. I doubt the caves themselves have changed though. As for the Archon and you, that's certainly your own business."

Once all good-byes are said, the wagon and cart and associated travellers leave the safety of the fort. It feels like stepping of the edge of the pool and into deep waters, but you are all better swimmers than you were before.
Shortly afterward, in resonance with the watery metaphor, it begins to rain (of course).
The journey is the smoothest you have yet had. An entire day goes by and not once does anything try to kill, eat or rob you. The rain is steady but light and almost pleasantly warm.
Areas that were overgrown and required machete work have been recently trimmed and cut back, presumably by the Tallonite army.
You camp by a small stream that eventually feeds the inlet. Brother Cadbury produces a number of lines and hooks and goes about setting them up along the bank. "We may not get a nibble tonight, but with any luck, we'll have fish for breakfast."
Angilak sniffs the air. "It has been my constant experience that the times that are quietest often presage the most violent episodes. Vigilance is the watchword."

"I think we all have had that experience," Cas says. "Which probably means Beka's friend is up ahead and planning an ambush. But you are right. It would be better to make sure we are prepared."

Cas makes a point to make sure her stiletto is ready should battle break out while she is driving the oxen.

"Oh, I doubt they have returned only to trek back through the jungle to us. They probably have not had the time nor the inclination. If I were them, I would wait for the prey to come to me..." Nuyok trails off ominously.

Looking uneasily at the water as Cadbury sets up fishing lines, Faliol says in a passable Doom impersonation, "Be sure something else isn't lurking about hoping to catch and fix Cadburys for breakfast, Brother. Always remember that in the wild, you are on something else's menu. You might want to sit further away from the water...better to lose a fish than an appendage."

Nuyok will do his standard sighted surveillance of the area for any potential threats, and coordinate watches, splitting himself, Brother Cadbury, and Lekchock with Riccoco (you watch, yes?) into separate watches as that provides the best distribution of those with the ability to see at night with Lekchock's abilities supplementing Riccoco's different sight.

It is both good and bad to be back in the jungle once more. In the Jungle one knows everything is waiting around the next bend to snuff the candle of life and is prepared. In the Lizard, Adala, or civilization one can never be sure if the snake is friend or foe.

The morning finds three fat fish on Cadbury's lines. Breakfast is fresh and hearty. There is a brief, poignant moment as various of you remember Handle's attempts at cooking, or Umbra's truly skilled culinary arts. Nevertheless, Cadbury shares with all. (Fish, Rice, Beans, Bread and Potato are the staples of the Tallonite diet).
The rain continues soft and manageable. Early on, you find a huge tree that lies across the road. It has been sectioned and the blocking parts have been removed. With recognition, you realize this is the Carnobroc site. Though you are wary and watchful, there is no sign of the killer plants. A short while later, you cross a repaired bridge, which had been washed away on your last visit.
Towards night, you approach the area where you first camped. It was a long haul, but you remember it as being well defensible and somewhat hidden. It is a small clearing, with cliff-faces protecting it and a high lookout rock that can see the main road.
Faliol approaches first, using his scouting abilities. He is not certain at first, but quickly realizes that there is someone up there already. It's only a brief movement that betrays their existence, but it's enough.
He quickly runs back to the main group, realizing an arrow shot would surely be heard at this range, especially to an attentive ear. He is not certain if he has likewise been spotted.

Faliol sprints up to Lekchock (the original). "Nuyok, there is someone up ahead! Not sure if they spotted me!"

"Faliol, were they camped, or simply there? Any idea on numbers, their species, and their disposition?"

"Everyone, we have a situation ahead. Given the approaching darkness, I suggest Brother Cadbury and Riccoco stay to the back and sides to watch for possible ambush, Lekchock sneak ahead in the trees to see what he sees, while Celeste, Faliol, and myself move forward a bit so that I might get a look and to help defend Lekchock as necessary. That should leave plenty to defend the caravan as necessary (Beka, Cas, Vagrant, Peaches, Angilak, Will, and of course Riccoco and Cadbury)."

Ricco cries in nearing despair. "It must be one o' them. Doom be havin' the right o' it. The lot o' us will never be makin' it back to Tallon!"

He sniffs, it is fairly obvious, Ricco is cracking under the stress of their impeding arrival back in Tallon. He sniffs quickly, blinking back tears of anguish, "The Sabre, by the Toad. Iffin' Ol' Riccoco could simply be lollygaggin' along it once more..." He mutters a bit more as he shifts position back towards his appointed spot along the caravan.

As Nuyok's voice comes out of the wrong Lekchock, Faliol shrugs at the real Lekchock.

"I wish one of you would wear an earring or scarf or smear blue paint on your damn forehead!"

He is about to answer Nuychock when Ricco panics.

Rushing to his buddy's side, Faliol walks him away from the others before stating, "Steady, Ricco! You are the same 'coon that went out to light that last lantern even though the riven were aprowl! You should have died then, but you didn't! You should have died when we fought Ash, but you didn't! You should have died when you fought that bastard that killed Rath, but you didn't! You fell off a cliff for Prometheus' sake! You see my point? Certain death is only certain if you give up. Now suck in that berry ale gut, and prepare those fat little thighs for fighting!"

