Celeste stands ready, her body still and tense as the falchion held in a rock-steady grip. Her emotionless face betrays no anxiety nor fear, merely readiness.
The Tarn nods appreciatively and turns to his Udan. "Udan Rothar, you were most vocal in their defense. I name you our champion."
Rothar looks momentarily surprised. "I had though-- Yes, Tarn." He draws his sword, a heavy, wicked-looking thing. He faces Celeste while a lowly hoofsoldier hastily scribes a circle in dirt and bracken around them. It is large enough to maneuver comfortably in, but not so large as to take a significant area of the campsite. The Tarn allows any who wish to gather near, but does not allow any from the merchant caravan to position themselves beyond the line of devils that stand between them and the exit.

The two combatanats face each other. Udan Rothar slowly raises his sword in salute, then places it at the ready. The crowd is silent, awaiting the dance of death to come. The silence is broken by the Tarn, "The combatants must remain in the circle until the duel is finished. If the are thrown or fall out, they will be thrown back. No ohter may strike a blow but the duelists. It will continue until the vanquished is dead or no longer capable of fighting.
"Begin!"

Celeste, what are your immediate actions and your anticipated tactics?

The rest of you, what positions do you take? Unless you get really creative, your choices are probably at the circle's edge, standing somewhat back, or taking cover behind a wagon or animal of burden.

Feel free to discuss out loud, the devis are not silent now that combat has begun.

Celeste raises her sword to salute the caravan, the Tarn and and Udan Rothar in that order. She advances to the inner third of the circle, (within striking distance) and assumes a ready stance facing Rothar....and wait.... She will allow him to strike first and move to block. Unless these beings are super fast, she expects to get an opportunity to hit and quickly back out of the way before Rothar can either block or hit again.

Initially she will seek to disable Udan as quickly as possible, because it is obvious that even if the devil merks are not as quick as she, they most likely have more stamina, so, speed, (but not hastiness) is of the essence.

Ricco has already slipped off, hiding and working on a way to get the Caravan out regardless of how the fight turns out. The plan was to slip away unawares and check out the pass leading out.

Is it still well-guarded? Anyway to create a diversion? Is Nipgin flammable?

OOC Being OUT OF TOWN is a problem!

Upon the mention of Nuyok being the center of the problem, he would have stopped his ritual, stated that his original question did indeed have merit (i.e., who paid), and that this did not involve the rest at all, so it was only an issue between himself and the merks...but now I guess he will stand and quietly observe what plays out...

After some contemplation, Nuyok will say `Tarn, Udan should not be punished for his assistance. Since this does not involve the others, only myself, this situation should be resolved between you and me, in a reasonable and honorable fashion. Perhaps some discussion of my past will help with that.`

OOC: At this point I am loathe to retcon any of the preceding action. The Tarn will repeat that the contract was to kill Nuyok "and his companions", regardless of whether Nuyok personally feels they are innocent bystanders. As for your offer, let us assume that Celeste caught your intention and interrupted with her own offer. How noble.

Celeste studies her opponent, deciding to parry the first few blows. Hopefully, she can learn his speed and skill. It is even possible she will find an opening in his defense.

The first blow comes so lightning fast, she is surprised, even though prepared. She turns what would have been a thrust through the throat into a minor shoulder wound. Silently, she vows not to underestimate him by his size. He is very fast.

Two more blows are blocked in succession. So far, he has not given her an opening, though he has not scored upon her again.

Suddenly a quick dip of his blade gets past her guard and hits her in the side. She is not sure, but he may have hit a rib. Typically stoic, she does not flinch or cry out. However, she may need to reassess her strategy. He is too fast and deadly for her to rely on a defensive posture. He hasn't given her an opening to exploit.

She suddenly goes on the offensive, and shows the devil what speed truly means. Her sword is nearly invisible in its movement as she brings it around and down on his sword arm, hoping to disable him. Unfortunately, the blow glances of his studded greave.

In return, he slices her across the midsection for a light blow, slightly more than the blooding she gave herself to start with.

The two combatants circle a moment, catching their breath and seeking for weakness.

At this point Celeste is definitely the worse off. She has been hit three times, once seriously. The devil has hardly been winded. Actions? Contingencies? Strategies? Solioquies?

Celeste will press the attack, hoping to wind Udan before she loses more blood (body). If the opportunity presents itself, of course, she will seek to strike an unprotected part of his body, such as the hamstrings or calves. (you know, the 'low' Burgundian Roundhouse as opposed to the 'high' )
At this point, she will not waste her breath on soliliquys, rather she will attempt to draw upon her hatred of her father to fuel her attacks, thereby becoming once more what she thought she had left behind, a Raider of Red Tide.