"Right then, Red. It be in the not givin' up..." He nods his head a few times, steadying himself. He glances at his thighs and gives Faliol a hurt look, but doesn't say anything.

A Fortress of Solitude once more, Ricco moves to his appointed position watching the caravan's flanks with Brother Cadbury.

OOC You should know by now that Faliol is gently ribbing his friend and does not mean to hurt his feelings. Besides, if Ricco focuses on his chunky thighs and forgets about impending death...mission accomplished!

Nuyok heads forward and just shakes his head, glancing at his lumina and clothing, which he had pointed out to the caravan to help distinguish them...

OOC I forgot! It has been soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oh soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo very long!

"I only saw a brief movement. Don't know how many or what... Actually, I am glad someone is there. Betsy has been bored."

He draws Betsy off his shoulder, strings the old girl, murmurs sweet nothings to her, and nocks an arrow.

Then he follows Nuychock and Beka.

OOC: Celeste, not Beka Beka's like a ship captain, needs to be with the caravan!

OOC Uppity nitpicking Adept shapechangers! Why don't you taunt the elderly or drop kick a mime? Huh? Why you always gotta pick on poor little me?

OOC: Perhaps Nuyok could shapechange Celeste into a voluptuous female fox and that would settle down Faliol?

OOC Cause Vagrant would pull a bazooka out of those robes and make it rain fox for weeks on end!

Naughty Adept! Bad! Bad!

Celeste moves forward on the trail, pausing only to watch Faliol soothe Ricco's nerves, and then with a shake of her head and a smile and with the great falchion drawn, return to the cautious advance with Nuyok.

OOC Forgive my taking liberties with position...

IC Faliol moves up on Nuyok's left, scanning the jungle to that side and attempting to move quietly. His ears are moving independently in that odd fox way...

OOC: Geez do you guys wait until I go out of town then go into a posting frenzy? I think I'm finally up to speed on everything.

Lek will go back to Nuyok (if he isn't already). "You wan' I shoul look ahead, see whas' around dat corner?"

"Scouting what he is guarding would be a good idea, but if he must be a sentry for a reason, so perhaps it would be too risky...wait, he's signalling something..."

You people jump on a new post and leave nothing for me!

Beka walks to the head of the oxen and looks back to Cas driving them, "Here goes nothing!"

I'm keeping everyone inthe visibility to avoid group splitting (and GM-exhausting) If you are not in the advance, assume that you can only hear the interchange, but see nothing.

Lekchok sneaks through the canopy, balancing the little time of light with the need for stealth. Eventually, he has a clear look at the sentry. It is a humanoid figure, over 6 feet in height. He has bright red skin and two sharp horns. He is extremely well-muscled and now that he is emplaced, sits with a preternatural stillness. He is armed and armored with the products of civilization.

Nuyok sees roughly the same thing, but with less detail. His adept senses do reveal to him a sense of alertness. No directed danger emanates from the being, but there seems to be the potential for it. He bears no spirit-items.

Back at the Caravan, the others wait in tense stillness.

As yet, he does not appear to notice you.

Note, the figure shown is an old drawing. The actual person has a large sword and heavy bow, as well as numerous other small arms. He looks dangerous.

OOC: It's the demon from 'Legend'

Nuyok will stop and scan the area closely for any others who may be nearby, as well as for hostile intent, poison (e.g., on his weapons), or traps.

You dimly perceive that the trail that leads into the unseen clearing has some kind of tripwire or snare. Exact nature/placement is unknown.

How many? How small? Does it looks like he can hit you with them?

The demonic creature makes no sound, but suddenly makes a complex series of hand gestures, like he is signalling someone. You are pretty sure that numbers were involved and directions were given. However, the movements were defintiely a practiced gesture and the exact meaning is uncertain.
The signallee is unseen.

OOC: If Lekchock had returned as stated above, probably Nuyok? Thus my post to Lekchock above, trying to go with the flow...

OOC: Assuming Nuyok saw this...

"We've been spotted. Oh, and past the sentry is some sort of snare, so watch out. They haven't attacked yet, so let's not give them a reason to. We could approach, retreat, or stay still. I say we stand our ground for a bit and await their move, with Lekchock back up in the trees. Sound good?"

Fingering the blade edge of the falchion, Celeste nods, "Yes, I think standing our ground is good. Make them come to us."

Cas had been sitting at the cart waiting for word as to whether this was an engagement or just people making camp.

"I knew it! I knew it couldn't be easy just for once. Okay, I'm going to tie off the cart. They have a trap set up ahead for us so why don't we just wait here and have them come to us? Or maybe we can sneak around and attack them from behind."

Cas prepares here weapon and is going to stay and defend the cart from attack. She will not go and attack unless that falls into whatever the group decides to do.

OOC: Would have posted much sooner but I got addicted to X-Men Legends this weekend.

OOC: We'll go with Nuyok having seen this and then passed it around.

Unfortuantely, those back at the caravn (including Cas) are still unaware of the nature of the sentry.

Faliol rolls his eyes in a human-like gesture. Whispering quietly so that Celeste and Nuyok can hear him, "What if they are thinking the same? Waiting for us to move? Then it all comes down to who dies from the blood lost to these ravenous mosquitoes first...."

"Patience, you must have, young fox. Time helps our caravan prepare for defense, whereas they already appear set for such, so time is on our side."

With Cas' inspiration, the caravan members get the cart into as defensive a position as possible. You all have effective cover. Your advance sentries have fallen back long enough to pass on what they have seen.
"We will buy our meager lives with blood and steel as our coinage if need be." growls Angilak.
"Wait," says Brother Cadbury. "Are we certain there must be a fight?"
"Ye heard the scouts, Brother," rejoins Jareek. " That bruiser is loaded for chimera and prob'ly has a nasty disposition te boot."
"Well, we do seem to be at an impasse," agrees the priest. "We cannot pass without exposing ourselves to ambush, and we cannot retreat as they are likely headed in the direction of the Fort. What shall we do?"

Lekchock, did you intend to scout ahead and try to spy on the camp area you have been told is there, or do you want to return with the others to help decide upon a strategy? If the former, try to avoid reading this thread. I'd remove you from visibility, but I'm not sure what you want to do.

OOC: Presumably Faliol can relay messages between the advance group and caravan while the advance group keeps an eye out? If so...

"Faliol, please let the caravan know that we have been spotted, and though their sentry remains in position, he relayed signals to the others. We will stay here to observe, while the caravan prepares to defend, if necessary. That may not be necessary though, as they seem camped, since they have a snare set past the sentry. Once they have the defenses set, the advance group will see if they have approached us, otherwise, we will advance to parley."

Faliol nods once to Nuychok and creeps back to the caravan.

Making his way to Beka's side, Faliol says "Miss Beka, they have a sentry that has spotted us and while he remains in one spot, he sent signals to an unknown number of skulkers. Evidently, they also have a camp. Nuyok requests that those of you guarding the caravan stay vigilant. We in the advance group will wait to see what they do and if nothing bad happens, move forward to parlay. Anything I should pass on to Nuyok?"

"Lekchock, if you are willing and interested, taking a wide path around the sentry, you could take a look at their presumed camp while Faliol is relaying our messages."

"..Tru' Eyes."

Lekchock will move off and try to circle around to get a better look.

OOC: Sorry I'm at work and can't access my character, or I'd post the stealth, KS: Jungle rolls

eyes momentarily unfocused on unyet perceived dangers from the surrounding jungle foliage. "Your purse be the fullest, Angilak. For a wee merchant, Ol' Riccoco be hopin' they be takin' a smaller cut!"

Nuyok will try to keep an eye on Lekchock as best as he can, while also scanning the area to make sure the presumed encamped are not sneaking up, and wait for Faliol's return.

While the others are gone, "so Celeste, I doubt the presumed encampment ahead can negotiate the jungle like Lekchock, and I do not see them yet, so I believe we will need to check this out once our caravan's defenses are set. You and I could approach, with Lekchock above for surprise, and Faliol back aways for archery support and to send word on what happens. How is that for a plan?"

Celeste looks at Nuychok and nods, "I am ready if you are. Weapons sheathed or out?"

"Sheathed, no threat I can detect so far. Once we get a report from Lekchock, we'll advance."

Lekchock returns after reconnoitering the area. (The foliage and topography are really too difficult for Faliol to navigate without taking hours or making lots of noise. There's a reason that travellers like this campsite.)
There are more of the beings matching the one you saw earlier. They are apparently mutants and not riven. He could not get close enough to give details, since they have scouts and sentries of their own.
Although actual words were difficult to pick out, Leckchock believes the beings have a great deal of discipline. Orders are given and followed quickly. They are definitely aware of your party and are doing their own recon.

Ricco blurts in obvious dismay! "It be the start of an attack from Mingatook on Tallon!" He bemoans his fate, "They can't be lettin' us get away with seein' their force. It bein' the end o' the Hamilton 'van."

Turning away he throws wild eyes on the jungle foliage, simply trying to find a single member of the other reconoitering squad.

OOC: Faliol wasn't scouting, he was to return to the advance group after relaying messages to the caravan

Getting antsy, Vagrant whispers to beka, "I am going to get some some better coverage of the wagon."

With his crossbow he motions at the tree above and unless stopped by the caravan leader he'll carefully scale the tree and take a position above the caravan and keep his crossbow at the ready.

Ricco can't help but watch as Vagrant begins to climb up into the tree. It reminds him of not so long ago. The Cravan was beig attacked by spine-dogs and Vagrant decided to climb the tree.

That day he'd fallen, stunning himself for a bit. If it hadn't been for plucky coonishness... Vagrant would have likely been dinner for the hounds that night.

Ricco chuckles briefly and takes a deep breath. Whatever happens, the people around him were the closest to a Bray Riccoco had had since his early years. For pinks, they weren't so bad.