Celeste goes totally offensive, whirling her falchion in blinding arcs. There is a murmur of appreciation from the devils. She gets past the devil's guard and tags a minor scratch on his upper arm, again he deflects the worst of it with his greave.

Unfortunately, this leaves an opening he is quick to exploit. His sword cuts deep into her upper chest. Celeste is rather bloody now and the wound has caused her off arm to dangle like a rag, uselessly.

However, again she doesn't flinch, and whil he is withdrawing his sword, she stabs him in the gullet, causing him to involuntarily double over.

Before he can straighten, she stabs him again in the stomnach. He falls to one knee now. Too weak to stand, and too deeply entangled with the red mutant, Celeste follows him to the ground. They scuffle briefly; Celeste whips her falchion around and catches Udan Rothar in the neck. The sword cuts his flesh, but she does not draw it sideways, to open his artery. Instead kneels there, looking confused, dazed and disoriented.

Celeste, there is a roaring in your ears and your visions seems to be nothing but flashes and dark spots. You have a vague idea that you are covered with blood, but you cannot remember whose or why. Someone is shouting at you, but you have no idea what they are saying. Gradually you realize that you are kneeling (or lying) on someone, with your sword to their throat. Again, you don't really know what's going on, but you feel so weeak, and so, so tired.

The Tarn stands and says, "Hold! Udan Rothar is judged incapable of fighting further. The contest, and his life, belong to Celeste of the Red Tide. Warrior, to spare or to kill are yours to decide."
Celeste looks numb and confused still, her face an ashen grey. She does not react.
You will notice that Celeste is not included in the visibility here. You may respond in this thread, but she is seemingly insensible to her surroundings.
Although her companions may wish to rush the ring, the Tarn will order all to stand back, "Stay your ground! She must end this if she is to held the victor." The devils stand ready to back up his claim. Celeste blinks stupidly.

Celeste shakes her head, as if to somehow clear her mind, one fact being apparent to her, that she is still alive, and whoever is layed out one the ground, may not be so lucky. Staggering to her feet and using the falchion as a prop, and standing shakily, she struggles to get the words out, "I...claim...this life...as is my...right. Live...or die...by my...command..." and then her knees give out and she drops the falchion and catches herself with her right hand upon the red chest before her. Once again she is kneeling before her opponent. Raising her head, she casts around the circle of blurry figures searching for anything familiar. Moving her head thusly proves to be too much, and the bloody barbarian collapes across the body of Udan Rothar, as if in a lovers embrace.

Faliol reaches Celeste's side. At first it looks as though he will be impeded, but a motion from the Tarn holds the warriors.
The fox rolls Celeste from the top of the Udan. Her face is ashen pale. She does not react.
The Tarn observes. Finally he makes pronouncement. "I hold that the merchants have won their grace. Celeste delivered no death blow, but it is my judgement that it was deliberatley withheld."
As he speaks, several devils enter the circle to retrieve Rothar. To your amazement, they help him to his feet. He is indeed bloody and damaged, but he can walk slowly with help.
After a brief whispered conversation to an aid, the Tarn further speaks. "We are not ungrateful that the Udan will continue to be of use. By giving us a gift of his life, We will extend to you another full day, as well as such woundwort and healing you may require."
I am proceeding under the assumption that Nuyok will leap in to begin such healing on Celeste that he can. The Woundwort mentioned is a commonly known, though uncommonly found plant that greatly speeds healing. It's not a cheap gift.

Shooting a foul look at Faliol, Nuyok will saunter over in his usual insouciant manner, which in this case is a cover for his suspicion of the devils and their stated lack of moral code, which might mean they would still do them harm, therefore he scans them for hostility before tending to Celeste.

Also, I would ask you to provide information on those who hired you."

Celeste is stabilized though it is touch and go for a while. She will need to lie in the back of the cart when you travel. She will definitely not endure rough handling. Her wounds are bound and she is resting comfortably.
The Tarn listens to Nuyok's offer. He glances over at the Udan, who is ambulatory and undergoing normal doctoring. "His wounds are not mortal. He will bear scars and grow stronger from defeat.
"However, Master Nuyok, I would speak with you in private if you would learn some things that might be of use to you."
Some of the caravan oviously thinks this is a bad idea, but the Tarn replies, "You have seen what lengths the company will go to in order to preserve our word. You are not to be harmed. What I have to say is for the ears of the Stonetalker. What he desires to do with the information afterward is his own business."

As the party moves a little more threateningly towards Nuyok, Lekchock steps up protectively. His hand subtlely rests on the hilt of a very large knife. He stands just behind Nuyok's left shoulder, eyeing the party.

Ricco glances over as Nuyok steps into the Tarn's tent. He shakes his head knowing the tricky Adept had more twists and turns to his words than the Sabre backwaters south of Tallon. Seeing a standoff with the Jungle man and his friends, the plucky 'Coon decides to do what he can and trundles over.

"This not be the place no the time to be nitpickin' on each other like the little brees o' the Bray. Celeste be down in the dirt bleedin' out an' you be gettin' riled up. We be needin' to stick together!"

Faliol's fur bristles and he walks calmly over to stand in front of Lekchock. "Do you intend to use that knife on me, Lekchock?"

Brother Cadbury has remained silent until this point, but now his face is angry, almost wrathful. "There's been enough fighting and bladework. Celeste lies there patched and wounded and you are all bristling and brandishing weapons."
He fumes for a second, then continues, "Let's all take a deep breath and stand back before someone does or says something they'll regret forever. There'll be time for questions and answers later."
He suddenly looks tired. He sighs.

"Peace. I beg you."

"Don' know, is it needed?" Lekchock says it matter-of-factly, no trying to intimidate, just a simple question. His eyes never leave Faliol's and his relaxed stance never changes.

Slowly rising after being drained from his healing ordeal, Nuyok takes a long, hard look over the party one-by-one, lastly at Lekchock, making a calming gesture with his hand, and says to the Tarn "I will hear what you have to say."

BTW, for future reference, is there any additional wound wort left over?

Riccoco stands nearby, though most of you are pretty sure he hand't been around during the duel. He frets a lot, speculatively eyeing the other members of the caravan and the Devil Mercs. Anytime it looks like he might say something, he clamps his muzzle shut and twists his whiskers.

Dire Warnings

The Tarn motions you over to his tent, where you cannot be observed.
"Your folk have won the right to a fuller story," he begins. "Few humans will fight for their folk to such an end without surrendering or retreating. You all also stayed your hands while the fight went on. That shows honor. You would be well advised to curb some of the looser tongues, though. Now that the battle is settled, I will brook no further insult. Bad for discipline."
He pours a bit of the wine that Beka gave him and offers you a small cup.
"The simplest solution by far would have been to return the wine. In truth, the wine was never even made an official condiotn of safe camp, so even that was unnecessary.
"No, the reason I accepted the challenge and the duel was that I am not certain the bargain I made regarding your lives was genuine. Devil Mercs do not usually hire out for such work. We are warriors, not assassins. However, I distinctly remember willingly accepting the contract. This is not in my nature, though not beyond the realm of possibility. I suspect strongly that my agreement was made under some stonetalker influence. I think that either the client or his agent is a master of some sort."
He drains the cup. "You may travel easily. Though we will likely pursue you to fulfill the letter of the contract, we will use no haste. Neither shall we employ stealth. You shall know when we are near, if you travel so slowly as to let us catch up."
He begins to maneuver you back into the open. "Beware. I believe your enemies desire more than your own death. Though your companions were not enumerated, the merchant female and the raccoon were described to me. Whoever your enemies are, they have both wealth and stonetalker power. Tallon will likely be a trap for you." He repeats, "Beware."

Tarnished Information

Nuyok accepts the wine, taking a small drink while hearing out the Tarn. "Tarn, thank you for the information and everything else. I would highly suspect you were subject to spirit manipulation, given the forces I suspect are at work. If you plan to pursue us to Tallon, it might be helpful if I knew your typical place of lodging, in case I find out information on the manipulator..." Nuyok trails off, not needing to state the obvious. "By the way, were you given any names of those you dealt with?"

"Until I am certain if what when on, I shall keep names and identities to myself.
"As for where we shall be, we rarely camp in the city. Authorites frown on our security procedures. We will likely camp near the outpost Tallon keeps on the opposite side of the inlet."

"Fair enough, and if I can find out any information, I will endeavor to convey it to you there. Perhaps later we can come to a mutually beneficial relationship. Until then..." and Nuyok heads back out to the party, as the Tarn evidently is desiring to wrap things up.

Nuyok emerges from the Tarn's tent, and says simply "we should take our leave now." Pausing, "and any further insult to the Tarn will likely result in your death, so I advise that we leave quietly." Nuyok then sees to loading up Celeste to rest and otherwise prepares to leave at the earliest opportunity (even though a full day's lead, and not just dawn, was granted by the Tarn, Nuyok is not of the mind to finish out the night here...).
